Have to watch American Idol, for the contestant to sing ALL BY MYSELF",

Does anyone know if you are a contestant on that show, do you still have to have permission to sing that song from the music artist?

I'm not complaining or nothing, I just want to know.

I hope that person who sings the song does a great job.

We'll find out, won't we.

In 1968 my Jr. High graduating class chose "Summertime Blues" by the Who for our class song. I don't think any of us at that time knew that it had been a hit for the Big Bopper a decade earlier. The poor girl doing "ABM" probably wasn't born when Eric released it. Kirk.

Ohmygod, a WD basher south of the Canadien border! An Ohian, no less (is Ohian a word?) eek I can see criticism for the drum machine, but I think there is plenty of 'blood and emotion' running through just the first 2 songs on the cd. I can see how Eric might not want to record again. You put your heart and soul into a record and it gets a 'frigid' rating. Yikes! Kirk.

There is always a lot of passion and emotion in Eric's music, no matter WHAT instrument(s) is (are) playing it. That's just how he writes. That being said, only live instruments can possibly bring out all the harmonies and colors of his music. Although he plays the synth very well, it is so flat (not pitchwise, but almost "non-dimensional") compared to his music played with live instruments. You just can't hear the electric "edge" to all those chord changes and modulations, etc. on a synthesizer.

The music is perfect--the medium screws it up.

I hear plenty of emotion on WD songs like "Top Down Summer" "Walk Away Rene" "...Forever Tonight"(all those "Baaaaby"s!) and "IWBTLY". There are plenty of real acoustic and Wally's electric guitars. Although some songs are just average and the synthetic percussion is mostly weak, and "Almost Paradise" is an unforgivable thin recording of a very good song, and the synth horns on "Cartoon World" and "TDS" are $200 Casio-like,...Hmmmm, I forgot what my point was... frown

...No wait! It may not be E.C.'s best, but still a solid mellow pop CD overall. The Carmen songwriting genius still shines through the sometimes weak synth and percussion sequencing.

It seems the colder the climate, the more people forget the good parts and songs on WD. Canadian Brain Freeze is blowing south? It might be from the growing socialism in your French-like government eek

But what do I know? My whole county is like a nuclear winter right now with wildfire smoke and ash... frown So I might not be thinking straight.

Actually "Summertime Blues" was written amd first recorded by Eddie Cochran. It hit #7 on the Billboard charts back in 1958. Cochran was the great Hall of Fame 50's rocker who died tragically in an auto accident in 1959. The WHO's Live version of "Summertime Blues" peaked at #27 on the charts. The Big Bopper never charted in the Hot 100 with "Summertime Blues". While many "baby boomers" may be remember hearing the Who's version. It's nice to recognized the original writer and performer: Eddie Cochran.

W a i t a minute... I just feel that I, we deserve better !As far as being south of the border I grew up in Cleveland, Lake County, Erics home town. Let me tell you you will not believe how tough it was being a Carmen/Raspberry fan. Some people don't hear Eric/Berries the way we do.I was raped reshaped and had to escape, when openly admitting to the genuis of these guys.

Which is why I expect and hope that when I hear thier new material it not only stands up to

his/thier past standards but exceeds them. Winter Dreams was a producer in Japan with some cash and not Erics best effort. It fell short by anyones expectations. Tony you nailed it with the Casio in Cartoon World. Would, could, should the cd have been better with some real musicians ? I believe we all know that answer. Do I own and still play this cd ..Well a yeah. Hey I'm still a fan but not with out the right to expect better. OK tear me apart!

Today on the Today show they had both All By Myself, and Almost Paradise.

I have nothing against Celine at all, but it sounds weird when they say "..and performing Celine Dion's All By Myself.."

or Ann Wilson's Almost Paradise..

Despite the mention or lack thereof, that check is just as good, right?

I'm sure this is just par for the course for many a great songwriter.

We know where the credit belongs Eric.

Hey Don--Help me out a little with fixing my memory. Maybe it was Eddie Cochran's version I was referring to. I don't have any books to look it up. Who performs "Summertime Blues" in "La Bamba" and then dies in the plane crash with Buddy Holly and Richie Valens? Where's my tape?...Kirk.

Eddie Corcoran was not in the plane with Richie Valens. Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper (JP Richardson) were aboard. Tommy Alsup (noted Nashville guitar player) was also in Buddy's band but did not board that fateful flight "the day the music died."

Eddie died in a car accident a year or so later. Also in that car and injured was Gene Pitney (or was it Gene Vincent?).

I saw Brian Setzer and his Orchestra a few years ago. Fabulous, fabulous show. Not many musicians out there who can play and sing as well as Mr Setzer.
