Matthew C. Clark
YEP, Martin Matthews disliked "She Remembered" though!!!
Raspbernie
Don't be holding "She Remembered" hostage on this "Worst Album" list or I'll be forced to add "Cartoon World" to mine!
Rhonda B
Wow....surprised at some of these entries. I was just amused reading all the lists. No right or wrong answers but anything from Eric's catalog I would never say I dislike or call them bad songs. I can't recall ever skipping over songs while listening to a whole album of his. But there are definitely songs I like more than others. The reason I'm commenting now is because I saw She Remembered on the list. OUCH! Other shockers to see on the lists: Everything, Change of Heart, Runaway, Never Gonna Fall in Love Again. But we all have our reasons for why some songs touch us deeply and others do not. The best thing is, it stirred up some activity here. ps. Wouldn't we all love to see Eric's list of his least favorite songs he wrote or performed.
Kirk
Eric offered up these 4 in another thread, although he relented on YTMATW in a later post: Eric- "Hmmm, I'll have to think about this. Right off the top of my head: "Waiting" I hate my vocal on that one. "You Took Me All The Way" John Kalodner forced me to rewrite "Go All The Way". It was a ridiculous assignment. "I Reach For The Light" a dumb premise and too Beatlesque "End Of The World" Too BeeGees and just not up to snuff." 2
Rhonda B
Thanks Kirk. I can nod my head at a few of those but not "Waiting".

But we all have our reasons for why some songs touch us deeply and others do not. Oops, sorry that was me. I realize they were both pretty big hits and one of them is partly Rach-inspired, but I find them kind of, I dunno, sing-songy? Perhaps if the lyrics were more soaring and unique I'd dig them more. I always appreciate when a fandom is able to temper the undying admiration for its subject with just a touch of irreverence and a critical viewpoint. No artiste is perfectly infallible. Even those I consider bigger songwriting talents than EC--such as one of my personal fave-raves Ray Davies--have offered up the occasional stinkeroo. I think it's OK to acknowledge that, as long as one isn't too obnoxious about it. [Speaking of Ray...I happen to like the oft-maligned "You Took Me ATW," even though I'm completely aware it's a total cheese-fest, because I have a soft spot for the "let's rip myself off" genre, "Destroyer" being one of the all-time finest examples thereof. To me the only egregious part of "You Took Me" is the electronic drums.]
Rhonda B
RCT: No apologies needed. So amazing to see everyone lending their opinions here...that's great. Everybody can't agree on everything all of the time. We all have reasons for our choices as well. Even Eric. Nice to get these conversations going. 🙂
Kirk
What's next? Eric's worst hair day?? O.k., I'll start LOL: 1

It's the beard stubble that makes me grin because I love a clean-shaven guy, and also because he was rarely photographed that way (only other time I've seen EC with the stubble is on that Raspberries recording studio footage with Jimmy Ienner!) Helen G
For the record...... I ***LOVE*** Spotlight! I think it's overall really "turn up the speakers and let 'er rip" kick-ass rock and roll and that middle section where it goes into a sort of "Switched-On Bach" mode - not kidding - starting at 1:51 then that descending bass at 2:15 - OH YEAH! I dig that stuff! The only "ho hum" EC songs that I skip over if I have limited EC/Raspberries listening time on any given day (if you can even really say that about any of his compositions are (IMO of course): Take It or Leave It I Think I Found Myself I'm not particularly wild about his Motown-style offerings like: End of the World That's a bit of a yawner for me. 😉
RCT
Kirk, that's at least a decent hair day for sure. Looks like the basis for this sketch: 1

susie b
EC is in good company with Brian Wilson who also produced some of THE best songs of the rock era, yet he also wrote some horrible album fillers. I remember that Ira had started a thread on Beach Boy bombs a few years back. I have yet to make my EC list, but one song that just bugs me is Hungry Eyes. I know it was a hit, and it is perfectly written & executed, but it just bugs me. If it plays on my car radio, I listen to it out of a sense of obligation rather than love. I know James is going to say that this nonsense is coming from the girl who has Sloop John B on her skip list, too. 😊
Kirk
Susie, for someone who is eloquent on most occasions, your using the phrase 'it just bugs me', not once, but twice- well, it just made me chuckle! 1
