LC
As long as there are sites out there doing robotically generated EC setlists (per this Lew Bundles thread), we might as well come up with our own. If Eric were to do some live dates at this point in his life, and: • were to keep a show to a reasonable length: say, 22 songs and five encores (for about a two-hour show, vs. the three-hour marathons of the Springsteens of the world) • were to draw from his whole career • were to tackle hits as well as worthy deep cuts and maybe a cover or two • were to employ a band that can really play • and were to enlist backup vocalists who can cover the vocal stretches... ... it might look like the following. I welcome alternative setlists based on your biases. Pure fantasy, I know, but... what else do we have to talk about? Lol My offering has 17 solos, nine Raspberries, and one cover. There's maybe not enough rock-oriented songs, but... his solo work was more on the ballad side. 1. Sunrise 2. Hungry Eyes 3. Make Me Lose Control 4. Never Gonna Fall in Love Again 5. Almost Paradise 6. Let's Pretend (Raspberries) 7. Go All the Way (Raspberries) 8. Tonight (Raspberries) 9. No Hard Feelings 10. My Girl 11. On the Beach (Raspberries) 12. She Did It 13. I Can Remember (Raspberries) 14. Starting Over (Raspberries) 15. Love Is All That Matters 16. I Can Hardly Believe You're Mine (Raspberries) 17. The Way We Used to Be 18. Waiting (Raspberries) 19. I'm Through with Love 20. Desperate Fools 21. Everything 22. Boats Against the Current Encores 23. It Hurts Too Much 24. That's Rock'n'Roll 25. Walk Away Renee (cover) 26. Overnight Sensation (Raspberries) 27. All By Myself
Raspbernie
That's a pretty good list, LC... but with 27 songs, you might be keeping Eric on stage for a bit too long. I don't think he's a McCartney or Springsteen in that respect. Also, I like how you're starting with a couple of big tunes, but I think you're piling up too many at the start without enough at the end. Anyway, I can truncate you list and maybe add a twist or two like this: 1. Sunrise 2. Hungry Eyes 3. Make Me Lose Control 4. Almost Paradise 5. Let's Pretend (Raspberries) 6. My Girl 7. She Did It 8. Hey Deanie Piano Set 9. Love Is All That Matters 10. I'm Through with Love 11. Fooling' Myself 12. Never Gonna Fall in Love Again 13. Boats Against the Current 14. I Wanna Be With You (Raspberries) 15. It Hurts Too Much 16. Tonight (Raspberries) 17. Overnight Sensation (Raspberries) 18. Marathon Man 19. Go All The Way (Raspberries) Encores 20. That's Rock 'N' Roll 21. All By Myself I'd see that! Hell, I'd buy tickets just to see him tune a piano! 😎
James
Fun thread, good one LC. Surprised your list doesn´t include what could be Eric´s best song, "Foolin Myself"....but we all have our different druthers. Let me give this a shot. My picks also are weighted more heavily to his solo music as this is a solo show. Also I will accept deserved criticism for not including the 2 great ballads from Geffen. 1. My Girl 2. Inside Story 3. Sunrise ( ...pretty upbeat punching opening 3 ...) 4. Cartoon World 5. Never Gonna Fall in Love Again 6. Waiting 7. If you change your mind 8. I wanna hear it from your lips 9. Hey Deanie....a more rocking version than the studio version 10. Overnight Sensation ::::: INTERMISSION::::: 11. Boats Against the Current 12. Someday 13. All By Myself 14. Heaven Can Wait 15. She Did It...gotta have some strong backing vocals harmonizing on this one live 16. I think I found myself (would be cool live, an underrated song of Eric´s) 17. Everything 18. Desperate Fools 19. Make Me Lose Control 20. No Hard Feelings Encore 21. Foolin Myself 22. That´s Rock & Roll .....a la The Midnight Special rocking live version Encore, 2nd 23. I can remember Encore, 3rd and final 24. Love is all that matters
LC
Well-done, Bernie and James. There's a lot to recommend in both of your setlists — I'll address 'em just below. You guys brought up things I didn't think of, even in my all-encompassing slave-driver mode. Yes, if I were the Tour Sponsor Rep negotiating this deal with EC Agent Bernie, I'd be pushing for at least 27 songs. I estimated out the time, and the music itself would take just about 2 hours. Of course, we all know the between-song banter, intermission, and breaks before the encore(s) would push this thing to 2 hours and 30 minutes — or 2 hours and 45 minutes. I agree that's too much for someone not used to doing marathon shows. So, sure, I'd cave in. Especially when Agent Bernie played the cards up his sleeve. Sponsor Rep LC: We need 27 songs, Bernie.Agent Bernie: No can do. Twenty at the most. We need to keep the show under two hours.Sponsor Rep LC: It's gotta be 27 so we can justify the first-class accommodations and unlimited supply of Diet Coke. Twenty-seven. It's only another 35 minutes.Agent Bernie: If you hold out for 27, I've gotta tell ya: That set list does not include "All By Myself," "Go All the Way," or "Hungry Eyes."Sponsor Rep LC: Ugh. Agent Bernie: Or "Boats Against the Current." We know that's your favorite. Sponsor Rep LC: Fine. You can cut down the set list.... Hey, can you at least give us 21? Agent Bernie: Fine, I'm in a good mood... 21 it is. But don't be surprised if Eric opts for the short version of "All By Myself." Sponsor Rep LC: We'll take our chances. We think he'll do the Rachmaninoff bit in the middle. He can't help himself...Agent Bernie: Fair enough. I'll let him know it's his option. One other thing: NO Steve Miller or Sweet in the piped-in music before the show! All that said, I think maybe the answer is in the middle... James's 24-song set? PS: Kirk wants to see both of you in his office about your exclusion of "Starting Over." 1
LC
Bernie, good call on my front-loaded set list. I was trying to keep the energy level high with recognizable hits. But your little Beach-Boys-inspired run in the opening set does just that — your songs 5 through 8 would light up any venue. Plus, getting "Let's Pretend" and "My Girl" done early is smart (I did essentially the same); the voice will be fresher earlier in the show. Also, I love your formalizing of a Piano Set. I had the same thought with songs 18 through 22 on my list. However, those songs were my last five before encores, and I think that was a mistake. Need to close out the pre-encore run of songs with energy, as you've done with "Marathon Man" and "Go All the Way." Good call on your adds of "Marathon" along with "Deanie" and "Fooling Myself." However, you have to admit it's a little ironic that the guy who sings "Marathon Man" is keeping his set list to 21! 🤣 😂 On the down side, it hurts too much to see you cut two of my favorite deep cuts, "I Can Hardly Believe You're Mine" and "On the Beach." However, with a shorter set list, something's gotta go, and those are songs most wouldn't know. Overall, spectacular plan!
LC
James, outstanding... I like that you included "I Think I Found Myself" and "Someday." The former I think would be a really haunting vibe in concert, and "Someday" would be a real uplifter. Bernie and I both have Eric opening with "Sunrise" — it's got that great build-up, killer melody, and explosive tag. However, I dig "My Girl" as an opener too. Considering the top-shelf group of three or four backup vocalists we'll have on hand (Jennifer Lee should be chief among them), "My Girl" would establish their presence right off. I also like your pairing of "If You Change Your Mind" and "I Wanna Hear It from Your Lips." Nice juxtaposition there... mind and lips! And good call on the Intermission. Slave-driver me... I wasn't planning on one. (Bernie built one in with his Piano Set, it seems). And I love "Boats" coming out of the intermission. You and I both tapped "Everything" and "No Hard Feelings," which were casualties on Bernie's list. Though not well-known, "Everything" showcases a side of Eric that people should see. And pairing it with "Desperate Fools" makes sense — they're kind of similar, aren't they? As for "No Hard Feelings," I have it capping a mini-Raspberries run starting with the 6th song. Right in a row, my audience would get "Let's Pretend," "Go All the Way," and "Tonight" — followed up by the song that explains the story of Raspberries. I thought it was clever, but I think I'd be better off sliding that four-song 'berries run to a later spot in the show. Imagine the strain on Eric's voice caused by the primal screaming in the "No Hard Feelings" tag ... Ouch! And then I had him going into "My Girl." (I'd better edit mine already....) One other thing: You're depriving the audience of "Go All the Way"! Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack buyers will be sorely disappointed! Overall, though, what a show!
Kirk
I decided to make my list from Eric's suggestions for a solo concert. I found a list of 10 songs that were his personal favorites, then found another list that Eric put together with his picks for a great solo concert. Of the 2 lists, 9 of the 10 songs on the first list overlapped the second list, so Eric is pretty consistent. The one omission on the second list was All By Myself, so I added it to that list. I also added 2 songs of my own choosing, Everything, and Starting Over. That made 26 songs in total with an intermission and an encore segment. Without further ado, here's Eric's set list with my two additions in the order I chose: 1. Everything 2. Overnight Sensation (This one-two punch opened one of his Roxy concerts and sent chills down my spine) 3. Boats Against The Current Move from piano to guitar 4. Someday 5. Hey Deanie 6. That’s Rock And Roll (The ‘Shaun Cassidy’ dual hits) 7. I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips Back to the piano 8. Nowhere To Hide 9. Run Away 10. Make Me Lose Control 11. Hungry Eyes (80’s dual hits) Intermission 12. Sunrise 13. Almost Paradise 14. I Wanna Be With You 15. Let’s Pretend 16. Tonight (Raspberries trifecta) Piano ballad segment 17. Desperate Fools 18. She Remembered 19. The Way We Used To Be 20. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again Back to guitar 21. Last Night 22. She Did It 23. American As Apple Pie Encore 24. All By Myself 25. Starting Over (dedicated to Kirk LOL) 26. Go All The Way
LC
Another great one... Kudos for the research you did in finding Eric's preferences for a live show. And good move to cluster runs of guitar and piano songs. Your one-two punch to open is inspired (literally and figuratively). And I appreciate your back-to-back placement of the great Boats ballads "Nowhere to Hide" and "Run Away." And it sure would be sweet to see "She Remembered" and "Last Night" live.... And nice touch with the dedication of "Starting Over." Apropos! You know, all four of us so far have setlists that are more packed with Top 40 hits than one might expect — including Eric's own recordings and those by other artists. There are four Raspberries Tops 40s and seven EC Top 40s (and none of us included one of them, "Change of Heart," which reached No. 19). There are a couple of Shaun Cassidy Top 10s, plus there's "Almost Paradise," a No. 7 for Reno/Wilson. So, each of us has around a dozen Top 40 chart hits. Plus there are a few others that at least cracked the Top 100 ("Boats" and "It Hurts Too Much," for example). Yeah, I'd buy tickets to any of these shows.
LC
PS: I forgot to mention a special feature of my setlist: We'll be flying Wally Bryson in to play guitar on that run of Raspberries hits ("Let's Pretend," "Go All the Way," and "Tonight") — PLUS we'd pay him enough to play lead on "No Hard Feelings." AND we'll have Paul Stanley of Kiss on hand to play rhythm guitar on "Go All the Way" and "Tonight." Now there's a guitar attack worth seeing!

Lew Bundles
One of the challenges that an act like EC has is the dearth of recognizable tunes to the general public…So he really needs to space them out a bit and don’t leave any of them out…That’s why I would include Change Of Heart somewhere (I don’t think anybody inserted that one)…As much as some of you guys want to hear “obscurities ” like Everything or Desperate Fools(which in my opinion are the bottom dregs of his catalogue), he needs to include all “recognizables”… Also, Maybe he can do an acoustic bit in the middle of the show with If You Change Your Mind, Nobody Knows and Let’s Pretend… Pretty cool thread, LC… P.S.-I would open with I Wanna Be With You and with the lights down after the acoustic set or the beginning of an encore is when I would start with those “Daybreak” sounds of Sunrise”

Rhonda B
Love this thread and seeing everyone's ideas here. Thank you for starting it LC. Soooo..I have been mulling this set list over. However, I tend to be a little dramatic in how I think concerts should be. Not sure if Eric would agree with this but here we go. First of all, Desperate Fools Overture is a very moving little piece. It somehow gives me visions of an old western movie with the characters riding off on their horses into the sunset so to speak. But let's say to begin, the stage is all dark and we hear a string quartet playing Desperate Fools Overture. Then slowly the lights fade in and a fantastic video presentation comes on the screens designed by none other than Bernie Hogya. The overture ends on a long sustained high note played by the strings as you hear in the original recording. So wouldn't it be great if that sustained string note is held out and it actually blends seemlessly into the intro of Sunrise...which begins with a high sustained note (although it's synthesized) in the intro. However, they are both played in different keys. But that could be easily taken care of as Eric's voice will be singing in lower keys at this stage of the game. (and Eric is an expert at key modulations). So as soon as the vocal part of Sunrise begins, Eric will be revealed in a full lit stage playing at the piano and singing his vocals. ( I agreed with many of the choices that some of you had and the order, but I also have my own take with my favourites). So the stage is set and here is my set list as I see it: Opening: Desperate Fools Overture 1. Sunrise 2. Never Gonna Fall in Love Again 3. Love Is All That Matters 4. Make Me Lose Control 5. Almost Paradise 6. Hungry eyes 7. She Did It 8. My Girl 9. It Hurts too Much Raspberries Set: ( An appearance by Wally Bryson would be greatly appreciated anywhere in this set). 10. Waiting 11. Let's Pretend 12. I Can Remember 13. Starting Over 14. Go all the Way Back to the Piano: 15. I'm Through with Love 16. She Remembered 17. Last Night 18. Change of Heart 19. Desperate Fools 20. Boats Against the Current Encores 21. The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (The real fans of Eric Carmen know that this song would have to be performed..albeit a shorter version) 22. That's Rock'n'Roll 23. Everything 24. All By Myself Then of course the string quartet returns to play Desperate Fools Overture "Reprise" as the stage fades to black and Eric and the band leave inconspicuously with a sunset beautifully displayed on screen. That's it! (Bernie.. I would pay for Eric Carmen just to come out and stand beside the piano).
blackhawkpat
I’ll try to mix it up a little bringing it up, bringing it down, etc. also taking into account him switching between piano and guitar. 1.Sunrise 2. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again 3. I Wanna Be With You 4. Tonight 5. Let’s Pretend 6. It Hurts Too Much 7. Love Is All That Matters 8. The Way We Used To Be 9. Hungry Eyes 10. Hey Deanie 11. If You Change Your Mind 12. She Did It Intermission…. 1. Boats Against The Current 2. Starting Over 3. Overnight Sensation 4. Make Me Lose Control 5. All By Myself 6. Someday 7. My Girl 8. Play On 9. Ecstasy 10. That’s Rock n Roll Encores 1. Be My Baby 2. Twist and Shout 3. Go All The Way

Kirk
Rhonda, I like your thoughtful opening. It's similar in concept to my opening- except it happened for real. Eric opens one of his Roxy concerts with Everything on the piano. Before the last note (sustained with the pedal) fades completely out, Eric rolls into the intro to Overnight Sensation! I thought that was so cool I went home after the concert and started a cassette tape with the same duo- and yes, they are in the same key! 3

First, Pat: You're closer to the slavedriver approach I'm using: 26 songs (only one less than me), and five more than the low end (Bernie's 21). Really, we're not far apart, from most to least. We'll give Eric a say. Who knows... He might say "Listen to Bernie!" Or he might say "What—27 songs? I can do 30 or so..." We're both wanting nine Raspberries songs, though they differ a bit. Good call on "If You Change Your Mind" and "Play On," the latter kicking of a trifecta of power-pop examples (with "Ecstasy" and "TR&R") to close the main part of the show. Good calls on the covers, too. Whereas I had just "Walk Away Renee," your ideas for "Be My Baby" and "Twist and Shout" would work great. I like "Twist and Shout" near the end. You want to make sure his voice will be shredded when he does it, a la John Lennon on that fabled day-long recording session where the Beatles did "Twist and Shout" late at night. And "Someday" is in demand... You, Kirk, and James have it in your sets. Another I hated leaving out.

I think we all can envision the classical-sounding "Desperate Fools" opening segueing into "Sunrise." It's a perfect mood-setter that builds in the type of "surprising musical change" for which EC is known. Eric, if you're lurking around, here's a great blueprint for your comeback (or farewell) (or both) concert. Rhonda, you front-loaded your setlist with Top 40 hits, as I did. Bernie made a point of spreading out the radio successes, which also has its advantages. But for me, it seemed like a good "hook" to knock off a run of consecutive hits at the top. It's interesting that you put the Raspberries songs in one mid-concert package. Of course, with that approach, you had to be a little stingier than others (me included) in terms of sheer numbers. I do like "Waiting" in there, but I'd have to push hard for "Overnight Sensation." You couldn't have picked a better unreleased gem than "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea." Maybe "Cindy in the Wind." But I can't argue. Bravo! 1
LC
Hoping a few others chime in here.... Craig? Susie? Doreen? Vinnie? Other regulars? And Lew? Your few comments above don't count... Do a whole concert setlist, not a guest appearance on a variety show! Meanwhile, it's interesting that there's one non-single that seems to be a "must" — it's near-unanimous, showing up on five of the six lists here. That would be "Love Is All That Matters." As many here have said, "LIATM" would have killed on Top-40 radios — if Arista had chosen it as a single and if it had found some traction. James feels strongly enough about it that he's got it as the grand finale of his encores. That is a place of honor."Love Is All That Matters" may be the most beloved of Eric's deep cuts, right? The other deep cut that's in high demand is "Everything": It showed up on four of the six setlists above. Kirk feels so strongly about it that he's got it leading off his show. PS: "LIATM" has such a huge cult following... It's big in Japan, as we know from all the covers. And this version on YouTube has 2.5M views and almost 750 comments. Yep, it should have been a hit.
Rhonda B
Ah yes LC.. Cindy in the Wind. I had to ponder which one of his unreleased beauties to add. I thought adding too many would take away from the concert. But as you know I can never abandon The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Thanks LC for your positive and respectful comments on our EC set lists. It is so amusing to read everyone's choices here. We know everyone has their personal reasons or it's just a matter of musical tastes. Fun stuff. Thank you! If nothing else, it's entertaining to vividly imagine, for me anyway, an Eric Carmen concert such as this, with these suggestions.
