...from the James wire:

The smart phone (on balance) is a scourge to the overall quality of life and human experience

Though the smart phone has a ton of great benefits, the fact that wherever you are these days...grocery, restaurant, coffee shop, train station etc...., a large percentage of the people are glued to their phones instead of experiencing the place, time and people with respect to where they are...this fact, (this negative) trumps all the benefits a smart phone provides.

IMHO.

Signed,

Dude who has held out from owning a smart phone  :-)

James in my humble opinion you are correct BUT, it's  NOT just the smartphone that's corrupting and busying

people's minds today. When you've lived in a BIG city like Toronto for the better part of your life, you see the

the students AND adults on the transit systems staring down at their laptop's EVERY DAY!  And the people

riding the subways are the worst. You'd think they would look up and throw a friendly smile your way, at least,

...........heck NO!..........I guess they don't care that there's a BIG world out there!.........

Thanks James. It just seems that the world is advancing too fast for man as it already is and having ALL

this technology (always) used and close at hand, I believe has also made communicating with the human

race even MORE in personal than it really (should) be!  AND.......I'll be the first to admit, when I am

home I obviously do go on the computer but, when I'm out, I sure as heck don't bring a laptop with me.

Not too also say, I don't have one of those smart phones because I do BUT that is the one and

only phone I have and going onto the internet with it just totally sucks so in saying that

I use my smartphone pretty much, just to talk!

My husband did get the new smart phone today. No waiting in line or wait list.

In reality, he will never use all the technology  that is available in this phone and he doesn't care.

Sunday, He dropped his old phone in the men's room of JFK......I didn't ask any other questions.... I just handed him a z-lock bag and hand sanitizer.

It may have been saved but ....yuck.

I think he wanted the bigger screen so he doesn't have to use his glasses.

Good for you Kirk AND........for what it's worth, I don't know or I guess,  have all the smarts to use my I-Phone

to it's full potential.....so in my case, I guess a flip phone would probably work just as good for me. Not to also mention

it would also save me a lot of frustration BUT either way, whether I am home or out, I can and do smile and see the

scenery just fine!.......... :)

My goodness, Ms. Bessiboo --  this gave me the biggest belly laugh I have had in a great long while.  I can relate to this story on several levels!  Great story.....    Thanks for posting it.

The smartphone seems to have become a bionic appendage, that frankly is destroying the human experience of socialization with other humans!  I find it extremely annoying when I'm out in a public place and all I can hear are ringtones buzzing or people who appear to be talking to themselves or people walking into me because they are looking down at their phones.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for advancement in technology, however only if it is a benefit to humans.  I don't see this device as being a benefit and may in fact be more harmful in the long run, only time will tell.

In some ways, Teresa, I do agree with you BUT I think over all "we" need to take a GOOD look at the entire

picture. Not to also say, the I phone, smartphones are also classified as a hand held, computer device. AND

does fall also into the category of electronic devices.........So.......with that said.......that is precisely WHY I also

included the fact that the world is advancing too fast for man. Heck........you don't even have to work hard like

the old fashion way when it comes to cutting your grass on your front lawn anymore! All's you have to do is start

your engine up and ride that baby........making it so much easier for us to cut our grass BUT........also NOT

realizing that the old fashion way was in fact exercise. This is making some of us over weight and unhealthy at THAT!

Not to also mention, banks and doctors office's, etc also use this technology to store ALL our personal information on

it, therefore making it a in-personal experience when we go there.......My doctor included. Nothing like having

someone stare at their computer monitor when they are talking to you about your health. So in a nutshell, for those

of you who say this is not good or healthy for "us" you are right and for those of you who say you don't really use this

technology much , please note, either way it's not just the smartphone corrupting our world... AND rather you are a user

of these devices or not, it's used on "you" rather "you" like it or not!  After all "we' live in a imperfect,  computerized world!

Here's a good test of how much the cell phones / smart phones / electronic gizmos have taken over for you --- how many of us can remember our friends and relatives phone numbers without checking said device?   I must admit with my flip phone, I remember less than half of the numbers I used to remember when there were just landlines.

  • 2 weeks later...

When I'm Cool.........(If) you were THAT person in your avatar picture you'd know exactly WHAT

kind of reaction you'd get from me!.......... BUT... since you are not, you too would get a smile from

me, unless you think something different than THAT in which you can always enlighten me!......Thanks.
