Daryl Hall has been granted a temporary restraining order against John Oates after filing a mysterious lawsuit against his Hall & Oates bandmate.

Hall and his trust, The Daryl Hall Revocable Trust, filed a sealed complaint against Oates and two co-trustees of The John W. Oates TISA Trust on Nov. 16 in the Nashville Chancery Court, PEOPLE can confirm.

On the same day, Hall's legal team filed a motion for a temporary restraining order against Oates, which was granted on Nov. 17 after a $50,000 restraining bond was obtained.

Summons were then issued to Oates as well as his co-trustees Aimee Oates and Richard Flynn on Monday, and a pro hac vice motion was filed on Wednesday, meaning one party has requested an out-of-state attorney to join the case.

Reps for Hall and Oates as well as a lawyer for Hall did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

While the bandmates have taken hiatuses from Hall & Oates in the past, they most recently performed as a duo for several concerts throughout 2022.

John Oates Recorded New Version of Hall & Oates Hit 'Maneater' — but Has No Idea If Daryl Hall Likes It (Exclusive)

In March 2022, Hall expressed uncertainty at the prospect of the "Rich Girl" musicians coming back together for a new album anytime soon. "I have no idea. I don’t have any plans to work with John. I mean, whatever. Time will tell," he told The Los Angeles Times.

During an appearance on the Club Random with Bill Maher podcast in September 2022, Hall opened up about the state of his relationship to Oates. “You think John Oates is my partner? … He’s my business partner. He’s not my creative partner," he said at the time.

"John and I are brothers, but we are not creative brothers. We are business partners," continued Hall. "We made records called Hall & Oates together, but we’ve always been very separate, and that’s a really important thing for me."

Earlier this year, Oates recorded and released a reggae version of Hall & Oates' 1982 hit "Maneater" with producer Native Wayne Jobson and a lineup of legendary reggae musicians, inspired by his original vision for the song.

Oates revealed to PEOPLE in September that he wasn't sure Hall had listened to the song's new version, which was released in May. "Nope, I haven't heard from him," he said at the time. "I'm not even sure if he has or hasn't heard it."

Awww Lew, I liked the original title of the thread... 😏🎃

Sounds like a money lawsuit.

Funny, when I was a teenager, I loved H&O.

Nowadays when I listen to those songs, I find myself not enjoying DH's voice anymore and finding it a bit thin & screechy.

I do love Oates' voice.

Sounds like a Simon&Garfunkle story. Apparantly Daryl made some remarks last year during a podcast relating to his relationship with Oates. It was reported that he referred to Oates as his business partner, not a creative partner. Sad that after all these years (they began working together in 1968!) a great collaboration is going up in flames. I am the opposite of Susie... I was never into Hall & Oates back in the 70's or 80's, but only in the past 6 years, when I discovered the streaming show, "Live From Daryl's House". There would be a different artist as Daryl's guest at his Pawling, NY, studio/club. They would perform both H&O songs as well as the guest's songs. It was a really entertaining show, and I gained a respect for Hall as a musician and writer...he reminds me of Eric: keyboard and guitar player, composer, singer. The shows with Joe Walsh, Smokey Robinson, The O' Jays , Todd Rundgren, Booker T, Darius Rucker, Cheap Trick, Aaron Neville, and Wyclef Jean are among my favorites. Too bad he hasn't yet done a show with our own Eric Carmen. Now that would be something! Daryl had John Oates on the show several times during the first 2 years, 2007-2008. A new season of 6 episodes was released on Youtube just this month (November). The following link may or may not work, but it is a great example of what the show has to offer. I am just blown away by artists continuing to create and perform well past the time when most people have retired...Daryl is 77 years old. God Bless him.

They say we get better and wiser with age, and I know some of us do....but many don´t. Look at all the break ups and fights between band members in their golden years. Fleetwood Mac´s Stevie & Lindsey (though I´m a huge admirer of Lindsey B as a creative force, hard worker etc. but it was probably his fault there as he can be a real asshole if you´ve read anything on their history), H&O, Eric Carmen and Wally Bryson, Heart, REO (Gary forced Kevin to fire him in their mid 30s)..and many more.

It´s sad....I´d hope people could have more love and less bs, especially in their later years.

Also, Daryl better have a good reason to get a RO against Oates, as he with the restraining order has all but painted, to the public, Oates as a psycho. If he doesn´t have a tremendously good reason for doing the RO, then he is a bastard, imho.

Apparently it has something to do with Daryl trying to prevent John from selling his share of the songs they wrote together to a third party. Not sure he can do that, but there's something about how their songwriting contract was originally written up that prevented him from sharing some details with the prospective buyer.

There is a podcast from September, 2022, on Youtube with Bill Maher doing a 55 minute intimate one-on-one interview with Daryl Hall. Daryl did not speak very fondly of John Oates in that session. It was a really interesting chat. Daryl Hall is going on 78 years old and he is as sharp as a tack. He has some interesting insights on song writing, the singing voice, and super stardom. He also reveals that on most of the H&O hits, he was doing all of the singing. I recommend it.

That is exactly it. John wants to cash in and have some financial security down the home stretch. You would think a 60-million-dollar net worth is secure enough, but it all comes down to bills and liquidity. I am not sure how this would affect Daryl Hall, but it very well could from a financial standpoint.
