Okay, Naeko...I cannot compete with Marvin's intellectual and well thought out list..Marvin and I like alot of the same stuff....Here are my favorites from the 70s...not in any particular order...I am sure I am forgetting lots, but these are standouts in my memory...

Eagles - Desperado

Eagles - Hotel California

Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run

Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Raspberries - Fresh

Raspberries - Side 3

Eric Carmen - Eric Carmen

Boston - Boston

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV

Beach Boys - Endless Summer (I know..lame because its a 60s compilation, but that 8 track was always playing in my first car as a teen...)

Never did (and still don't) get Big Star. Should. But don't.

Bernie

It was only through Raspberries that I discovered Big Star and went out and bought the records. The critics tout them as the bedrock of the Powerpop genre so I thought I was in for a real treat but............nothing! I just don't get it. September Gurls is a fine track but it was done much better by The Bangles IMHO.

For defining 70's albums I must also include:

Queen - Sheer Heart Attack and A Night at the Opera

Eric - Eric Carmen

ELO - Out of the Blue

Status Quo - Hello! and Quo.

Boston - Don't Look Back (nowhere near as good as the debut though)

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

Elton John - Caribou

The Carpenters - A Song For You

Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive!

Bread - Best of Vol 1

Led Zep - Led Zep IV and Physical Graffiti

Gary wink

THANK YOU Re: Darkness On The Edge Of Town! smart

I don't think I could put the list in order of preference, however, "Darkness" would be pretty darn near the top. I do, however, know which albums from the '70's that I played the most: "Hotel California", "What's Wrong With this Picture", and every 'berries album.

32. You’re Only Lonely - J.D.Souther

Nice, Marvin. Just for my own reference sake, I quoted your list sans comments.

Anyone who tries to bash 1970s music is totally off, as this list proves. My own list would include about two-thirds of these, subtracting Souther (which I should really listen to, just to give it a fair shake), Andrew Gold (ditto, just for his Eric contributions), Dwight Twilley (ditto again), April Wine (another ditto -- just don't know 'em well enough), Bay City Rollers (sorry, my girl Wendy!), Hollies (overrated, in my humble opinion), and Loggins & Messina (just don't find 'em that exciting).

In their place, I'd have:

* Beatles: Let It Be

* Eric: Boats Against the Current (which I'd put right at or near the top of my list) and Eric Carmen (1976)

* Lennon: Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, and Mind Games

* McCartney: Ram and Back to the Egg (oh yeah! -- underrated album) along with, as you say, Band on the Run and Venus & Mars. Heck, Red Rose Speedway, too. And Wings Over America.

* Harrison's All Things Must Pass and Bangladesh

* Ringo's Greatest Hits (c'mon... Ringo deserves some love; he had a really nice run of post-Beatles hits, and I liked all of 'em)

* Fleetwood Mac (with Landslide) and definitely Tusk

* John Stewart: Bombs Away Dream Babies ("People out there turnin' music into gold")

* ELO: Out of the Blue and On the 3rd Day along with the two you listed

* Stones: Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street

* Raspberries 1st album (for all those great ballads)

* Fotomaker: Vis-a-Vis (an underground classic -- Wal-ly! Wal-ly! Wal-ly!)

* Derek & The Dominoes: Layla (I've been listening to this a LOT lately)

* Bob Dylan: Blood on the Tracks (one of my 10 favorite albums ever)

* Elton John: Madman Across the Water (maybe his most underrated; includes "Tiny Dancer" and "Levon")

* Supertramp: Breakfast in America (another of my all-time favorites—outstanding all the way through)

* Boz: Silk Degrees (all those singles...)

* Bob Seger: Stranger in Town (ditto)

* Paul Simon: There Goes Rhymin' Simon (deserves to be on just for the line, "When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school/It's a wonder I can think at all....")

* Simon & Garfunkel: Bridge Over Troubled Water

* The Who: Who's Next

* Queen: A Night at the Opera and (just for Killer Queen) Sheer Heart Attack

Hmm... I just added 30-plus personal classics to around 25 from Marvin's list. With a little more thought, I could get it to 100.

Yeah, the '70s rocked, no question. (And what about Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zep IV, Clash's London Calling...?).

No worries, I think I’ll live. Lol

I was pretty much over that obsession anyway, by the time I was 18. There is really only one song that the BCR covered that I truly love and I would never understand someone NOT liking. And I doubt I'll have to list it. wink

LC, I love your list but I'm mystified as to why you think the Hollies are "overrated." They certainly didn't get much press during their career, and other than some hard-core fans, most people don't even pay them much attention.

Thanks, Marv -- I guess I wrote that IMHO bit based on the Hollies being in the Rock Hall of Fame. Of course, all of us can look at the artists and bands in the HOF and pick out ones that "don't belong" (and make a case for non-HOF artists that do belong), but it's just opinion. The bottom line is, I guess I've just never been a Hollies fan. Heck, you can't like everything! smile
