Eric Inspirations?

LOL! I am floored! Thanks for the confirmation, Eric! I guess I have to pat myself on the back for that one...because honestly, this is a piece of "detective work" I did back when I was but a girl of 13...I vaguely remember going to a store, seeing a paperback rack full of books and seeing that one of them was titled "Starting Over." Being a diehard Raspberries fan, I had to pick it up and page through it (although at that age I was a bit young to be reading Wakefield...not that I couldn't have done it but my mother would've had a fit if she thought I was reading a book with SEX in it. Little did she know what kind of music I was listening to!). And I noticed that the titles of other books Wakefield had written (listed in the front) included "Going All The Way." And I just about died! (Of course, I was convinced it must be the reverse--Dan was getting all his ideas for book titles from Eric. LOL.)

Anyway, thanks to Bernie and Eric for helping me confirm this after all these years!

As for the Time magazine cover...I remember reading about that when Eric first said it was the inspiration for "Let's Pretend," and actually going to the library and LOOKING UP that issue in the bound issues in the basement, just so I could see what it looked like! I see you can actually order a framed version of it for $15.95...LOL, maybe we should all pool together and get that for Eric for a birthday present! Oops...surprise spoiled! LOL!

Trindy what a great job! It's great to get verification of things like that. I think it's really cool that Eric reads the posts and is willing to take the time to verify things. Eric, you need to know that we need to know this stuff! I think the way songwriters get their inspirations is very interesting. It's easier to get songs from personal experience but you end up writing about the same things from the same viewpoint. Putting yourself in a different situation to write a song from another perspective is an art in itself. I would like to know more about more songs that you or, maybe the other guys have written.

A few days back, Bill C wrote regarding Desperate Fools: "The song has an Eagles/Henley feel to it, and I've read that Eric is a Don Henley fan..."

I for one have long believed had the band stayed intact after Side 3 they might have been The Eagles... with the blend of Eric's rock and Dave's country-style; and Wally's ability to do incredible work in both genre's... That's to take nothing away from Glenn, Don and the boys, but had "Should I Wait" been presented to the world at large on a 45 rpm, the 'Berries might have even become "crossover" stars and there is little doubt that Dave was only getting better as a singer and songwriter...

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread, just adding my 2 cents.

I get what you're saying, I think the Raspberries would have been more like the Hotel California" Eagles rather than the earlier version. Raspberries definitely had more grit in their instrumentation. I think we would've had to see more collaboration. Side three was great, but distinct styles were evident because of no co-writes. Look at the Eagles writing credits. Sometimes there were 4 contributors.

Maybe Tony, or maybe Eric was steered in that direction by Mr. Davis after the success of All By Myself. Let's see starting with side three...Eric Ballads? No. Staring Over? The title track. Eric's Debut...All By Myself & Everything. Even "Everything" was not a romantic ballad. After that the Ballads just poured out. I'm not saying...I'm just saying. It's hard to say. It would've been interesting if he could've been both a solo artist and with the 'berries at the same time.

Thanks Tony and Bernie. It's great to know that Eric reads the board. When he verified Trindy's post...that's a thrill for not only Trindy, but everyone else who paticipates. Thanks Eric! Thanks for creating this High Class site Bernie. It makes the internet a great place to be.

Eric also has a great memory. He's been known to mention things people have posted when he meets them! He's always gracious, but I can tell you it can really take one aback when it's so unexpected.

Eric is very interested in everyone he meets--that's one of the things that makes him so interesting!

I agree Tony, that Eric might have recorded some on his own. If I recall something I read a long time back, he had written ABM while writing for the last Berry album, so maybe he had inklings of doing that too... I don't think it would have been the first time a member of a band did some solo work as well?

More likeley, I believe, it would have been a cut on the next Raspberries album. Is it so different in concept that "I Can Remember" or "I Reach For The Light" (Not "WE Can" or WE Reach...") And can you imagine some of Eric's later compositions performed by the band? Especially the stuff from "Tonight You're Mine!"

I also agree with Bill that way by Clive. And Eric gave him the next big hit, but he didn't know what to do with it! Jeeze... release it right before Christmas... try to get radio stations to replace one version of it for another... stop promotion... That song and that album could have been something that people talk about with respect and awe... like Hotel California or Dark Side of the Moon... and Arista royally screwed it up! You could find LP's and Casettes in cutout bins for well over a decade... probably still can find some tapes on dusty truck-stop racks...

I remember reading (I believe it was in Tonight!) that Eric said when with the Raspberries all the label was looking for was "Son of Go All The Way" and when solo all they were looking for was "Son of All By Myself". What I can't understand is what ever happened to versatility? I seems that you would have a much greater artist, not to mention a greater amount of money coming in, by an artist who could show different sides of himself than one of whom every song sounds the same and loses its depth. How quickly would the population lose interest in that as opposed to someone who you never knew what to expect from? I guess that's one of the reasons I DO like Eric's albums so much as opposed to those who say they sound incongruous or fragmented --- things don't sound the same and offer a lot of variety and style.

I think in the "If Eric and Todd" thread the article states how people tend to like similarities in their music. The point of that particular service is, in essence, to find "Son of... (Whatever it is you like...) which isn't so far off of what Capitol and Arista were doing.

Maybe Raspberries and Eric fans are just better adjusted and more versatile than fans of other artists???
