Bill C
Since there's been talk about "Eric Carmen song influences" on other threads. Has anyone ever noticed Eric's use of Movie Titles that were out at about the same time Eric was writing songs with the same title. Namely Marathon Man (1976) & Heaven Can Wait (1978)? Has this ever been brought up before?
darlene
Very astute observation, Bill C! I noticed that both songs reflected current movies, but never thought to bring it up in a thread. One of the things that always struck me about Eric is that he has a keen interest in the world at large (driven by his intellect, no doubt) and can converse very intelligently on virtually any subject in the universe. That makes him one of the most interesting people I know. Now, I'll have to look and see if any other song titles reflect movies, or other events current at the time of their composition. --Darlene
SugarBabi7
Didn't Eric write Heaven Can Wait for the movie per Warren Beatty's request, but then was never used?He also wrote for Disney's Natty Gann I think with Pitchford.
Julie
I want to say that both songs were written with those movies in mind but the movie folks went another route. Too bad. I adore, "Heaven Can Wait" and I really can get into the live version of "Marathon Man". It really rocks!--Julie
darlene
Eric wrote Wild Wild Heart for Natty Gann. It should have been used. I didn't realize "Heaven Can Wait" was written for the movie. This is a great thread! --Darlene
Raspbernie
You guys need to re-read MARATHON MAN!Bernie
Bill C
Sorry Bernie, I know we should know all this stuff....I feel bad 'cause I haven't bought my copy yet...see my order at the EC store.
pierson
You guys need to re-read MARATHON MAN!Bernie my thought exactly... also check Eric's thoughts on F Scott Fitzgerald...
Tiggsherby
I listen to alot of Eric songs and can't help but think that if "not" written for a movie or a soundtrack, they should have been or could have been used in a movie.
Bill C
I listen to some songs and I try to to find the influence. Being a wanna be songwriter myself, I find that usually I have been influenced without even knowing it. Like Eric's Desperate Fools. It may be a stretch, but I think Eric was trying to do his version of Desperado. The song has an Eagles/Henley feel to it, and I've read that Eric is a Don Henley fan, so it follows. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing! Everyone does it to some extent. I think Eric is more scrutinized because of Raspberries and their obvious influences. Tony Cartmill
I have always believed that songs like "Desperate Fools" "I'm Through With Love" "Top Down Summer" "The Way We Used To Be" "It Hurts Too Much"... will be exposed to some future obscure and/or famous film directors and they will include those classic songs in their movie sountracks, and if one becomes a blockbuster like Dirty Dancing...A great old song will finally get it's due...And Eric puts another wing on his mansion. ira
I still can't believe that"The Way We Used To Be" has not become a standard ala "All By Myself".Forgive my repetitive rant-but-this song is as good as any song ever written about the complexity of relationships and the human condition. Tony Cartmill
Rant away Ira. You and Marvin remind us what a forgotten gem that song is.
darlene
That it is, Ira. And you can "rant" all you want to! --D
Travis
Wasn't "Hey Deanie" written for one of the Dean Martin / Matt Helm movies?
ira
I THINK HE LOVED THE NAME FROM A NATALIE WOOD ROLE. (RE-MARATHON MAN).WAS THE MOVIE SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS?
Ecstasy
When you really get down to it, everyone is influenced by someone else. Berries were influenced by Beatles, Beatles were influenced by Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, and Elvis. They were influenced by earlier R&B and gospel. As the Biblical saying goes, "There is no new thing under the sun." We just find new ways of making it interesting!
darlene
Very well said, Ecstacy! Yes, Ira, it was Splendor in the Grass. --Darlene
Bill C
This could be a stretch too, but...I was watching "Caddyshack" the other day and as Chevy Chase was doing his massage scene with Judge Smails daughter he was singing an impromptu song to her....I was born to love you, I was born to suck your face. .....Just keeping the thread alive. Trindy
OK, here's something I bet the rest of you do not know, and I bet even Eric will 'fess up to it.Eric has acknowledged that he was inspired to write a song titled "Going All the Way" by a novel by Dan Wakefield titled "Going All the Way." Well, Dan Wakefield wrote some other novels as well, and you know what one of them was called?"Starting Over."I kid you not.I remember figuring out this coincidence back when I was a kid (no, I did NOT read the books, I was just aware of their existence) and wondering whether there was some sort of connection. Now that Eric's fessed up to one half of my suspicions, well...what about the other?
Trindy
Er, I meant the SONG was titled "Go All the Way" of course...no, I haven't lost it yet...just tired...
Bill C
That is very coincidental...wonder if Eric reads all his books?
Raspbernie
Trindy,Never heard that one before. I assume it's just a coincidence as I believe the title STARTING OVER was an editorial comment on the band's new line-up.Here's something new that I dug up on this subject. Eric has long admitted that he was inspired to write "Let's Pretend" from a TIME magazine cover whose subject was a story on teenage sex. I managed to dig up a cover scan that you can all see HERE , which places the writing of "Let's Pretend" to the middle of August 1972!Bernie
Raspbernie
Eric weighs in:- - - -Hi Bernie, That is indeed the picture that I was looking at while writing "Let's Pretend" and "I Wanna Be With You" for the Fresh album. I can't believe you actually found it. Amazing! I thought that photo captured the essence of what I was trying to do musically. By the way, Trindy is right about the title for Starting Over. I did see Dan Wakefield's book and I thought it would make another great song title.Eric
aggiesjc
Wow, that's amazingly observant of you, Trindy. Now it's confirmed by Eric himself. Very cool!
