Very Cool II

Marv,

Certainly younger people shouldn't be faulted, because not everyone who hears a version of a song will research the full background details.  Most of us are fortunate enough to have been around to hear the original song by the original Artist.

Aren't we the lucky ones! ;)

I wasn't even born yet and I knew who wrote and sang the original. My nieces are 20 and 27 and they also know it was Eric Carmen. I don't think it is age as much as it is musical exposure. I think that if you enjoy great music then you would know, at any age, that Celine Dion covered a song by Eric Carmen. If they don't then they will find out when they google All By Myself or even search it on youtube. The power of technology!

Unfortunately Google and other search engines weren't around when Celine recorded "ABM." Even this website was in its very embryonic stages.

With all due respect, I don't necessarily agree on the musical exposure comment. My children (15 1/2 and 12) have been exposed to a phenomenal amount of music in their young lives. Still when they hear one of the songs they like and I tell them that the song samples "(fill in the blank)", they are clueless to the song I'm referring to.

My son has always been exposed to a wide variety of music from classical and classic jazz to Sinatra, The Killers and all points between.  I believe that's at least partially because of my own interests and family.   He's an attorney, engineer and artist.  Likely if he has a question about music he will frequently ask me or his dad.  Technology is great but there tends to be an overload of choices and a collective short attention span.

I certainly meant we are the lucky ones to have actually heard the original artist, in this case Eric, sing the song himself and have direct knowledge of same.  It's why we are in this "Community."

FYI, almost every time I have seen a mention of "All By Myself" in print, over the past five or ten years, it has been referred to as " Eric Carmen's  "All By Myself.'" Not Celine Dion's or anyone else's. And BTW, the royalty checks still come here.

People who were of a certain age became familiar with the song in 1992 when Celine re-recorded it ( and sold 32,000,000 albums ). People who were of a certain age in 1976 were familiar with the original version. If you live in South America, you might be more familiar with Luis Miguel's "Perdoname." In other parts of the world, there have been many translations ( some good, some bad ) that have attempted to reconcile the language of that country with the melody of ABM. So far, the song has been played over 3.5 million times on domestic ( just in the USA ) radio. It's been played at least that many times in Europe and Asia. That's a good 7,000,000 plus plays, worldwide, since 1976, and counting. The last time I checked BMI's catalogue, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers, was the most performed song in their catalogue, followed by "Yesterday" by The Beatles. I think they were both somewhere in excess of 12,000,000 plays. ABM has been recorded by artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Sheryl Crow, Babes In Toyland ( one of the funniest versions I have ever heard ) Henry Mancini, Eartha Kitt, Tom Jones, Il Divo, Celine Dion and literally hundreds more, all over the world, so, in the immortal weirds of Eva Perrone, "Don't cry for me, Argentina...."

e

Eric, the correct name is EVA PERON. BTW, Argentina loves you :-)

I loved punk music as a kid and think it's cool as hell that Eric posted the BIT video. He has a reputation of being a perfectionist, but he doesn't take himself as seriously as I thought he would. (Please, cut me some slack. I'm new.) So from this Detroit girl comes much R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
