Rhonda B
2 hours ago, LC said: Meanwhile, it's interesting that there's one non-single that seems to be a "must" — it's near-unanimous, showing up on five of the six lists here. That would be "Love Is All That Matters." Aside from the many comments I've made on this particular song, Love is all that Matters, on this site other times, one of the truly beautiful things is the use of counterpoint that Eric has employed in this song. Counterpoint is 2 (or more) existing melodies going on at the same time which is easily done on the piano because you have a right hand and a left hand part. If you can just isolate the piano while you're listening (I know that's difficult) but you can hear his right hand and his left hand playing 2 different melodies against each other. And then add his voice and the other instruments doing the same. So beautiful, so entertaining, so genius. How can you not love this song just for that alone. Love those ooo's at the very end as well.. reminiscent of The Beach Boys. Rhonda B.
LC
Thank you for that insight. Not being a trained musician, I do appreciate those types of details (as I do with all those John Stewart songs)! In general, I'm not particularly fond of gooey, pandering, mushy, breathless, "hopelessly devoted" love songs. But I still dig "Love Is All That Matters." In fact, it almost transcends the "love song" genre. The first comment on the YouTube link above said: "I just have a strong feeling that whenever i listen to this song, i can apply the meaning/lyrics to Jesus—faithful and forever is His love and that He is all that matters or at least, first of all in my/our lives." Perhaps too spiritual for some or many, but I like the point she made.
Kirk
LC, to your point on the you tube commenter, Connie Scott did a cover of Love Is All That Matters in the mid 80's. She was a contemporary Christian artist and only changed one word in the entire song, on the last 'Love has set me free' she substituted 'Lord' for 'Love'. So yes, her interpretation of Eric's song allows for spiritual leanings. IIRC, I sent this song Bernie's way when he was compiling the songs for Ericcarmenundercover and it made its way onto one of the discs.
Craig Benfer
Ok, so here's my list. I adapted Rhonda's idea of how it opens up. I've taken that one step further. The Encore begins with Eric doing the full version of Desperate Fools and as it ends, the last note is held until you here the opening piano keys to All By Myself. Show ends with a rockin rendition of That's Rock 'N' Roll. I also liked Bernie's leading into Hungry Eyes & Make Me Lose Control after Sunrise. Obviously, there are some sacrifices that have to made, and I love the idea of giving the fans a treat with a non-release song such as Cindy In The Wind. I've actually timed this out, and with this set list, there is 115 minutes of music. When adding the song gaps, this puts Eric on the stage for just a few minutes more than 2 hours. If that's too long...tough! It's his punishment for making us wait so long for this show. 1. Deperate Fools Overture / Sunrise (per Rhonda) 2. Hungry Eyes 3. Make Me Lose Control 4. Change Of Heart 5. Runaway 6. Love Is All That Matters 7. My Girl 8. Hey Deanie 9. Fooling Myself 10. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again 11. I'm Through With Love 12. She Did It 13. Hey Deanie 14. I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips 15. The Way We Used Yo Be 16. Almost Paradise 17. Boats Against The Current 18. I Wanna Be With You 19. Tonight 20. Let's Pretend 21. Overnight Sensation 22. It Hurts Too Much 23. Go All The Way Encore: 24. Desperate Fools 25. All By Myself 26. That's Rock 'N' Roll

LC
Stellar setlist, Craig. I like your clusters of mid-tempo songs, ballads, 'berries, and Beach-Boys-flavored numbers. And your Exhibit A — the segue from "Desperate Fools" to "All By Myself" — works extremely well... a match made in heaven. The only nitpick I'd have would be "Run Away" as the 5th song. It feels more like a late-in-the-show presentation. Maybe because I'm used to hearing it close out the Boats album... although Eric eventually told us that he originally planned "Run Away" as the album's leadoff track. Well, Eric has another great setlist to consider. Now he can start putting together a band. Won't need much: a Bryson-quality lead guitarist... an ace on bass... a versatile rhythm guitarist who can also play lead... a keyboards/synth player... a drummer (or two, as we know he has toured with double drummers)... four back-up vocalists... and maybe a string quartet? Yes, definitely he should have some live strings on hand for a number of the songs we'd expect. Oh, and somebody in the band needs to be able to handle a harmonica... just for "Desperate Fools." And if Eric opts for "I Don't Know What I Want," he'll need somebody who can handle the cowbell.

I would like to do the Everything/Overnight Sensation piece that Eric started with at one of his Roxy shows.
Craig Benfer
Kirk...How did he do it? Did he do a seamless transition just like I did with mine? Did he extend the last note of Everything longer than the record?
Kirk
Yes, Eric held the last note to Everything with the sustain pedal on the piano, then started the piano intro to Overnight Sensation. Eric wrote both songs in the same key.
Aventurine
I also make a 2023 tour set list. Plan purpose is "The STORY of My Absent by Eric Carmen". The concert is starts just like conversation with Eric and fans. Fans said "I am waiting. If you Change Your Mind", then Eric says "Starting Over" with you! coz "I Was Born To Love You". Then he start singing. Love is grow and grow but love will end. But it's a story, cartoon! 1. Waiting 2. If You Change Your Mind 3. Starting Over 4. I Was Born To Love You 5. Isn’t It Romantic 6. Almost Paradise 7. Lets Pretend 8. Tonight 9. Ecstasy 10. Make Me Lose Control Intermission Sergei Rachmaninov 150 Memorial 11. All By Myself 12. Never Gonna Fall in Love Again 13. Love Is All That Matters 14. Forever Tonight 15. Boats Against The Current 16. Run Away 17. I Can Remember 18. The Way We Used To Be 19. Cartoon World 20. That’s Rock & Roll 21. Go All The Way Enore 1 22. Someday 23. You Need Some Lovin' Enore 2 24. Brand New Year

LC
Yay Naeko — a perfect concert! Thank you for coming in and taking the challenge. I think Eric would be very touched to see you along with all the other devoted fans here post our ideas and wishes for the perfect set list. Some thoughts on your picks: Your "conversation" between Eric and fans is very cute, and apropos. The messages are right there in his songs. Starting out a concert with "Waiting" would be very dramatic and surprising and moving. Good call! Kirk will be happy to see "Starting Over" in there — his favorite. Your Nos. 4, 5, and 6 give the perfect sampling from his final album. And it's a nice change-up to follow those romantic songs with there lively Raspberries songs. I love your back-to-back Carmen/Rachmaninov tribute. No one else did that, but those two songs do go well together, as we know from that 1975 album. Later, I love the idea of settling back for 20 minutes of musical beauty in three songs: "Boats" followed by the 8-minute masterpieces "Run Away" and "I Can Remember." "TR&R" and "GATW" would provide fireworks as back-to-back concert-closers, before your encores. A "Brand New Year" is a creative pick for the final encore. Again, no one else plugged Eric's last composition into this show. Nice touch! Way to go, Naeko — thanks again!
Aventurine
Well, Craig, LC. I chose some songs from WINTER DREAMS and BNY. Once Eric wrote that "I don't want living in the past. I want to do something new", perhaps the time when Eric mentioned Raspberries re-reunion. So I planed to add something new. In this list I intend "Operatic" constitution and songs we never heard him sing on the stage.

Helen G
So I go out of town for 10 days and am pretty much AFK (away from keyboard) and browser screen/internet access much of that time, and this thread pops up! Wow! How fun!! Well color me totally inspired to put my name and some demos in the hopper to be a back-up singer!!! YEAH! I'll come up with my list within 24 hours..... 😉 after I've finished unpacking and getting back to my daily life after attending a really big deal event in the a cappella / barbershop genre world in which I live with my husband who served as contest chairman adjudicating 19 quartets from WA/ID to FL/GA and NY to CA/AZ! 15 hour drive one way to San Antonio because we schlepped along my husband's day job computer setup AND the different computer setup with my high speed color printer that spat out scoresheets and scoring summaries for all contest participants and event attendees to mull over after the contest. 😉

LC
Dave, very creative on top of being a worthy setlist. I especially dig the "Me Myself and I" set... and the "Body Parts" set is even better — mind, eyes, lips, hands, and heart all get a spot. Nicely done! And to top it off, you worked in "Cindy in the Wind."
