Social media has evolved over the past 30 years, but at one time or another we have all used screen names to protect our privacy.

Many of us on this message board know the true identities of our fellow board members through concerts, get-togethers, FB, etc.

We have lost a long time member today because his trust was thoughtlessly violated.  I am truly sad at his exit as he was one of the first members to welcome me to ec.com.

Since this site is frequented by so many non-members, I feel that we should honor the privacy of our fellow members.

I was recently made aware that with the updates to the site, non-members have access to our personal profile pages.  It didn't used to be like that.

Now any guest can access what you have posted on your personal page.

A close friend who has never registered as member on the site told me this information.

Be aware that the only private "members only" categories are Cartoon World and Ecstasy (for supporters only).

Obviously this pertains to Batman leaving because I used his real first name…NEVER in a million years did I think that was gonna be a game breaker for him but for some  reason, that post violated his anonymity, which he seemed to value…I apologize profusely and am indeed saddened by his departure…He is a great poster with a valued history and truly hope he reconsiders his exit and we all look at it as a learning experience…

Back in March Batman contacted me after speaking with a mutual friend who I had just had lunch with. I told him his identity was safe with me. Sorry to see him exposed and even more sorry to see him go. Hope you'll consider coming back (with a new i.d.)!

I was friends with Batman's 1st incarnation here, as were others, so if anyone was wronged, I feel it was us who were deceived, though it's not a huge deal. Just my take.

P.S. Batman is an incredibly valuable member here. Hyper smart, hyper knowledgable and erudite,  often funnier than all heck...and a really good guy.  His posts were always must reads. I hope he continues to post here.

FYI, I was not able to hide Member Profiles from Guests, but I did hide birthdays, which probably shouldn't be visible anyway. Email addresses have NEVER been visible to Guests or Members. Everyone should check the other info to make sure you're cool with it being public—especially location if you're in the Witness Protection Program. I changed mine from "City, State" to just "State." That way Lew can't drive over to picket outside my house to become Moderator.

By the way, one thing that can help keep things private when a Member is looking to post somewhat anonymously is to always refer to Members by their screen name, even if you know their real name. Could be helpful advice for the future.
