The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2014 inductees are:

Cat Stevens
Peter Gabriel

KISS
Nirvana
Linda Ronstadt

The hall is also honoring:

The late Beatles manager Brian Epstein, with a lifetime achievement award.
Former Rolling Stones manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham, with a lifetime achievement award.

I guess Jan Wenner finally gave in and KISS are in! Makes me wanna rock and roll all night. And party every day!

Always a rough topic in these parts! I feel Kiss, Hall and Oates, LInda Ronstadt, and the long overdue Brian Epstein are great additions for what they have done. Despite their limited run, I guess you can convince me of Nirvana, though not my cup of tea. They did, apparently, have a lot of influence on young bands.  Peter Gabriel never did much for me and if any "progressive music" should have been put in, I feel it should have been the band "Yes". I don't get Cat Stevens making it at all....had a few nice songs in the 70's, but then people like Jim Croce and Gilbert O'Sullivan should be in there, too, no? The group Chicago, one of the first bands to incorporate horns into rock, thus innovators, had many rock hits, many ballads, etc continues to be ignored.

A couple of years ago at a family gathering we were discussing our favorite bands, don't remeber how we got on the subject, but I was surprised to hear my father, who was 78 at the time, say that he liked KISS. He said first started listening to them when he heard their song 'Beth'. My Daddy likes KISS because of me. I have no Adelia in my actual name at all, my name is Beth. I love that man.

Shout out to Redd on this topic - Hall and Oates!! ;)

Dearest M.E.

Thanx for the shout out! I've been waiting a long, long time for Hall and Oates to get the recognition they so deserve! I know THEY have been waiting a long time as well, considering they started recording in the late 60's! ...

Can you imagine attending such a star studded event? I need to borrow your 'fainting couch' just thinking about it ;) Just renamed Cloud 9 as Cloud Hall and Oates :)

Yes Redd, I know what you mean about H and O waiting a long time to be recognized. Other artists have waited too long...

I see you swiped my "cloud ec" saying, but I won't get mad. (-;

Not a bad class, though Peter Gabriel leaves me cold, and while I love Cat Stevens' Greatest Hits album, I never got "deep" into his archive. Plus, his inclusion brings up the old argument that the Hall is misnamed --- Pop Music Hall of Fame?

I wrote that before reading BH Pat's post, and I guess I'd agree with that. Nirvana: important band, but short run.... You could say the same about Raspberries. If a "short run" isn't a deal-breaker (as it wasn't for Gale Sayers, who got into and belonged in the football Hall of Fame), then --- as I know all here would say --- Raspberries belong.

Bernie, I"m glad Kiss got in --- when I heard the news, I thought of you first. And I've always dug Hall & Oates. Good for them! (Here's hoping Daryl calls Eric to appear on Live at Daryl's House.)

I'll never get Kiss. Never been a big fan of their music, however, I will give them their due and feel they deserve their due for the influence they have had on music.

Not a fan of Nirvana either, but again their influence on a generation is undeniable.

I'm a huge fan of Hall & Oates, but their inclusion befuddles me especially when equally-deserving 'rock' acts such as Chicago, ELO, the Moody Blues, and many others, continue to be ignored.

As far as Linda goes, you need to read her book to understand how she feels about these kinds of accolades. I have to think her disclosure about her illness had something to do with the Hall finally opening their doors to her.

Marv, I understand where you stand on the different artists.  I am in agreement with the Moody Blues but many of these are personal choices.  I haven't read Linda's book but would like someone to explain to me and everyone else who doesn't know how the induction process works through the Hall.  M.E.

I am surprised that Jim Croce isn't in. What a writer and musician.

I heard Linda Ronstadt talk, on a radio interview. She sounds great, with no weakness at all to her voice.

It sounds like a normal person would sound like, to me.

Kiss is bringing Arena Football to Anaheim, California. Along with their friends, one of them said.

Hall and Oates are working on another single record.

Not saying I'm a fan of the Moodies. Just using them as an example of a long-standing group that has had an influence on music that (imo) is quite far-reaching. For that matter, I'm not a fan of Deep Purple, but the fact that they are not in, yet Kiss, Nirvana and others are in, is also a bit strange. In any case, this dicsussion rears it's head every time around this time of year, and there will never be universal consensus about who should be inducted and who have already been inducted.

The induction process is quite clear, and can be found on the Rock Hall website.

It depends on which angle you are looking at concerning influence.  I agree the process on the Hall's website is clear - as outlined in print that is.

I don't want to start a verbal war but think this article is worth reading for anyone who may be interested.  The piece is too long to paste here.  Great older pic of Hall and Oates included.

The Rock Hall is a joke. There should be a new one started up that has a clue.

Some bands need to start refusing entry for the purpose of making a point, and taking stand against the Rock Hall.

The fact Jeff Lynne/ELO are not in is all you need for proof that the Hall is putrid.

Nirvana's music does ZILCH for me, however they were part of a trend that was very influential.

Peter Gabriel is musical chameleon along the lines of David Bowie. He was and is ground-breaking and recognition is long over-due.

If you want hit records, you won't find many that had more than ELO. If you want music that was ahead of it's time, I give you the album "Eldorado." If you want a singer-songwriter-producer with a lengthy list of accomplishments, I give you Jeff Lynne. In my Rock Hall, ELO gets in years before KISS or Nirvana or some others.

The last two inductions are prime examples of the Hall starting to listen to the fans. With all due respect, no way in heck that Rush or KISS get in without the fan's input. They had been ignored for eons, and it's only because the Hall started to check the fans' votes the last two years that these two acts got voted in.
