James
I live and work in Panamá.....the nation. This afternoon, at my company´s office, I heard "All By Myself" twice..... on 2 different radio stations. The first was an instrumental version and the other was Celine Dion´s....I heard both within an hour´s time. It must be great for Eric to know that 40 years after the song´s release, he is still contributing to the culture and happiness of a country so far away, and in effect to the culture and happiness of our world as a whole. Very cool!!.. James

James
I am now listening to 88.5 FM (Panamá City)....a spanish language version of "All By Myself" is playing as I type. That´s 3 (non-Eric Carmen) versions I´ve heard in just this week. 2 I´d never heard before. Pretty cool!.. James
marvin
Although the song has done very well for Eric and I'm sure he appreciates every cover version, it bothers me that there are many more people who know the song as a Celine Dion song than an Eric Carmen song.

James
88.5 FM (Panamá) plays "All By Myself" (a Spanish language version) about as much as American stations played the original version back in 1975 when the song was at the top of the charts. The artist (and team) covering the song must be making a bunch on the song given how much exposure they´re getting. I hope Eric Carmen is getting his royalties!... Mary Ellen
Hey James, Do you have a name and/or any sound clips of these people singing Eric's song? Cayenne
James
There´s not much talking on the station....I don´t think they´ve ever named the artist. I´ll listen closer next time. I tried to look for the song on youtube and through google but couldn´t find it. Good question though Cayenne. I´ll come back and post if I figure it out. Eric Carmen
FYI, almost every time I have seen a mention of "All By Myself" in print, over the past five or ten years, it has been referred to as " Eric Carmen's "All By Myself.'" Not Celine Dion's or anyone else's. And BTW, the royalty checks still come here. People who were of a certain age became familiar with the song in 1992 when Celine re-recorded it ( and sold 32,000,000 albums ). People who were of a certain age in 1976 were familiar with the original version. If you live in South America, you might be more familiar with Luis Miguel's "Perdoname." In other parts of the world, there have been many translations ( some good, some bad ) that have attempted to reconcile the language of that country with the melody of ABM. So far, the song has been played over 3.5 million times on domestic ( just in the USA ) radio. It's been played at least that many times in Europe and Asia. That's a good 7,000,000 plus plays, worldwide, since 1976, and counting. The last time I checked BMI's catalogue, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers, was the most performed song in their catalogue, followed by "Yesterday" by The Beatles. I think they were both somewhere in excess of 12,000,000 plays. ABM has been recorded by artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Sheryl Crow, Babes In Toyland ( one of the funniest versions I have ever heard ) Henry Mancini, Eartha Kitt, Tom Jones, Il Divo, Celine Dion and literally hundreds more, all over the world, so, in the immortal weirds of Eva Perrone, "Don't cry for me, Argentina...." e

Catnip
Same here Marlene. People I know always refer to Eric as the writer/singer of the song. That was a great post and it did get buried pretty quickly. I think a lot of people missed it.
Eric Carmen
Not for the faint of heart. I've got to admit, the first time I heard this I laughed until tears ran down my face. e
James
Pretty (real) funny! Though I liked the metal chords behind the song....I¨d like to hear someone do an authentic metal version. It might work. P.S. I agree with what was said above. I knew Eric´s post got buried too...and it was a real good one. It would be nice if members could be notified of Eric´s posts with the red notice things. James
redd
Eric, No, DEFINITELY not for the faint of heart! I couldn't listen to the entire song, my ears started to bleed. If am sure I heard my neighbor's dog start to howl The BIT chicks should find another song to massacre. Of all the talented people that covered ABM, this is the polar opposite. That's funny you laughed so hard when you heard this, but it just made me want to cry Sure is the most monotone version of this beautiful song we will ever experience. Many thx for posting! redd

People my age know the original song, however, I also know many who only became familiar with the song through Celine's version. That's ok. I enjoy pointing them in the right direction

stacymom2
I was old enough to know the original ABM, but young enough to know the cover by Celine. Cayenne (-: Hahaha dear c-girl, great idea! Thought maybe I was too harsh critiquing the (ahem) cover by the 'Babes', so thought I'd give it another try. marvin
The way I look at it is, quality aside, every cover is a 'good' cover if it brings attention to the original or to the artist who recorded the original. Using Celine's version as an example, I am sure that at the time I directed more than a handful of people to Eric's original. You have to remember that by the time Celine covered the song, it was already almost 20yrs old, and certainly out of the consciousness of younger music listeners. They can't be faulted for not being familiar with the original. Hey maybe some of them eventually became fans of Eric because of then becoming familiar with the original.
