Bessieboo
Do you think the changing of the sequence of the songs was a deliberate effort to lose the anthology idea, sort of "dumbing-down" of the erudition feeling?
LostControl
Marvin, I can't believe you don't like Temporary Hero. I love that song. Eric has said that it never really was finished.
marvin
Michele what can I say? There are actually some of Eric's songs that I don't like. I could say the same for every artist that I like.Marv
Raspbernie
"A Temporary Hero" is a magnificent unfinished song!Bernie
Kirk
Actually, I don't think it was so much unfinished as Eric couldn't find the magical 'take' in the pile of tapes for 'Boats'. Kirk.
Kirk
Bernie, is the audio file up? I can't seem to find it on the Boats Blog main page. Kirk.
Raspbernie
Well, I wasn't sure what word to use. Unreleased infers that it's completely mixed but not released. I chose to say unfished because even though the song was completely written, there never was a final mix or anything close to one since eric couldn't find the "magic take."As for the audio file, I tried uploading earier but for some reason it hasn't shown up. I'll need to look into that later tonight.Bernie
Eric Carmen
I could not find the tape containing the basic track (piano, bass and drums) when I took over as producer. I listened to all 46 reels of tape, but it wasn't there. That's why it wasn't on the album. I just didn't have time to go back and start from scratch, so the original nine songs (and additional six minutes, or so) became eight songs. I think I had originally planned to sequence it on side two, somewhere. I'll see if I can find my notes on it and let you know.ec
LC
Eric,If it helps, this is what you told us on that "Desperate Fools" thread earlier this year: "My original sequence was:Run AwayI Think I Found MyselfShe Did ItLove Is All That MattersTake It Or Leave ItNowhere To HideA Temporary HeroMarathon ManBoats Against The CurrentIt tracked my life from 1967 (the year I graduated from high school) through 1977. Fortunately, I'm a bit more optimitsic now."
Bessieboo
I still like "Love Is All That Matters" as the last song.I realize it is not the powerful ending BATC or "Run Away" is, but it so beautiful. It ends the journey nicely. To me it is a Happily-ever-after-song, I like happy endings in books and movies too.
mymooladi
I love Temporary Hero!!! It's too bad it wasn't on Boats, that would have been awesome, but Boats is awesome just the way it is. Run Away would have been a very interesting song had it been placed first. I can see why you would have wanted it that way, Eric. Congratulations, on your 30th Anniversary of Boats Against The Current. My Number 1 Album.I hope some day to see Temporary Hero recorded and released, that and about 8 other songs like Cindy in the wind etc...June
Kirk
Remembering that there was a 'take' you liked well enough to produce and not being able to find it after listening to 46 reels of tape- beyond disappointing After all that, you still could have had a 9th song for the album, though: "Temporary Insanity" Hopefully, it's out there, somewhere. Kirk.

Raspbernie
Yeah, Don. For a very low quality tape recording of a home demo Eric made in his Cleveland apartment in '76, this one features a passionate vocal with some incredible piano playing. Everyone should check it out!Bernie

mymooladi
Sooo Nice...I have always wanted to hear this song (my favorite song) done with just Eric and the Piano. Oh how beautiful Eric, I love it so much, I new I would. I always new just you and a piano would be awesome. I love this song, not sure why except it just so beautiful and pulls at my heart. What a beautiful present. Thanks Don for sharing.June

Kirk
At the moment, the 'Boats Blog' may be over-shadowed a bit by the monumental "Live On Sunset Strip" release; not overlooked in all of this is just how cool it is to have a peek inside that folder! Gotta love the inside look into the songwriting process that produced this masterpiece. Looking forward to more Kirk.
Don_Krider
Bernie,Seeing those hand-written Eric Carmen lyrics on the blog at http://www.ericcarmen.blogspot.com for the first and second verses of "Boats Against The Current," with the original lyrics and then the lyric changes, has been fascinating. I'm curious to see what else you and Eric post for the first time there.Don Krider http://www.epinions.com/content_393207123588

Raspbernie
I just added Eric's handwritten lyrics to the chorus of "Boats Against the Current" on the BOATS BLOG along with my interpretation of same.
