OK, I finally got both verions. Being a member of this group is great!

Now for my opinion - some of you might not like this - but I LOVE the long version. I like the sound of just the piano and his voice. It makes me feel like I'm watching him in concert - just like a certain video of him. I like the slightly faster tempo.

That being said, I'm not sure if something this long would sell to the mass audience. Long songs tend to be a rarity on the radio - you don't hear Stairway to Heaven every day, now do you. On the other hand, ABM was long, and look how many people love it.

I think this song has the potential to be a bigger hit than ABM. I'm not kidding, or just saying it because I'm an EC fan. If I heard this song on the radio today and didn't know who it was by, I'd be waiting at the end of the song to hear them mention the name of the singer so I could go out and purchase the album.

We're got to get Eric back in the studio to release this song. I can't believe it's sitting around unreleased. The world is missing out on hearding a great piece of music.

Thanks to Greg for sending me the short version. A couple of things that have always bugged me about the song:

1. The cliched lyrics (Dean Pitchford?)

2. Those horrible "Air Supply" drums

A bit of refining and maybe sung in a more mellow manner, and the song could hit the charts for someone.

Hey, I didn't know Eric did record a demo of the long version. I've the short one and knew a verse had been cut thanks to Bernie who put the complete lyrics here a few months ago.

Could anybody send me the long one.

I could send them the short or another rare song.

thanks!

I was about to sit down and listen to the song and write out the lyrics. Does anyone know where the above mentioned lyrics that Bernie put on the site are? It's going to save me a few hours of listening and typing! I did a search on the internet for the lyrics, but didn't see them anywhere. That's why I thought I'd be spending an evening doing it myself. Not that I mind a night of listening to Eric....

Lost Control, I will sing it to you, ok

"Almost Paradise" I'll even include Mrs. Dean Pitchford,

Shhhhh. Don't say anything to Eric, ok

The short song and the long song are good to me.

But, I like the demo version better.

It's so melodic and beautiful, and her voice makes you want to slide right into a delicious tasting Peach, juicy that is.

Lol

That is the first time I have ever heard of the song or even seen the lyrics for that matter.

Wow, I can't think straight after reading the lyrics. Incredible! One of the most moving and powerful lyrics I have ever read. I can't imagine what adding music and vocals would be like. Eric's vocal style would bring my heart pounding out of my body!

You really did it now bernie... I can't get the words out of my head!

MAM ~ What a great story! I would love to hear your version.

I always have to listen to "Devil' in the dark and replay it and replay it. Eric's voice gives me tingles and the whole arrangement, power and passion of the song to me, is absolutely perfect. I wouldn't change a thing. I only have the 4.50 version. I didn't know there was another one! eek

I've heard both versions. I adore the song. In fact, I cry every time I hear it. Eric's melody is just hauntingly beautiful. His music speaks on many levels, and this song is one of the most powerful examples of that. I agree with JuliaAllByMyself--passionate and powerful.

I used to sit around the studio discussing this with my peer group of engineers and musicians. I am convinced that I could produce a successful series of recordings for Eric, because I believe that I do personally understand what the appeal is. Add a C-12 and the rest would be history. For one thing, my opinion, don't use any Neumanns on Eric's vocals. He doesn't need the midrange boost and it sounds annoying. His natural midrange is stellar and the C-12 is the ticket. I sure would like an opportunity to test this theory.

I must say this though - yes, the _song_ itself is beyond excellent. I agree with Eric, but he didn't tell you this part - that song only works if it sounds like the guy singing it actually died immediately after wringing out the last drop of effort expended on singing it. Its not *quite* there.

I will never forget the time that I had a 27 year old man in my arms, crying on my shoulder like a baby, in a studio control room. I had just kicked his ass in a recording session, trying to get that last little 1% which was needed to push his vocal performance over the top, and we were listening to the playback. I got it - but it nearly broke his health being pushed that hard. He took a week off after that session.

Anyone can make a good record - these days there is no excuse. Only great people can make great records and it takes its toll!

Wow, great story Bushman. I think that's what sets apart music like Eric's from stuff like what Britney Spears and co. do. Eric puts his whole heart into the song - as in ABM - whereas Britney just sings along and the engineers are the real artists when it comes to making the music.

I think you've put your finger on why I don't like WD. The lyrics are nice enough, the music ok, but there isn't the pain he had on earlier albums. That's why songs like Boats and ABM are classics and why WD is a cheap E-bay purchase.

One last thought - maybe the reason you don't hear any pain is because Eric didn't write the lyrics - so it has no personal meaning to him. As he was the lyric writer on his early albums, you can hear the personal experience and pain coming through his voice. Although he's not fond of writing lyrics and has lately (as in the last 15 years) passed off the responsibility to others like Dean and Diane, in order to have a really great album again, he needs to put some personal experiences down on paper and onto tape.

Maybe he's just too happy with his personal life to come up with a great album. Great for him, but sad for us!

Just another day at the office Michelle. Good comparison there. Way too many "recording artists" who have no business putting anything down on tape (or whatever), IMHO. I've never heard WD, btw.

One thing is worth mentioning, and that is sometimes the only way to get a passionate song is to sing it dispassionately. Todd Rundgren is famous for taking that to the next level. The stuff which is coming out of his mouth is so unbelievable that it has to be almost disconnected or you'd have to take a break listening to it for being overwhelmed.
