Queen & Paul Rodgers vs Raspberries

For those of you who were planning on going to both the LA and San Diego shows....you have the opportunity to see Queen/Paul Rodgers instead on Saturday night.

They were in North Jersey last night and their only other US date brings them to LA next Saturday (it's the real reason the SanDiego show was canceled...the boys wanted to see the Queen show wink )

Let me tell you, I was there last night and it was a tremendous show. Brian May is truly the greatest rock and roll guitarist in the world...he was amazing! These guys really pulled it off. The mix of songs, the way Paul Rodgers was used, the sound system, the crowd...I was expecting to be disappointed but honestly came away totally fulfilled!

About halfway through the show, Roger Taylor came out and did "Days of our Lives" and a video montage came on the screen that included Freddie...the fans went nuts! A few songs later, they did Bohemian Rhaspody which was Freddie on video on the piano and Brian and Roger playing in the shadows in the background. It ended with Paul Rodger coming out for the final rocking verse of the song. (My highlight of the evening!)

Here's the funny part...on my way home, as happy as I was, and Queen was my absolute favorite band growing up...I said to myself, if I was going to LA next week and could only choose one concert to see ..... now granted I would see both if I could....but if I were limited to just one of the two shows...

I'D GO SEE THE RASPBERRIES!!!!

Harry,

Kathy and I were there, too! And having seen Queen (with Freddie -- 9 or 10 times since they first came to America in '74), I was also quite impressed with the show. First off, it can't be Queen. Not anymore. But how incredible is it to watch Brian May play guitar? He is a GENIUS -- a one-of-a-kind original player the likes of which they don't make anymore. And Paul Rodgers is singing GREAT! The mix of Queen, Bad Company, and Free sounded good to my ears and the crowd ate it up.

PS: Brian May!!!

Paul Rodgers is such a great singer, one of the very best, Im sure many would agree. But I was surprised when I first heard about this because Paul Rodgers great R+B/rock style doesnt mesh with alot of the Queen material in my mind. I'm glad to hear the concert worked out well and was really enjoyable. Paul's sort of gritty, straightforward and blistering approach seems somewhat counterpoint to Queen stylistically. Queen achieved alot, had alot of great tunes, but I was never a fan of the heavily compressed Brian May guitar solos and also the heavily compressed multi-multi layered vocaling. Some of the tracks have a kinda artificial sound to them, Bohemian Rhaposody always reminded me of a sorta rocked-up ABBA cut. When I saw Queen, years ago, their recording soundwasnt well duplicated in concert but that was prior to live sound technology evolving so much. Now dont tell me Paul Rodgers grew a little mustache, went bear chested, and wore all leather?? I sure hope not.

Bad Company and Free, two great bands.

On Wednesday night, during an appearance on national syndicated radio show "Rockline," Brian May mentioned that this grouping may have life beyond just a tour, and that he, Paul and Roger are planning to enter the studio and work on some new material.

You hear that, Raspberries? Going into the studio to work on new songs! WHAT A GREAT IDEA!

Nothing against Queen, but I'm not surprised that they won this UK award. They've stood on hallowed ground in that country for years, and the fact that "Bohemian Rhapsody" keeps winning their 'best song of all-time' is proof. Paul Rodgers must be wondering where he went wrong with Bad Company.

Mott the Hoople, a great band that was also about songs. Quite popular about the same time as Side 3. An interesting read was Ian Hunter's "Dairy of a Rock n Roll Star" which highlighted Mott's first tour of the United States. Mick Ralph's "I'm a Cadillac/El Camino Dolo Rosa," ,from "Mott," a wonderful pop song and instrumental- and one of my favorites. Mott toured the States in 73 with a not very well known Queen. (No relation to Paul Rodgers/AD HOC Band etc.)Mott the Hoople became a little more glam oriented after Mick Ralphs departure. Mick Ronson was in for awhile before he and Hunter did the solo stints I think. The first BAD COMPANY album was magic. The Mott version of "ready for Love" not so bad either.
