Aimee Mann "Yesterday Once More"

Matthew C. Clark

Recommended Posts

To me Karen Carpenter had the best pop voice of them all.
In this recording, Aimee Mann did Karen (and this song) strong justice, and that´s saying something.
It would be cool to see how that show works The Carpenters into the plot.

Thanks you guys,

I have been writing tribute lyrics to some of their songs for the last five weeks. Releasing them this week. Same Mike C as before.  Thought it was easier to start new one.

I wrote a tribute to a Brian Wilson song, also.

(See. New B .  Wilson Song). It's Brian Wilson's tribute to Gershwin.

Richard Carpenter has become one of my favorite arrangers. Karen had very high regards for his talent, also. Without him, not the same great songs we've heard.

Richard was always thinking about finding new songs for Karen. Even while watching movies. They both constantly worked so hard.

Sometimes, I stayed up writing and listening to some some of their songs until 2:30 to 4 am.  Over and over again, until there were the right words and iinspiration.

When I was so much younger, I remember hearing "Yesterday Once More" playing at my paternal Grandmother's house, and she, my two aunt's (one an organist and violin teacher, the other a great pianist and kindergarten teacher) loved it. Aimee Mann was spot on, note for note.:D

I sure wish there had been more understanding of anorexia nervosa in the 1970's, because there could have been much more beautiful music produced.

I need a refresher course on George and Ira Gershwin. Public school didn't teach us much about them, and neither did my two piano teachers. :(

My aunt would have a fit if she saw how our teachers send the children home laden with homework and 'employing' parents to do the teaching.

Now going to read up on the brothers Gershwin.

Say Good-bye To Love, was a song that inspired Richard to compose that song.

Before Karen died,  she had gained an incredible 30 pounds.

She was roaring back.

But,  her heart had become weakened by something she took to speed up her weight loss, over the years.

Also, if she was taking an anti-depressant, it would also affect her heart.

She collapsed in her closet.

The fire chief was also tthere after she collapsed.  And he said she looked normal.

There was still a small pulse, as they continued to try to revive her on the way to the local hospital.

The therapy was working, and at their house, Karen said she enjoyed what she had to eat.

But, her therapy needed to be much greater. Adding a growth group, with an outline to discuss every week would have been better. And to listen to people with various problems.

It seems she had an issue in accepting herself. She might have only heard a sad voice in her mind. And maybe taking something else made her always feel good, not realizing she was hurting herself.

Alternate  lyric tribute version of Something In Your Eyes. Read the tribute lyrics listening to the  song.

The lyrics are arbout Karen, our oown beloved ones, her parents,  and Richard- (They saw in both of you).

With Dusty Springfield and Richard Carpenter.

Dusty has great breath control and phrasing, coached by Richard.

Watch Richard coach Dusty throughout the song with gesture and body language as a gifted arranger.

And then see her reaction later in the song, when she knows she's got it right. And also his reaction to the song.

Then her reaction again, with both listening to the playback.

Richard's vocals overlap singers next line in the song. (Richard singing vocals as next words already begin).

Karen sings near thr end of song, also.

I substituted the words Golden Shores for streets of gold, in the song.

(Dusty):You have a newfound Fame

And Angels know your name

But now they see in you the qualities you've always had

Bridge of song:

You are living where there's no feelings of our sadness

Rescue thoughts that we have had

There's a cloud we can't see through

We'll see your grateful eyes

Your voice we'll recognize

You left a life of dreams and promise

- Now the journey's on!

Something's greater when this life is through!

God help me to write with You

- Reflecting in a mirror

Here our lives are changing

But in heaven we're renewed

Your light I'll see

Just let it shine on me

'Cause if I'm gone at dawn

I'm going to stand and walk on Golden Shores

Something your parents knew

They saw in both of you

Then someone heard a voice and made a choice, that changed your lives

Bridge of song:

Beyond our Yesterdays

Like Beginnings there's a dawn

When our thoughts are called upon,

Do our memories think of you?

- A town where you had grown

A voice still wasn't known (Wew, Wew!)

You moved from friends into a dream, that was your destiny

God help me to write these words through You!

(Karen!!!): No more shadows; Not for me!

-A Miracle!  A Wonder!

(Richard): AlI I ever wanted!!

(Karen): What's greater than the life I see?

I never thought could be

They'll see my face with gratitude and grace

-And Angels welcoming

And they'll walk the Golden Shores with me!

( Guitar solo )

(Dusty, Richard and Me):

Let me sing this song to you!!

-A Miracle has happened!

( Richard): All I ever wanted!!

(Dusty): What's stronger than a life renewed?

You've been changed through and through!

(Karen): Would eyes believe, unless they really see?

- The mirror fades away

If I could,  I'd never trade my place!

When you're here,  I know we'll feel the same

Great tribute.

There's something about modern sense of body imagery that just doesn't matter to me anymore since I met a woman with anorexia. Part of the problem is the darn media promoting thinness.

When my daughter, taller then me, 99 pounds complained about feeling cold most of the time, I told her to eat. Response:"I don't want to be a fatty."

Well I gained weight to make her, and really, after two more children, I like myself as I am. I tried losing weight once and I didn't need to! As Long as you are active you are healthy.

I accept people for their personality traits, manner and values.

BTW, where is Twiggy these days?

Now, people with her condition are treated by a medical doctor, a therapist, and a nutritionist.

During the 70's, skinny magazine covers probably influenced her. She needed more people to talk to.

A doctor could have put her on a good food plan to stay healthy, before she started on her own. And to slowly lose weight over 6 to 8 months.

Her weight gain was too fast, people have said. If she was at the hospital already, she probably would still be here.

The problem with people who eat too little over time have shrunken stomachs.

You need to build up intake gradually, your capacity increases, then you can eat normally.

Because I live in a lodging home for the time being, I turn away processed food, buy affordable supplemental shakes, and once I leave, I have all I need to know to blow the whitle on the cheap owners of lodging homes, retirement homes and long-term care facilities.

I may be hungry sometimes, but I respect my body more than fake food and potato chips. Fresh fruit, real vegetables, whole grains and real milk!

If you think you're obese, ask your family doctor.

I start writing sometimes at the chorus and I write around that. That first song had my head spinning.

Alternate tribute lyrics to You've got to love me for what I am. Chorus lyrics, only

Karen sings the verse.

(Chorus) :

You've got to love me like anyone else.

As you expect for yourseIf

When your promises are empty words,

Then your pride's still on the Shelf.

If our Fate is just  two fools in love,

With Horizons out of sight.

We're finding nothing's left, just memories.

And we both know.

(The Chorus):

We started with a newness, like each day turning into a night.

We change from what's supposed to be,

When wrongs weren't being right.

If what I waited for is only something we won't see-

It's something that we've left.

And when it's gone,

Love's moving on

We've chosen better ways,

And better ways to think and be

It's something that we've left,

And when it's gone,

Love must move on

It's nothing like before, just memories.

Love must move on.

MikeC: You have used great symbolism, imagery, emotion to the extent that if I were an English teacher I'd hire you to get my last two offspring through their fifth year of high school. Do you anything about iambic pentameter?

Poor James has nothing on you. (Just joking James).

I lost a sonnet I had written 22 years ago for my daughter in a move, so I turned to fanfiction as a hobby. The fanfiction cannot be sold because of the laws, but I was advised to write children's stories by a relative. I can't remember being in a child's world.

Hopefully somebody will offer you a well paying job writing.

I doubt Mr. Carmen would go for parodies, Carole King would find it ridiculous, David Foster might laugh his gluteal muscles off, though.

Yes, I figured we could all relate to the relationship part-of-writing. And I had my own laughs, too!

My actual writing is sort of a ping-pong experience. I don't write continually from start to finish, since it becones mostly inspiration, with no words to finish at a given moment.

And it does get confusing for me. In the first tribute, I added a chorus, thinking I had overwritten. But, it fit the tribute ( Starting at Sonething your. parents knew).  I write and end part of a complete or partial thought. But, this continues from different partially finished choruses and verses, constantly.

Yes, it becomes emotional, throughout the songs.  Wirh teary-eyed moments sometimes, during writing, seeing the story progress. And wondering how it will turn out.

One time, I stayed awake until around 5:30 am. Continuing the next night.  And speaking of emotions, the next song is definitely that type of song, later.

I put my original chorus choice at the end,  seeing the meaning or point of the song was from the first and second choruses.

James is great person. I think his influencial stlyle rubbed-off on me, in another tribute.  Not yet released. I'll read about that writing style you mentioned.

The last few weekends have been 7 and-a-half and 8 hour practice times.   Mostly just playing and learninrg songs.  And  music games.  I scored 88% and 92% on my highest vocal scores, the first practice time. Then 94, 97, 98 and 99% high scores, the second time.

I bought an accoustic and electric guitar, so far. A bass and keyboard are next.

I mentioned writing,  and a friend II've known wanted to practice. I only thought she played a few songs on guitar. It was a miraculous situation. She is a very talented. and skilled drunner. And sings a little. And she plays Jazz guitar and other music styles.
