Raspbernie
JOSEPH WILLIAMS REPRISES BALLADS ROLEFormer Toto vocalist Joseph Williams has recorded a sequel to his Japanese-only ballads release of last year. Titled Tears, the new release mirrors the last release in that it is all covers. A few of the tracks featured on this release include covers of Procal Harem's "A Whiter Shade of Pale," Eric Carmen's "All By Myself," and James Taylor's "Don't Let Me Be Lonely." The CD is released in Japan November 21. JOSEPH WILLIAMS PS: Did you know that besides being a member of the prog/rock/pop band Toto, Joseph is the son of famous composer John Williams? marvin
I used to be a major fan of Toto, followed them through all their lead vocalist changes. I believe that Joseph was their 2nd lead singer after original singer Bobby Kimball left the band (Bobby's back now, by the way). In any case, Joseph has a great voice and I'm sure he'll do justice to the songs on this record.
Tim From Wisconsin
That's pretty cool, and I wouldn't have made the connection with John Williams! Count me in as a Toto fan - I saw them twice last year, and they still sound fantastic! A lot of people like to discount them pretty fast, but the musicianship was always there - Just take a look at the liner notes from some of your favorite albums (Including Eric's solo efforts) and you will find members of Toto represented.Tim
Raspbernie
Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro, for starters.
marvin
Steve Lukather and the Porcaro brothers (Mike, Steve and Jeff), along with David Paich and Joseph Williams, all came out of the same high school in L.A. The pedigree in this band is incredible. David's dad, Marty Paich, is a renowned orchestra leader, and everyone knows about Joseph's dad John Williams.Jeff Porcaro, in my mind, still remains among the greatest drummers ever. Prior to Toto, as a teenager he was playing with Sonny & Cher, and then with Steely Dan.
Danny S.
Steve Lukather was here in Cleveland last Friday Nite.I should have gone to see him......
MJ
I really wish people would pick something other than ABM all the time - it is my least favorite song... and he has quite a catalog of songs to choose from!
Tony Cartmill
It wouldn't be your least favorite song if it wasn't played so much. Too much of a good thing, you know...
Kirk
It wouldn't be your least favorite song if Wally sang it (picture that)!
Paulie Mississippi
I've often wondered just why singers don't use more of Eric's library... don't they realize that with a hit like ABM, both with EC and then Celine having stamped it with greatness that they will be harder pressed to "make it their own" than they would be with BOAC... or any of a number of ballads OR rockers that Eric has penned? Matthew C. Clark
Rock critic Dave Marsh didn't give a s--t about Toto. their first 3 albums are * star out of ***** stars. What was he thinkin'. Matt
Craig Benfer
All By Myeslf ranks right up there as my favorite EC song, but I agree that artists need to start branching out to the great songs that aren't so well known.
Tony Cartmill
One night on "American Idol" with about 6-7 finalists left singing Eric's most powerful vocal compositions, and EC's world would turn upside down!"Wow, where can I get a hold of that tune?..." Bob Allen
Toto. Great musicians to be sure. Music as sterile as my granny's kitchen floor. Elevator music with a beat.
marvin
Well at least it's got a beat.
Bob Allen
A beat with zero soul.
Poor4Life
Toto recently disbanded according to their official website. Lukather just didnt have his heart in it anymore. marvin
Well that's too bad, but I'm sure Bob will be thrilled.
AnniekNY
Bob, what do you think about "Africa"? I love that because it's so beautifully layered.but you feel free to be honest!!!
hollies65
I agree with Mr Allen.
Tony Cartmill
If BEA ARTHUR would have joined TOTO as frontman, err...frontwoman, err...lead singer, why, Bob Allen would think the band was loaded with talent and soul...and even more testosterone! :p
Bob Allen
...maybe so...maybe no.ps: 'africa' is a fine tune. just really bland.
Paul Davie
I agree with Bob, too. All the members of Toto are virutosos, and highly sought after recording pro's...on top of their own solo projects. But the put them all together and the songs sound like perfect fodder for a doctor's office. GMan
I agree too. Lots of times, great musicians do not always make great music.
marvin
Well I loved them back then, and I still LIKE them a lot today. I do miss Jeff Porcaro a lot.
