As Marvin's research predicted...in 2012!...50 years down the road from their genesis!..in a world dominated by RAP!..."That's Why God Made The Radio" debuts at #3 in Billboard! grin

It just goes to show that with good promotion AND a good product, even what seemed impossible can be attained.

Truth be told, it's just a great week all around for old farts, music-wise.

Neil Young's bizarre new album "Americana" (his verison of the Seeger Sessions, only all seemingly done in one take, and with most of the tunes changed 180 degrees) debuted at #4; Paul Simon's "Graceland" box at #10; and in the UK, Dexys' (reunited Dexy's Midnight Runners) "One Day I'm Going To Soar" (IMO, the best release of the bunch) also debuted at #1 (first album in 27 years).

Now, if only PIL and Bobby Womack, who also put out stellar comeback albums over the past week, could whip up some sales.......

P.S. Oh, and Alan Jackson, who's 54 or 55, debuted at #2 this week. Adele's album has now been #1 for 24 straight weeks, and counting........

I heard Mike Love of The Beach Boys, on the radio. He said that recording this new album was as if time had not passed.

'It seemed like 1965', he said. Getting together now, was just like yesterday, to him.

I remember reading Brian Wilson's post on a youtube video of his last solo album. He thanked the fans.

I wrote my own lyrics, the same week his album was released.

Ira posted it, last year.

I'll write some new words, from my original post of Brian's last solo album.

You walk on heaven's shores

And gave us colors that reach through

Look now, and you still hear your tunes

Those things you used to do;

Your way of phra-a-sing

-If there's a time like yes-ter-day

Writing words; Writing thoughts

Those things you'd always do

Now songs can reach us

As we read your verse

Each song, amazing

You could work them through

Remember Now From Then

A sound that brings a thought-

The prize is waiting when you send

From where you just begin

You played the melody

From where they came from

It seems like times of mastery

Working out each note you find

Changing chords; More words will do

As if 'Inspired' was your calling, too

I'll make the phrasing new

You help me make it through

-Remember Now From Then

From times and glories

Those lasting stories

-Remember Now From Then

Hmmmm.....seeing as Brian's last solo album was all covers of songs from Disney films.....and the one before that was covers of Gershwin tunes.......

Some words I wrote down while listening the first time to "That's Why God Made The Radio"....."lyrics are awful on "Spring Vacation", "Beaches In Mind"....gotta be Love's....surely Brian and Joe Thomas had something better!" (NOTE: Found out later that both Al and Bruce had written and sung songs that didn't make the final cut - ???) Also, how can Brian pitch so well for the Giants with that goddamn beard? - Oh, sorry, wrong Brian Wilson!.......

Mike...you and I are kindred spirits...

Brian touched me even when I was a kid and I sensed there was sadness underneath those California beach images...just as there was an unspoken sadness in my life.

Brian has ALWAYS been a symbol of survival to me.

I had to rush through those words, quickly, earlier.

That was the Gershwin song, but mostly new words. From the thread 'New B. Wilson song! '(From 7-10-10)

You're right, Ira, some of the best inspirations from Brian might, somehow, be a contrast of how he was feeling. Alot better now.

Even Eric mentioned that anyone would become a basket case, having to do so many things: Dealing with his manager , maybe time pressures from the record company; Personalities of the band at the time, etc.

GMan just gave me a great insight into Brian's music.

"Brian can inject a tone of sadness into the happiest of songs".

Listen to this tune from "That's Why God Made The Radio".

It's quickly becoming my favorite song from this miraculous age-defying album.

It seems that Joe Thomas has brought out in Brian what other collaborators have not been able to do over the last 12+ years. Joe was Brian's producer / co-writer on the "Imagination" album from 1998, and since that album Brian has been all over the musical landscape. The new album is certainly more 'pop' than previous efforts, and the songs resonate much more.

Yes, Ira...I think the real world has always been kinda scary, but the music world is so stagnant compared to the full and exciting one we all grew up in. It's nice to see "craft" back in the charts.

Once upon a time, music took us to pleasant happy places; I don't see much of that in today's stuff. What will these young people dream about when they are our age? Too bad for them.

Just saw them in Columbia, MD last night. As expected, a great show. . . .and an unexpected surprise - Bruce Johnston's intro after "Disney Girls" was greeted with a smattering of boos - due, no doubt, to his recent comment about Obama being a "socialist asshole". (If the Dixie Chicks career can go in a tailspin over a much less offensive comment about Bush, Bruce J. can at least get booed. . . .)

Funny, John O, about the second Wilson.

Ira, I should have written, 'You help me write them through'.

I tried to reduce the words that could have read, 'You help me make it through [the writing]

Geshwin's music being the inspiration for writing.

But, being able to write without his music, too.

Luckily for me, rare to be depressed.

Yeah, Matt. And there is a story that supposedly Usher wanted to record with Amy Winehouse.

Right on, Jean about comparing music now, to the past.

And what Marvin said.

I read Johnston's quote and was very disappointed. Lost a lot of respect for him for his stupid comment. Keep it to yourself, Bruce.

A)-Pet Sounds rated #2...after Sgt. Pepper in Rolling Stones' latest list of 500 Best Albums Of All-Tme.

B)-Here's Wikipedia page with some interesting info on "That's Why God Made The Radio".
