Thanks so much.Eric you looked real nice on the Mike Douglas Show. I remember seeing you that day, I was so excited you were on TV because I never had a chance to see you live. Raspbernie
Eric,I know all of the "Change of Heart" TV appearances featured lip-syncing to the album tracks but I seem to hear some vocal doubling on this Mike Douglas Show performace. Was there an open mike on this one, and were you singing along?Bernie
John Shaft
WOW!I may be the odd one out here but "Change Of Heart" is my favorite EC tune (at least as his solo stuff goes) so to actually see some footage of our hero performing it really made my night! A huge taco-bueno THANK YOU for such a cool clip!Oh, Bernie, in case I never told you before - you freakin' ROCK!

Eric Carmen
During the mixing process, it's not unusual to do different mixes for special situations. We always did an "album mix", then we would do what we called a "TV mix," that would be everything except the lead vocal. That way you could sing live to the pre-recorded track. If the vocal on the song is "doubled" (double tracked) we would use one track, mixed at a lower volume than the lead vocal, so that you could sing live and still get the "doubled" effect. I believe that's probably what was happening on the Mike Douglas show. Mike, by the way, is a terrific guy and a really good singer. I was watching his show one day, years ago, and he sang the most beautiful version of "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" that I've ever heard. My Mom modeled swimsuits on his show back in the 60's when it originated from Cleveland. Then the 'Berries did his show a couple of times when he moved it to Philadelphia. And I was on the show a number of times after he moved to L.A. Mike's daughter married the brother of Cleveland's former mayor and current Senator, George Voinavich. My wife and I met Mike's grandchildren when Clayton went to pre-school with their children. When we moved to Gates Mills from L.A. back in 1994, we got an invitation to a "meet your new neighbors" party at a lovely home in our quaint little town. We thought it would be a cute little shindig with cheese cubes on toothpicks and a couple of sweet,blue-haired ladies serving tea. When we arrived, we found the Gates Mills police directing traffic and the "home" was a fifteen thousand square foot mansion on twenty acres with a half a mile walk from parking to the door. When we entered the home we were directed to the wine bar and as I turned the corner I see.....Mike! I say "What are you doing here?" and he says "What are YOU doing here?" and I tell him we just moved back from L.A. and he says "So did we!" It turns out Mike and his wife bought a home just around the corner from ours so they could be near their grandchildren and great grandchildren. After that, I used to run into Mike and his wife at the local grocery store and various other spots around the East side. He's a genuinely charming man and his grandchildren have become good friends of ours. Mike and I share the same birthday and every year I get a call from his grandson Paul to say "I just talked to Grandpa and he said to wish Eric a happy birthday from me." It's a small world. ec
ira
What a lovely story. His show was a companion to so many of us. To kids like me after school,to my mom who loved the warmth, and the singers, and comics she adored. I'm so sappy I would get misty listening to Mike's-"The Men In My Little Girl's Life".-Ira. MikeC
What stories to read about. Thanks Darlene, and Eric. I just caught up to this thread, so I'll have to listen and see what Bernie has for us.
Raspbernie
I, too, watched LOTS of Mike Douglas growing up. Why? Because it was on after school and my Mom was hooked on the show. Without a doubt, his most famous shows were the ones with John Lennon, but my personal favorites were the shows with Moe Howard of the Three Stooges.Bernie
Bob Allen
Mike Douglas was a genious. I watched his show just to see how he interviewed people (and, of course, to see the Raspberries on one or two occastions!). He made it look so easy (as did Merv Griffin). I always wondered what happened to him - now I know. Thanks Eric.
Brian
I too, have met Mike Douglas. He was here at the TV station about a year ago and I usually don't approach guests while they're here;professional courtesy. But Mike Douglas was an exception!Watching him on TV made me feel as if he was family. He was as gracious as could be...he didn't know me from Adam, but he and his wife spoke with me as if I was their next door neighbor. Great guy...I didn't know that he moved back to Cleveland, however.
Eric Carmen
He has since moved to Florida. I don't think Mike's wife was too fond of the Cleveland winters. ec
Paul Davie
EC - Synchronicity is a wonderful thing, isn't it? I think the man upstairs planned for Mike to be a strong presence in your life, including the 'reunion' in your own neighborhood!OK all you trivia buffs...what was Mike Douglas' first big break in show business? What famous song did he sing in 1939 (+/-) and what movie?
darlene
Thanks for sharing such a great story, Eric! I always say there *are* no accidents! Everything is meant to happen for a reason, even if it's not evident for a long long time. Eventually, "it all comes out in the wash." Who knows what's in the cards for Mike? Even *he* may eventually come back to Cleveland. He may decide he doesn't like those hot Florida summers! --D
