Hello from Minnesota

I missed the Fleetwood Mac reunion tour that started this fall here in Minnesota. ( lots of reasons, but mainly due to my son who was in the midst of a very busy senior year soccer season - and me really not wanting to miss any of his games!). Anyway, it led me to Youtube, searching for videos from the concert, which led me to looking for videos of their 1980 concert ( -which I did make it to!). Somehow all the clicking led to more clicking and I ended up with Eric Carmen/Raspberries (not even sure anymore which one first!) Well, I am another one of those people who went "Eric Carmen was the lead singer of the Raspberries?". I almost feel stupid not knowing, but that beautiful voice, it just all made sense!

I was just a preteen when those Raspberry hits came out - but I always liked them and could of course sing right along!.  I remember being 15/16 when All by Myself came out - my friend and I decided to split a membership to the Columbia Record House - each picking 3 and then "mutually" deciding on the 7th choice.  Basically, we liked all of the same things anyway!  I know she ended up with Eric Carmen and I believe the Best of Bread. (not sure what else!)  I believe I got the Beatles Love Songs which counted as 2 choices - if I remember correctly! (and maybe Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees?). Oh, so long ago!

Well, ultimately, I ended up finding this sight - found the video "Don't Want to Say Goodbye" and had one of those "I love this song" moments! (hair raising!). Also, I have now seen the "I Can Remember" video and that song has become another favorite! I have been having great fun buying songs/albums from Itunes and making new playlists! I think it has been special because I like learning and enjoying new songs - yet these are old songs, new to me, that have that great comforting style and appeal!

This is getting wordy, but I think it is really great that this site is here - what a tribute! Many of you have a bigger connection than I ever will, and are lucky to have witnessed so much first hand! Although I'm sad I missed the reunion (by years!), I've learned about Mr. Carmen's training and accomplishments as a musician, and that there's a lot of songs I can enjoy including a new one this year! I love all of the old pictures and videos that have been shared here and on Youtube. I'm nostalgic anyway, but I will keep having these songs playing in the background so even my husband and kids will start singing along!

The closest I ever came to an "emerging band" was the Daisy Dillman Band that came to my town often from the Twin Cities - my husband and I were in college and went to see them as much as possible. They had one "hit" with "Lovin the Night Away" - never made it further in the big leagues, but still together playing music and having performances.

Thanks for letting me join in and "hello" to everyone!

Welcome aboard, Terri!  We're "neighbors"!  I'm in northern Iowa!

Anyway, your post could have been written by me!  Lol!  I was young when "Don't Want to Say Goodbye" came out, but, being a very musical person, I remembered hearing it on the radio back in the day.  I had a friend in college point out to me that the Eric I loved so much was the lead singer of the Raspberries.

Great post, Terri. I had all those same albums at the same time, and still do. That Beatles Love Songs set was a revelation. I was telling somebody (Blackhawk Pat?) that there were three or four songs on there that I didn't yet know, so diving into Love Songs was like getting half of a new album by the Fab Four. I actually pulled out the LP set  (it's never been released on CD) late last year when I finally got a turntable up and running again.

And Boz Scaggs — I was just listening to Silk Degrees on CD over the weekend. Pretty timeless record!

I like Boz Scaggs a REALLY lot, but Kris Kristofferson's former wife, the smoothly melodic Ms. Rita Coolidge wowed me with her version of "We're All Alone". . . and I slightly::::sorry:::::prefer her take on it ---

Ms. Coolidge also did a very different and wonderful cover of the energetic Jackie Wilson song "Higher and Higher".  She has such a delicious voice!!  ^_^

"We're all Alone"! Beautiful song!  I'm probably stuck on the Boz Scaggs version because that is the way I heard it first on that great Silk Degrees album!   I think I was even a little disappointed when Rita Coolidge got the top ten recognition....but of course she sings it beautifully, too. Listening to it now by Rita- very sweet.  I guess I just have to picture myself singing it to my guy instead of the other way around! ;)

I also remember having a little trouble with one of the lines.. .thought it was,  "Close the window, Carmalite"  - thought Boz was singing to a woman named Carmalite! Not sure when I figured out "calm the light". Ha!

I also did not know all of the Beatles songs on the Love Songs set - I remember really liking "Here, There and Everywhere". My teenage self was going to for sure have it played at my wedding- somehow my 23 yr self, totally forgot!

Thanks for the stories and videos LC and AnneNR!

Funny you should mention a "misheard lyrics". . . .

. . . . when the line  "Close the window, calm the light"   was sung,
. . . . I heard this:
   "Close the window, come alive"

" 'neath the waves, through the caves of hours, all's forgotten now"
. . . . was heard as "So lead the way, through the caves of vows, all's forgotten now"

Don't even ask me how that made sense, when I get the lyrics wrong like that, I figure it must mean something to the writer --- until I find out it was a strange mis-translation.  :P

Hey ter2, I thought I knew what that word meant, but it is a little more than I remembered --- (something to do with overhanging plant or tree limbs, like willow trees create their own type of "bower")

bow·er1
noun
noun: bower; plural noun: bowers
  1. 1.
a pleasant shady place under trees or climbing plants in a garden or wood.
    synonyms: arbor, pergola, grotto, alcove, sanctuary;
    "a rose-scented bower"
verb
literary
verb: bower; 3rd person present: bowers; past tense: bowered; past participle: bowered; gerund or present participle: bowering
  1. 1.
shade or enclose (a place or person).
"the bowered pathways into the tangle of vines"

Actually, "through the caves of bowers" makes more sense than "through the caves of vows" !!!  :P  Sounds more poetical, too.  ^_^

That makes me smile - maybe my 15/16 yr old self in "Creative Process" writing class had a little more vocabulary than my current self remembers!  Or that German class I took??  (German heritage here!)  Ha!  It's neat that it actually is a word describing something beautiful.
