Julie
So, today I was spending a lazy Saturday hitting the consignment shops....I walked into our little Goodwill Store in Spencer and for some reason found myself looking at the cassette tapes. (I honestly don't know if I even have a working tape player! Lol!) They didn't have many--40 at best on a little rack on the wall. There, on the top, in the middle was, "My Heart Stops", the single with "It Hurts Too Much" on the flip. Naturally I bought it. I already have a worn copy that I bought in Omaha when it first came out. It was just so odd to find it in little Spencer, Iowa. Just goes to show you, you never know where a little gem may pop up and make your day! Julie
marvin
Julie you should have asked the store owners to blast "It Hurts Too Much" over the sound system. Make more people aware of one of the greatest little pop masterpieces ever written.Marv

Julie
It's "My Heart Stops"--a cute little number that Eric did. I'm pretty sure that Bernie had it up at some point.Ya Marv, I shoulda had them do that! I don't know that they have speakers though! I love "My Heart Stops". I think of my darling husband whenever I hear it, cause that song is just how I feel!Julie
marvin
"My Heart Stops" was a single that eventually became relegated to the flip side of "It Hurts..." In my opinion, it's not in the same league as "It Hurts..."Marv
Don_Krider
Marv,Actually, "My Heart Stops" (written by Diane Warren --- http://www.dianewarren.com ) was released as an A-side cassette-single (07822-12264-4) in 1992 by Arista. For some reason, they pulled that 1980 track "It Hurts Too Much" and stuck it on as the B-side when Arista put it out. I bought two copies of the cassette-single at Camelot Music when it came out in 1992 --- I was hoping it would click on the charts, but no such luck."It Hurts Too Much" was originally released as an A-side 45 rpm vinyl single in 1980 (Arista 0506) with "You Need Some Lovin'" as the B-side. "It Hurts Too Much" was the highest charting debut single in Billboard magazine the week of July 12, 1980 entering the charts at #75 and spending two weeks on the charts before sliding off. I really love that song.Don Krider http://www.epinions.com/content_124870692484 ...who thinks Raspberries could do a killer version of "The Inside Story"... marvin
Don I have "Hurts" on 45 with "Lovin'" on the 'B' side, and I have "My Heart" on cassette single with "Hurts" on the 'B' side. Confused? Don_Krider
Hey, Marv, hope I didn't offend you with my post -- I just don't feel that "My Heart Stops" was ever "relegated to the flip side of 'It Hurts...'" like you posted.I did like the purple finger-print designs on the cassette-single box of "My Heart Stops" (might as well toss in that it was a Guy Roche and Eric Carmen production for those who haven't heard it).Don ...who also likes the cardboard box for the 1990 Capitol Records cassette-single (0-7777-44393-4-3) "Go All The Way"/"I Wanna Be With You" with the Capitol Tower building on the front and no photos of the band...
marvin
No offense taken, and you brought back memories when you mentioned the "purple finger-print.."!Marv
darlene
When I first heard "My Heart Stops," it put me in such a good mood and was so catchy that I was up at 2 AM one night dancing around my music room and Herman (who had been sleeping) came out with his eyes closed and asked if I knew what time it was. I told him to put in his earplugs (that he uses when I'm up late practicing) and go to sleep because I had to hear the song at least one more time. Actually, I played it several more times. GREAT little song! --Darlene
HT from Mo
Oh man! I would love to find a copy of that. I too thought I owned everything that Eric has done.HT
Don_Krider
HT,"My Heart Stops" has made it onto one CD that I'm aware of, Eric Carmen's "Best Selection" released in Japan in 1996 (BMG BVCA-2611) (*not* to be confused with "The Best Of Eric Carmen").I think "Best Selection" is out-of-print now (Amazon.Com says "unavailable"), but perhaps some online retailer has it available still (it shows up on Ebay every once in a while, too). "Best Selection" also includes Eric's last U. S. Billboard chart single, "Reason To Try" from 1988 (which peaked at #87 and features Mark Hudson of The Hudson Brothers on backing vocals). And good ol' Bernie has the lyrics to "My Heart Stops" here: http://www.ericcarmen.com/music/lyrics11.htm#11 Don Krider http://www.epinions.com/content_349631581828
Billy
My Heart Stops is listed on the Tonight You're Mine CD that has just been reissued in Japan. I know you guys like the song but it's my least favorite EC song, no way it belongs with the songs from Tonight You're Mine. Maybe on Change of Heart but not there. Just my opinion.
marvin
Billy you're right: "MHS" doesn't belong on the "TYM" album. It's a total misfit for that album.Marv
Brian Mac
Arista purposely buried the Tonight You're Mine album and I will never understand why. It's one of Eric's best and "It Hurts Too Much" should have been a huge hit. I always thought of it as Eric's homage to Joel's great "Say Goodbye To Hollywood.""My Heart Stops," was a good little song. And I do emphasize the word "little." But it was as insult to make Eric record it. Like he'd lost his songwriting chops or something. Please...

Paulie Mississippi
As I recall "My Heart Stops" it was one of my least favorite Eric songs ever. I was aghast when Arista chose to release it; I think it was just another proof that Clive was hell-bent on making Eric into something he's not. Coming off of "Make Me Lose Control" he should have had a new contract and new album. I do know that there were legal issues but still, Arista had this "Reason to Try" silly song for the olymipic album and then they forced him another insipid tune instead of letting him do what he does best; his own work..."It Hurts Too Much" was one of the best songs Eric ever wrote and recorded; and as a single backed with "You Need Some Lovin'" it could have signalled a huge "rock era" for him... had there been any promotion... But Arista didn't want a rocker, they wanted a "crooner"... another Barely Mannenough... and that was a tragedy...
Billy
Well said Paulie, I couldn't agree more. I hear you Lew and Marv....

marvin
Julie I don't think anyone was trying to ruin your thread. People have different opinions about Eric's music, and "My Heart Stops" is one of those songs that will divide the public. Nothing wrong with having a different opinion, and I don't think everyone here loves everything released by Eric, right?Marv
