Deep Tracks - Eric Carmen

Recommended Posts

Excellent choice, Craig- would be mine, also. Eric used to talk about You Took Me All The Way as the son of Go All The Way. I always felt like Foolin' Myself was the son of All By Myself, only better!

This album has some great songs on it and often ends up as my favorite Eric solo album. Take these 3 in a row: Tonight You're Mine, Sleep With Me, Inside Story. I like Tonight You're Mine as much as It Hurts Too Much. I like Sleep With Me as much as All For Love. And Inside Story is just a great little rockin' number.

I'm going to take Inside Story as my deep track. It rocks in the vein of Elton John's The Bitch Is Back or Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting!

TONIGHT YOU'RE MINE (1980)

Released Songs: It Hurts Too Much (#75), All For Love, Foolin' Myself

* Deep Track Favorite: Foolin' Myself (5 stars)

Even though it was released as a single, try finding a non-EC diehard that ever heard of it. For that reason, I am qualifying it as a Deep Track and my easy pick from the album. It seems Eric himself was never infatuated with this song but it pushes all the right buttons for me. Eric's vocals still make a tear or two form in my eyes, even after all these years. Great tune. "All For Love" would also qualify as a deep track, and is also darn good.

I had a chance to meet Eric backstage at the Dirty Dancing tour stop in New Haven…After telling him that I was a huge fan and all that stuff,  I told him that I loved Foolin’ Myself, and he told me that I had to be kidding him…It’s true, Craig-he didn’t really like that song…

Craig is kind of moving through these lp’s quickly so I need to catch up a little…I was never head over heels for the Boats album as some of you are…

It took me about a year and a half to even “get it” in the slightest bit…

I guess my favorite “hidden track” is Love Is All That Matters although “I could Take It Or Leave It…”

Not In love with Nowhere To Hide(although the “old newspaper” line is fantastic imagery…And I never listen to Runaway…

After listening to the first solo lp, I was hoping that Boats would have a rockier edge to it, so maybe that’s where my disenchantment lies…

Marathon Man is in my bottom five…But, oh, that title track…

The Change of Heart lp has one of my all time favorite b-sides…Someday is my favorite deep cut, although I was already in love with that tune when it appeared as a non-lp B-Side to She Did It…(Does anyone know why it was not included in the Boats lp?…It would have “livened” things up a bit for me…Heaven Can Wait is a close second…Too bad that didn’t’t make the cut for that movie..

Not a big fan of Desperate Fools although I play the classical overture to it as a pre wedding ceremony musical accompaniment…

ERIC CARMEN (Geffen)

Released Songs: i Wanna Hear It From Your Lips (#35), I'm Through With Love, The Way We Used To Be

* Deep Track Favorite: The Way We Used To Be (5 Stars)

Eric hits the Top 40 again with "I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips", but in my opinion, it was the two other released songs that shine. The Way We Used To Be should have been a Mega-Mega hit. It could well be my very favorite EC song. I can't help but think that someday, some other artist will discover this gem and blow the music world away with it's release.

As incredible as "Fooling' Myself" from the Tonight You're Mine album is, Eric's original piano demo is even better. Raw and powerful in a way that the polished version isn't. What a great bit of poetry set to music. Enjoy!

This is an excellent demo. Quite a well written song sung perfectly.

WINTER DREAMS

Released Songs: None that I know of

* Someone That You Loved Before (4 Stars)

It's definitely my favorite from the album, but it doesn't cross the finish line lengths ahead of it's competitors. Simply put, I like the melody and the theme of the song. Diana Ross recorded it on her "Every Day Is A New Day" album, but wasn't released as single by her either.  "Cartoon World" is probably in second place. I usually listen  to the album as whole and find some pleasure in listening to every track. Unlike every other EC album though, I just don't find anything inspiring on this one.

Agree, except for "Cartoon World"...Its, for me, up there with his great stuff on the first four solo albums. Overall a good album, but suffers via comparisons to his earlier stuff. Probably unfairly. I do think women as a whole put a lot more stock in this album than we savages do. : )

Late to the party, as I often am, my 2 cents... one "deep cut" from each of EC's LP's...

1st (Self Titled) - No Hard Feelings... as great as That's Rock & Roll is (and I can imagine it soaring up the charts as the lead single from Raspberries' 5th album...) The story Eric tells with No Hard Feelings is captured magnificently by almost 2 minutes it seems of screaming Let Me Out!!!!

BOAC - Given the total lack of appreciation the title track got when released, I want to claim it as the deep cut... however, for the sake of fairness, I'll go with the FINAL track from the album; the song that Eric has said, I believe, was to originally be the lead song before BOAC was written and caused the order of songs to be flipped... Runaway... such a great story of a young man trying to prove himself... and a very great, albeit too short, instrumental finish...

COH - I absolutely love Desperate Fools. The song is simply beautiful, however the vocals are so soft sometimes you almost lose them in the beautiful melody...

TYM - It Hurts Too Much shoulda been a hit, coulda been a hit given any decent promotion... the B side I believe, if memory serves, and the final song from the album though proved beyond a doubt Eric could still Rock... You Need Some Lovin'... From intro up to the last note just a dynamic tune!

Geffen - The song that should have been the lead single, a song that could have become an anthem for summer time and a song that battles BOAC for my favorite Eric Carmen creation... American As Apple Pie...

Winter Dreams - A lot of really good songs that might have seemed even better given how long we had waited for a new EC album, the one that I can never seem to get enough of oddly, given some of my other favorites LOL, is "Isn't It Romantic?"...

OK... now I got OTHER threads to catch up on! LOL

I like AAAP, but it's not organic, it's a little forced and has a tinny sound...it doesn't roll in a luscious way like Eric's genius melodies role. Or something like that. IMHO.

PS I think " I wanna hear it from your lips " was the perfect first single, it's got an addicting genius little melody and hook....it's pure pop....and underrated even by Eric Carmen fans.

James, you have great taste in music, but I couldn't disagree more about AAAP! I literally cannot stay in my seat during the chorus- and I can't dance!! It's PERFECT!!!

Through my 7-driver studio monitors, AAAP has no tin and rocks the house- I'm pretty sure I saw termites leaving the house as a result of the bass note line on this song:D

Careful Kirk with that dancing stuff, unlike me, who has clearly found the fountain of youth, the rest of you guys are mortal. I don't want to see you get hurt overdoing it.

And LEW......that goes for you too!....I know how excited you get when certain songs ("It's raining men")..come on the radio.

:P

My Top 5 solo deep cuts:
1.  She Remembered
2.  Someone That You Loved Before
3.  Someday
4.  Last Night
5.  Haven't We Come a Long Way

And Raspberries:
1.  I Saw the Light
2.  If You Change Your Mind
3.  Drivin' Around
4.  Crusin' Music
5.  I Reach for the Light

And I believe that among Eric's tracks that SHOULD have been released as a single because of its popular acclaim on YouTube is:  "Love Is All That Matters."
