Raspberries 50th Anniversary

Recommended Posts

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Raspberries' debut album. On April 10, 1972, the first album from Eric Carmen, Wally Bryson, Jim Bonfanti and Dave Smalley was unleashed on the world. Opening with a guitar riff that exploded on radios that summer, "Go All The Way" quickly became the benchmark sound for the power pop group. In celebration of this momentous anniversary, EricCarmen.com proudly presents a look back at our beloved band. So, grab a drink. Sit back and watch. Pull out that half-century vinyl LP from your attic and scratch that sticker. Raspberries turn 50 today.

PS: Happy Birthday Raspberries! As Eric quoted writer David Wilde as saying, Raspberries were our Beatles. Personally, the Beatles' Ed Sullivan appearances were just a wee early for me. I have ever-so-faint memories of those B&W moments — though I do remember suddenly "waking up" for the "Hey Jude" video on a talk show one Sunday night in 1968. A couple years later, "Let It Be" became an instant favorite. But just like that—the Fab Four broke up. And within a couple years, that awesome blast of Beatlesque rock'n'roll, "Go All the Way," grabbed me for good.

Happy Golden Anniversary to a great band that has given us so much "gold" over the years. Typically superior video by Bernie. Thank you for the memories.

April 10th also happens to be my youngest child's birthday, so there is indeed a Raspberries influence in my life!

Had to laugh...

Got in the car to head to the barn for afternoon feeding, and I pushed the radio "on" button.

Go All the Way had just begun to play on one of my favorite oldies stations, and I'm thinking to myself that I had just seen the same thing in Bernie's video a few hours earlier.

Coincidence or kismet????

Good Carmen karma!!!!

The radio station is one of the few small independents left in the area.

I was wondering if the program director knew of today's milestone or if he just knows good music.

They always have an eclectic song mix.

LC, the interviews were done by VH1 when the band was at their studios in 2005. It was quite difficult to edit them together into a cohesive history of the band, but I think I managed to come up with a nice narrative.

Kirk, the amazing HD reunion footage is from the band's 2007 gig in Los Angeles. Hopefully, one day the full show will be available to the fans.

Until then, here's a great article on Raspberries' 50th Anniversary, with commentary from Jim Bonfanti:

Craig,

A number of Raspberries' reunion shows were pro-shot including the first show, New Year's Eve, Scene Pavillion, Atlantic City, Los Angeles (2005 & 2007) and Highline Ballroom. The 2007 Los Angeles show was filmed in HD, a relatively new technology at the time.

Not only the HD, but the Raspberries absolutely kicked butt for the first several songs until the in-ear monitors stopped working. I can't remember how many songs they got in- maybe 5 or 6- even Eric agreed, it was the hardest hitting start to any reunion show. Everybody was playing and singing at their best in 2007 in Hollywood!
