John P
At tonight's game at Shea Stadium what do I hear coming out of the loud speaker 15 minutes before the start of the game? "Cruisin Music" by The Raspberries! I fell over and couldn't believe it. Hearing a Berry song played at Shea is the last thing I would expect. Maybe in Jacobs Field you would. Glad that someone in the Mets organization has a ear for The Raspberries. John
Billy
I'm going to today's Mets game, I'll be listening -- there must be a Raspberrie's fan at Shea directing the music -- last time I was there they played I Wanna Be With You !
marvin
"Cruisin' Music" and not "GAtW"??? That is totally against the norm. Someone in the Mets organization obviously knows the 'berries.Marv
Gene
The Raspberries finally play Shea Stadium!

Eric Carmen
You'd have a better chance of hearing us at Shea Stadium than you would at Jacob's Field. New York and New Jersey totally "get" the 'Berries. I'm not sure Cleveland ever really understood what we were trying to do. Unfortunately.ec
Lee Marshall
Well I played a salute to summer [07] set the other day which included Cruisin Music. Maybe someone down there gets THAT aspect to the song.Yeahhhhh summer.
hollies65
Eric...The people who run Jacobs Field may not get the Raspberries...but there is a legion of Raspberries fans here...I'm speaking mostly of musicians and people who worked in music around town...but trust me there are alot of rabid longtime fans here. Eric Carmen
hollies 65, I'm not disparaging Cleveland. They were just more into what they were fed by FM radio ( Bowie, Mott The Hoople, Roxy Music) than they were the Berries. It's not really their fault. They were never given the chance. I'm just always thrilled that Jersey and New York DID get us. It was really quite and eye opener, going from Cleveland (our home town) to New York ( "if I can....make it there......etc." ) It was like going from being Herman's Hermits to being the Beatles in the space of a week. It just saddens us that our hometown didn't really get it. On the other hand, it thrills us that New York and Jersey DID! e
marvin
Eric intersting point about Cleveland and Mott/Bowie/Roxy, etc. Ian Hunter in his interview on Craig Ferguson's show a couple of weeks ago said that he wrote "Cleveland Rocks" because it was the first city that Mott, Bowie and Roxy sold-out.Marvp.s. North of the border, WE got IT also!
hollies65
I guess it's just weird for me to think Cleveland didn't dig the Raspberries because everyone I knew loved em...but then almost all of my friends loved and played pop-power-pop. Yep it was Mott-Roxy-Bowie-etc all the time in the 70s...and I liked all those bands...BUT we LOVED the Raspberries. When the guys at WMMS or WNCX or whatever station played someone..they PLAYED em...ALL THE TIME!So yeah...radio in Cleveland...specifically FM radio did not play the Berries....Bastards! But hey...we had the records.
HT from Mo
Hmmm... I wonder how many other places around this great country of ours "got" the Berries besides NY and NJ?Any midwest states south of Cleveland? Say.... Missouri, Kansas, etc?HT
Brian Michael Page
Eric,How did it go in Providence? I saw you then, but I was only eight ('twas 1973). Had the worst seats (thank my parents for that) but loved the music.BMP
seattlesteve
I got it as did my 3 brothers. I wonder if the difference is the local people dismiss bands because they've seen them for years at the local bars and high schools, while a kid from Seattle has his introduction over a AM radio in his 65 Mustang driving to high school, and thinks its pretty cool against the back drop of the influences. "Got it" day one. Raspberries were my favorite bands combined, with a better voice, rolled up in one.S
marvin
Growing up in Montreal in the 1970's, our FM radio force-fed us every 'progressive' rock band that existed. We got a daily dose of Gentle Giant, Strawbs, Supertramp, Styx, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, and solo artists such as Chris DeBurgh, Al Stewart, etc. I'm not sure why this was the case other than the possibility of appealing to the personal tastes of some program director. In any case 30 years later, those band still sell-out in Mtl and their popularity has never waned.I am certain that Andy and I were the only two people in our town who knew of the Raspberries.Marv
Billy
Just to let you guys know, Crusin Music was playedat Shea yesterday morning during the Mets - A's warm ups -- was playing at about 11:40 and sounded loud and great. Sunshine, ice cold brew and Raspberries music playing at Shea -- I couldn't ask for much more. Life is Good.
JCraft
The town I lived in (Thomasville, Ga.) didn't have a decent FM station. We did have certain DJ's who apparently programmed enough of their own music to get some of the progressive stuff. I remember one of them calling the 'berries an "almost FM group" with a Beatles sound---I've been a fan ever since.JIM
Don_Krider
Out of curiousity, when they play the song, do they ever identify the artist?
John P
Wow "Cruisin Music" played at Shea for 2 straight days with over 50,000 people in the stands! John
austinberries
this is so cool - i love it when the music directors at venues like this are well-versed like this; similarly, in Lowes hardware store yesterday i head an EC song - just to show you that Eric & the Raspberries have had a very far reach.. Billy
They didn't announce the artists that are playing at Shea, but I told the guy and his daughter I was with about the Raspberries and he is going to order Starting Over because of the song. My daughter told them "I hear this song at home alot"!
LC
It was like going from being Herman's Hermits to being the Beatles in the space of a week. It just saddens us that our hometown didn't really get it. On the other hand, it thrills us that New York and Jersey DID! e Eric, I get what you're saying, but... it took around three seconds into the first cut on the first Raspberries album for ya'll to surpass Herman's Hermits in every aspect of writing, performance, and recording. No disrespect to the 'mits, either. But again, I get what you're saying: If NYC and NJ soaked in those 'berries albums and understood the inspiration and conviction, then Cleveland's radio stations and rock press should have been gotten it tenfold. It's your own back yard!PS: Thanks for this thread, John P. I love the fact that "Cruisin' Music" is getting blasted out over the Shea sound system.... "Those suntanned girls are lookin' outasight...!"PPS: A bit of lyric confusion: When I first heard the song decades ago, I thought "cutoffs" (as in "throw some cutoffs on...") was "denims" --- which wouldn't make sense, of course, unless the denims were cutoffs.... Of course, who calls jeans "denims"...? Oh, never mind....) :-)
Robin23
I can tell you about Missouri ....being out there for 15 yrs (1983-1998) All they care about is Country Music...at least that is how it was in Springfield, MO. I finally escaped. Back to the East Coast..Virginia. I have discussed the "Berries" with several co-workers, who enjoy the tunes.Robin
