Sousa
Hi Everyone, I joined about a week ago and jump on when I'm able, still trying to familiarize myself with the website. In the summer of '72, I was 17, just graduated from H.S. and "Go All The Way" was released; I've been a Raspberries and Eric Carmen fan since. The website is interesting and informative, I've enjoyed reading about what's going on with E.C and members opinions about music. I'm wishing you all the best of everything this Christmas season and a Happy, Healthy, New Year!! Sue 8

LC
Western NY -- my home turf! I live near Boston now but my family is back in the Rochester area. Love it over there.... it's very underrated! Welcome! Lots of nice things here, if you nose around a bit.
Sousa
I want to thank everyone for the welcome AND I'm so happy to learn we have hockey fans and a retired paralegal on board!! I'm a hockey mom and things can get pretty crazy around here during hockey season!! We had the family over for Christmas festivities, a pan of lasagna and wine...I'm still marginally comatose! I'll try to keep up. Thanks again!! Sue
Sousa
L.C. I used to commute to Rochester every day, I had a business in Henrietta and five locations in the Rochester area. I've been to the Boston area on several occasions for hockey games; are you used to the traffic yet?? Hope you get back to visit your family for the holidays. LC
Hi Sue, I went to my first two years of college in Pittsford (Nazareth) before transferring to St. Bonaventure, so I know the Henrietta area. However, my first job after college, in the early 1980s (!) was in New England, so over the past three decades (!), I have made countless trips over there. (I also spent six years in Virginia, so I drove up from there many times, too.) There's nothing like the draw of a big family.... Whenever we visit home these days, my daughters coerce me into taking them to Marketplace mall off Rt. 15. It's just like any of the malls over here, really, but when you're a teenage girl, I guess any mall is a great mall. (No chauvinism intended! :-) Anyway, I love getting over that way; we usually do Thanksgiving there, and then I try to work in trips in the early spring, summer, and fall... typically four times a year, sometimes more. PS: An aside about Nazareth: When I was there, they had tunnels connecting the dorms to the classroom buildings (probably still do). Students used to write graffiti on the walls (probably still do), and for some reason, I still remember seeing the lyrics to a song I hadn't heard up to that point: "If You Change Your Mind" (with "—Eric Carmen" underneath them). They really spoke to 17- and 18-year-olds, didn't they? A't the time, I was just digging into Raspberries, thanks in part to the fact that my older sister had bought Raspberries' first LP several years earlier, then the "I Wanna Be With You" single (I guess she couldn't afford the Fresh LP!), and then Eric's first solo album, with that battery of hits on Side 1. I loved it all, so I bought the greatest-hits LP Raspberries Best (which I think is the perfect compilation, with a killer selection and packaging that gave us all kinds of info about "the illustrious Raspberries"). But at the time I saw those EC lyrics scrawled on the tunnel wall, hadn't yet bought Fresh (or Side 3 or Starting Over). So "If You Change Your Mind" was a discovery waiting to happen. It's still a favorite, and has aged quite well, don't you think? Sorry for the ramble --- thinking about Nazareth and its tunnels reminded me of all this....
Mary Ellen
My son went to Albany Law School and I've traveled to Albany, surrounding areas and upstate N.Y. extensively myself, with family and friends. Sue, am curious about your island. ?
susie b
Looking forward to learning more about Western NY state...I know much more about the Adirondacks where I spent time with family. Dad was a goalie for St. Lawrence, so I have some Canton in my blood, too.

ter2
Hi Sue and welcome!! I don't have any connections to your neck of the woods....but, I was a hockey mom for awhile! My son started in hockey as a "mini-mite" then switched over to basketball around 5th grade, only to play JV hockey for fun as a junior in high school! His girlfriend played from childhood and was a high school varsity player - we enjoyed watching her games and wish she would've continued in college! Oh well - we all enjoy the MN Wild around here! (my son and girlfriend just got to experience 2nd row seats thanks to a gift from her boss - they enjoyed all of the social media aspects of people saying "is that you at the Wild game?" as they made it on TV a few times! ) OK ... now, I'm rambling...... Sousa
Hey Mary Ellen, I live in Grand Island, NY. We're surrounded by Buffalo, Canada and Niagara Falls, Toronto is about 90 minutes away...not when I drive ;D We've been lovin' El Nino and the unseasonably warm temperatures, but, sadly, we're getting back to normal low temperatures now. I encouraged my kids to go kayaking on December 23, it was 60 degrees! I told them that they'd probably never have that opportunity again; they had other plans. I understand that you live in New Orleans, WOW, what's that like?? I've never been to New Orleans and aside from Katrina and the Mardi Gras, I know nothing about it and I'd love to hear about it! Now, I'm rambling!! Sue
Mary Ellen
Very cool, and you do live on an actual island. Sure the area is beautiful. I know Albany is usually freezing around this time. El Niño is wreaking havoc right now, right? 80 degrees here on the 25th, and that's a record high. I'm sitting in air conditioning at the moment too. Maybe some cooler weather on the way? HA! NOLA has changed so much since Katrina. That's for better and for worse, depending on whether you are in the old guard - born here or new guard - young transplants. My family and I have been here for generations and are fine and I accept the local changes as necessary. I don't accept developers swooping in and upping rents above the national rates to make a buck. Gentrification is necessary, but safe and affordable rentals are too. Ten years after Katrina, I remember details as if they were yesterday, but have moved past that part of my personal saga. Otherwise NOLA is a beautiful, elegant, funky, fun and laid-back lifestyle overall around here. Can post some pics in the gallery for you soon. Sadly, crime is rampant and I hate that fact... M.E. ps French Quarter and Uptown were basically untouched by the hurricane and my house was ok. Damage was little or none in some places, sporadic in others. The 9th ward and Chalmette were decimated and much of it still looks like Detroit which may be more familiar to some. Much of what was seen on tv was unfortunate. Many have risen from the ashes even better than before. ? There are a few pics in my gallery photos from MG.
Sousa
It's nice that your family has been there for generations, you have history there. I hope you and your family weren't hit hard by Katrina, I'm sure it was an across the board nightmare for all. I wonder how they will gentrify New Orleans with the temporary and/or new housing that popped up, N.O. certainly has a unique and varied architectural history. It is sad to hear of the rampant crime, I'm believing for your safety in all areas. I would LOVE to see pictures, when you are able. MikeWNY
Hi Sue, I'm in Rochester--just so you know there is another "local" here on the site now and then. My sister once lived on Grand Island and she was quite afraid of the bridge(s) for several months at least! Mike

How long have you been in Rochester? We've only been on the island since 1993. Many families have been here for generations, some before the bridges were built; I think they consider us interlopers!! When we have to cross the bridges, either to Buffalo or Niagara Falls, we tell our kids we're going to the mainland...as if we live in Hawaii! Sousa
I agree, Mike. You get used to living here and forget about Niagara Falls and Canada being so close. I spoke with my cousin who had recently bought a home in New Mexico, he told me the Rio Grande is in his backyard, I thought that was so cool and then I remembered, that I'm surrounded by the Niagara River ;D By the way, if you've never been on the Maid of the Mist (the only experience in the world the word awesome should be used for), or seen the refractory lights on the falls at night, you should do so.
