Lawyer fan
I always enjoy listening to songs sung by Carl. I thought he was tremendous live on stage doing either ballads, rockers..etc.. Eric C., Billy Joel, early Elton, McCartney and a few others also have that gift. Overall though, IMO, the early Brian Wilson possibly had the greatest vocal instrument pop has ever known. Sure miss those great vocalists. Enjoy. Marc
Paul Davie
Has anyone ever seen the Beach Boys documentary footage that shows Carl - '76 tour? - singing his part for "Surfer Girl"...by HIMSELF...at a sound check with instruments backing him? OMG! By that time, the part was definitely second nature to him. But holy crap...it was all over the music staff!! The notes were high, then low, and huge intervals in between notes that are hard for us mere mortals to hit. What a "God Only Knows-given" talent. It also gave me the perspective of Brian's genius arranging. I didn't record the documentary, otherwise I would have charted the notes, and try and figure out the others ones. And I agree, Marc...that 'lost' footage of the BB's singing songs like "In My Room" and "Surfin' USA" was great. Hearing Brian's falsettos (without monitors!) gave me chills.
Lawyer fan
Hi Paul. I do recall the footage about Carl that you refer to...I think it was during a sound check or rehearsal. I was fortunate to have met Brian and Carl, separately, years ago. Both nice, very shy, humble. I always was in awe when Carl used to thank the audience "very, very, very ...much for coming to the BB shows". He was one of the few performers who I felt was truly thankful to be allowed to make a living on stage. As it says on his headstone, "the world is a lesser place without him.." Enjoy the music. MAM
Paul,Is that footage from the "Endless Summer" video?
MikeM
By all accounts, Carl was a fine human being above and beyond his considerable musical talents.Alex Chilton of Big Star, who's not exactly known for handing out compliments, has spoken very highly of Carl, saying he taught him a lot about playing guitar during the time The Box Tops toured with The Beach Boys. ira
I know the stuff on www.youtube.com changes from time to time-but go there and search video for different Beach Boy stuff.Just now y'all inspired me to look.I caught "Goin' On"-a top 20 hit on page 2 with a great performance by Carl. This one of the last top 40 Beach Boy songs and I think it's a goodie. It never got overplayed-and remains a lost gem like some Carmen/Raspberry stuff. Sometimes you get lucky.-Ira.
Lawyer fan
For a great Carl / Brian Wilson vocal, the song "Til I Die" ( from the BB's Surfs Up album ) says it all. Carl's ear for harmony was incredible. Enjoy. Marc
raspberrywine
"Till I Die" incredible. Carl's the greatest. Dennis too. Always dug his "Pacific Ocean Blue" l.p.
Lawyer fan
I note the Pet Sounds album cover, raspberrywine.Next month, it will be the 40th anniversary of the release of Pet Sounds. Still, IMO, the greatest pop record ever made. Probably the best there ever will be. Enjoy the weekend. Marc
IluvEric
Check out: http://www.myspace.com/denniscarltour ADAM MARSLAND'S CHAOS BAND (featuring Evie Sands) and ALAN BOYD are bringing their "Songs of Carl and Dennis Wilson" set, which has earned enthusiastic praise from fans and musicians alike (most notably Beach Boy Al Jardine), to the Midwest in May, '06. One night of the tour is May, 21 2006 at Beachland Tavern -maybe some of you will have a chance to see them.
ira
Evie Sands is a great singer who did original versions of songs like "I Can't Let Go" (Hollies") and "Take Me For A Little While" (Vanilla Fudge and others.) Had a crush on her. way back when. Cool news.-Ira.
Lee Marshall
Carl was several cuts above. Brian was too back in his youth [and perhaps up to the early 70s]. Quite enjoy Henry Gross...STILL. Eric's vocals are also something unique/special. As I posted elsewhere...not knowing ANYTHING about what was/is going on with Eric and/or the Raspberries...I always pictured his vocal talent as being one of the VERY few who would have done justice to Freddy Mercury/Queen material.Maybe...just maybe these fellows are 5 of the top 10 PURE vocalists of our time. Jon Anderson also comes to mind.........
raspberrywine
Lawyer Fan Marc I think you're right. It still sounds fresh 40 years later. It is a great example that a pop/rock masterpiece isnt necessarily all sunshine and smiles. ( Oh, wait Smile was 67 wasnt it?) Pet Sounds still has a plaintive yearning in the arrangements that's hard to define. Simultaneously upbeat and sad, I think it's beauty lies in the music conjuring up multiple complex emotions simultaneously. Ofcourse that's useless over-intellectualization. Bottom line; it is one fine musical achievement.
