Preference for using a more "hip"-sounding middle name seems more common among British music types (it was cute to hear other Beatles call Paul "Jim" in the Get Back doc), but it's not unheard of among Yanks...such as EC's fellow Buckeye, Noel Scott Engel (Walker).

Eric was not even that fond of "Eric" as many of his friends called him "Rick" or "Ricky."
