darlene
I like different songs for different reasons. "My Heart Stops" is adorable for what it is. It's obviously not "Boats," but it's happy and up and puts me in a good mood. The REAL reason I like it? (Duh...)Eric sings it.As a very astute someone wrote on the board long ago, I would be happy hearing Eric read the telephone book. --Darlene
HT from Mo
True Darlene. I enjoy the song very much and it's catchy. If everyone agrees about everything then life would be boring and uninteresting.Julie,Sorry that your thread, how it turned out, isn't what you expected it to be. HT - BTW, Thanks for the song! Raspbernie
Umm. I like "My Heart Stops." It's a gazillion times better than "Reason To Try!"Bernie

Lew Bundles
Sorry...But I dont believe that this board should be a "Barbie and Ken" existence...The song, in my opinion, stinks and I dont consider it Eric's music...Its just him singing it... Paulie Mississippi
...or "Spotlight." (Personally, I thought 'MHS' was a great little number) Bob, you might be making a case for being the anti-pauliemississippi. Spotlight had enough "umph" to it to have been a single. It's fate as the "B" side of "I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips" was tragic; two songs of quality from the Geffen album, Spotlight and "American as Apple Pie" are songs that deserved public attention and airplay more than either of the singles that got released off of that album.IMHO.
Paulie Mississippi
HEY!!!!! YOU GUYS ARE TICKING ME OFF!!!!!THIS WAS A HAPPY-FEEL-GOOD THREAD THAT I STARTED AND I DO NOT APPRECIATE IT BEING TURNED INTO A BASHING ERIC'S MUSIC CONTEST!!!!KNOCK IT OFF!!!!JULIE Julie, I'm sorry you feel your thread was hijacked; but I've come to believe that Eric really values all of our opinions and doesn't expect us to all just kiss his arse and throw praises at every note he played or lyric he sang. I confess that when I saw the single for "My Heart Stops" in the local "Camelot Music" back when it first came out, my heart leapt! A new single! WOW! Could a new album be far behind?Well, the song was sappy... and not in the classic Eric sappy way he does sappy if you know what I mean... and it got ZERO airplay because it was not the right song for the right singer at the right time. In fact I will say that had the first thing I heard from Eric Carmen been "My Heart Stops" it would have been a long time, if ever, that I listened to a second thing from Eric Carmen. But again, I know that some people love the song. And Dianne certainly redemmed herself with her contribution to the Winter Dreams effort. I just hope Julie can forgive me my personal opinion or the fact that I can't just say I loved it when I didn't... and I disagree with the notion that you should remain quiet if you can't say something nice. That's true when you're dealing with personal issues, but when we're offering critiques on the product that Eric offers us... if I don't like such songs and let all you who do have the floor, I'm likely to be stuck with more songs like "My Heart Stops." Billy
I'm not here to pee in the punch -- just weighing in with an opinion -- heck, Bernie doesn't like Reason To Try -- maybe someone out there thinks it's great -- I thought that this board was about sharing thoughts in a professional, constructive way to make for lively conversation. Everyone can't agree all the time --- this is a "bashing Eric's musio contest", just a few different opinions.
Billy
Excuse my error -- typo in the last sentence above -- I should be saying "this ISN'T a bashing Eric's music contest" -- just a few different opinions. Sorry about that -- couldn't find the edit key!
HT from Mo
I like Reason To Try. There are a few of Eric's songs that aren't my favorites but I listen to them on occasion - depends on my mood. Just like Billy said that they are "Opinions" that's all they are.HT
Paulie Mississippi
I should hope it's not a Bash Eric's Music Contest... most, if not all of us, are here because we are huge fans of his. That said, I personally find it easier to believe peoples praise of me when I know that if I do something that is not up to snuff they will not just say "It's great." and go on... In other words, when we tell Eric that "Boats Against The Current" is one of the best songs ever written or that "Tonight You're Mine" was a Rock gem that went unmined he can believe that it is our pure and honest opinion because we are also honest enough to say "My Heart Stops" is a less than stellar (by his standards) piece of music. Now if it was released by one of the many AI contestants, it might be a hit... but it just didn't seem right for Eric.I hope nobody thinks I'm just picking on that song, and though I speak of honesty in our reviews and statements, I hope that nobody thinks I'm accusing them of being less than genuine. In other words, "I yam what I yam." Kirk
I can see how Julie might feel. You post something that is upbeat, but by the time everybody checks in, the thread has a less positive vibe just because of different musical tastes. And you're kind of left feeling like, "What have I done? Just wanted to have a feel-good post, and now Eric is getting bashed!" Or something like that. Kirk.

It's one of Eric's best and "It Hurts Too Much" should have been a huge hit. I always thought of it as Eric's homage to Joel's great "Say Goodbye To Hollywood." "My Heart Stops," was a good little song. And I do emphasize the word "little." But it was as insult to make Eric record it. Like he'd lost his songwriting chops or something. Please... He sang the vocals for several Diane Warren charts of which this is just one of them! I love this recording - and I think it should have gotten way more airplay than it did back in the day when it was first released (1991)?! Rhonda B
I had never heard My Heart Stops until I joined this site in 2021. I was just so pleased to hear what I considered a new song by Eric Carmen and I wasn't sure why people disliked it. I always give a song a chance and listen to it quite a few times. Production wise, I think it could have been stronger with Eric's input but hey, Eric is singing it, so that's the greatest part. Loved the bump Helen.
Doreen
Yeah!!!! Same here!!!! EC could sing the phone book (as we used to say?!) and make it be worth my time to listen! I've always said he could recite the alphabet as long as he's at the piano and I would be in heaven! 1
