Matthew C. Clark
Almost sounds like the late Burl Ives!!
Vinnie B Trask
It is awful. And does not sound like Roy at all. Roy Orbison could however pull this song off if he were alive and chose to do it. The track above is rubbish!
Kirk
Vinnie, I bring the good, the bad, and the ugly...for your listening pleasure, of course!
susie b
Yesterday was Roy's birthday! Here is grandson Roy 3 celebrating his grandpa's birthday a few years ago...

LC
Oh my. Points for creativity... and for trying that big ending (yes, I listened all the way through). But that’s about it. Despite the reach, it does bring up a nice fantasy performance. I hope Mr. Orbison is warming up his pipes in heaven to lay down this challenging vocal. LC
For me, the best (and only acceptable?) interpretation of this powerful song came from... Raspberries themselves: the slow version performed at concerts in 1973/74: 1
Kirk
This is such a great reading of both tunes- probably my favorite medley of all time.
Kirk
LC, listen to this slow version of Let's Pretend- the beginning of this one is probably Eric's finest vocal ever: 1
LC
I agree, Kirk. I was actually going to post this one here (great minds) but remembered the audio-only version that included "Starting Over," so I went with that one — in deference to you. :-) I wish the full vid, complete with "SO," of this live TV performance would show up on YouTube. I first heard a cassette bootleg of this slow version when I was in college in the mid-late '70s. A classmate had taped it from TV in '73 or '74 and made a copy for me after we discovered each other as maybe the only other Raspberries fans at that college.
Momof2setsoftwins
You are absolutely correct. One of his finest vocals, indeed. I love the expressions and movements of his body, and the way he closes those gorgeous eyes, while playing the piano and singing. It's as though each note and word touches his soul.
James
1. I dig the "Orbison" take of Let's Pretend. It's kind of a cross between Roy Orbison and the "Monster Mash". 2. I'd never heard that version of Let's Pretend that Kirk and LC posted of Eric singing with the Rs and solo. It is awesome!!
