Who is the biggest jerk in music?

“I’ve done quite a bit of research into this subject, being a music enthusiast and I honestly think Don Henley is one of the biggest jerks in music history.

  1. For starters, he is often considered as being the main member responsible for Don Felder’s ousting, even more so than Gleen Frey. Felder wrote about the situation in his book about his time in the Eagles.
  2. He is EXTREMELY over-protective regarding his copyright and intellectual property. You can rarely find any of the Eagle’s or his solo material on Youtube. When a video of their music gets uploaded, it’s quickly removed. He’s strict about not allowing people to take pictures or video at an Eagles concert. He also doesn’t seem to like people who play his music in public places.
  3. The worst of the worst examples of him being over-protective include the one time when he sued because of a hotel in Mexico had the name Hotel California, he also sued Duluth Trading Company because of a T-shirt contained the words “Don a Henley and “Take it Easy”, and even sued a foundation that helps protect eagles in America because he felt that they were infringing on the band’s name. He wasn’t happy about Frank Ocean sampling “Hotel California” and went as far as to call him a cuss word and attacking him despite his popularity at the time.
  4. The Eagles' shows are some of the most expensive ticket-wise, especially for a band that hasn’t released a new single in 30 years.

The reason I brought this up today is that a video of old commercials was removed and a copyright strike was issued on YouTube likely only because of Henley’s song New York Minute was used for a few seconds in a promo for a TV Show, which probably only made up 5% of the entire video.

I’ve always have liked the Eagles and Henley’s material, but Henley strikes me as a musician with ego, power and greed issues. Regarding his stance on copyright, he certainly has the right to determine how he wants his music to be heard, but in some ways, he’s probably alienating his own fans and abusing copyright law just for the sole purpose of being too greedy.”

Don Felder thought he can sing when he cant. Don was not going to let him sing Victim of Love even though Felder wrote it.

Henley probably wasn't the best bandmate or person but his voice is among  the best in rock.

Nobody dismisses their own fans more than the Van Halen brothers Eddie and Alex

I will agree with you 100% on this one, Lew, and I'm speaking from personal experience.

I was instrumental in a bit of well deserved payback for dear ol' Don when I was dating a musician whom Don greatly admired.

Bahahaha!!!!

Where's "the rest of the story"?:D

The Eagles gave Felder equal ownership in the band, and its earnings before he´d ever done a thing. The Eagles had become big with their first 2 albums. Felder played on "On the Border" (3rd album) but wasn´t officially a member, until "One of these Nights" (4th album). In effect, he was gifted a lottery win by Frey and Henley. They made the Eagles big, Felder latched on for free, in effect. I read his book, and I´m a fan of Felder´s, but come frickin on! For Felder to cry victim is insane. He received more generosity (From Frey and Henley) than than practically any human has received since the caveman. To cry victim, and to get traction is nuts.

Your are right James. Felder did improve the Eagles somewhat but Henley and Frey had every right to control the band. Felder was lucky to get in.

The answer is Mike Love. He has no competition for this honor. And I am a huge Beach Boys fan.

As always, Pretender is the voice of reason, AND he has great taste in music!!!!

Mike is the Beach Boy we all love to hate!

He is the villain, and Brian is the hero!  But, sometimes a balance like that is necessary to make great art.

This past summer, I went to see Mike Love's Beach Boys backing up Ringo Starr. Having seen the "real" (all three Wilsons) Beach Boys many times, this was actually a difficult decision, as I have always been Team Brian, but Brian encouraged fans to attend on his Facebook page, so that was good enough for me. Anyway, they were quite good, although it was kind of like watching a great bar band back up Love. They played an endless opening set and when the show was almost over, Ringo was quite unhappy as he said they were told that there was a curfew at the venue and his set would be cut short! He said "hey how about those Beach Boys? What did they play, seventy maybe eighty songs? Why not a hundred? I had a special guest who was going to join us, but I am now told he fell asleep waiting back at his hotel." (talk was Carlos Santana was in town for a show the next night and was going to join Ringo on this night, which never happened.) Radio Rumors came out that Love was the one extending the opening set and allegedly said backstage  "who wants to see a Beatle when you can see the Beach Boys?"

Oh........
