ira
Maybe it's my selective perception...But once upon a time...there was alot more response to threads about music...There were debates...contests..opinions etc.The Beach Boys have gotta be seminal to the demographic of this website...And in terms of responses to this historic reconcilliation of Brian...Mike...Bruce and Al.....Bupkis..Nada Nuttin'I guess "The Times They Are-A-Changin'". canadianchick
Ira....I wonder sometimes if people really no what they are missing...I would have given anything to be at a BB concert...everything takes time tho..booking flights, hotels, etc...so I missed out..their music is ageless and priceless and you and G were very lucky to have caught the show. Kirk
Personally, I was leaning toward, "If you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" on this one. The Beach Boys mean as much to me as most anybody, and the historical significance of this tour is not lost on me, however, the cringe factor was too high after listening to some clips of their recent appearances...I prefer to remember them as they were.I'm glad our boys were truly great for their reunion tour, although it wouldn't have mattered if they were all singing from wheelchairs- I would see any vintage of Raspberries
blackhawkpat
Ira: Thanks for posting the video of one of my favorite BB songs. I've been fortunate to see them live five or six times (my own memory fades a bit) and Brian solo three times in my life, twice with all three Wilson's on stage. I really wanted to be part of this reunion tour, but the prices for the Chicago shows are outrageous, so I won't be attending, but will probably regret it later. They are playing at the Chicago Theatre on Monday and Tuesday and frankly, the place is a dump.I've ignored any BB acts that have not included Brian over the past several years because I felt it was like seeing a bar band doing their songs. How can you see the BB's without ANY Wilson's? I was thrilled to hear that Brian was part of this reunion tour, and really wanted to go both nights, but man, it's disappointing that they want my bank account to see them (at least here). I have seen other BB fans upset on message boards regarding shows in other cities with mortgage payment ticket prices.A number of people have ripped their performance on Jimmy Fallon last week, but I thought it was terrific. Now, maybe I'm just being Keith Partridge and hearing with my eyes (Remember that old Partridge Family episode were they audition a singer who's beautiful, and Keith loves her when he sees her, but then they play him a tape and he says she's horrible?)Hey, I even dig the new song! I'm not holding them to the standard they had forty years ago. They are all at or nearing seventy. If they need some help to create the sounds, so be it, the Wondermints are possibly the greatest backing group ever. No one will ever tell me Brian is not a genius, I wish I could go, they just priced me out, but I'm glad you, Giro, and your son had the chance to see them. Sounds like you had a great time. The Beach Boys will always hold a special place in my heart and will always have a special chapter in the soundtrack of my life! marvin
I saw the BB's 2x in the 1970's with Brian, Dennis and Carl. That's the memory I will keep, even though they probably weren't a happy group physically or mentally. I finally got to see Brian's show last year, and while it was painful to see him in peformance, I was happy that he was still out there playing, and you were left in awe of the musicianship of Darian, Nelson, Scott, Jeffrey and the others in the back-up band. Nice to see that they are in this current version of the BB's back-up band, as they really carry the band vocally and musically. I do like the snippets of songs that I've heard from the new album, and I hope that it does well for them, but I won't be going to a show. JohnO
I'll be seeing them in Columbia, MD, on 6/15, and I don't particularly have high expectations for the show or the guys. From what I've heard, it's essentially still the Brian show, only with additional back catalog songs added to accommodate Al (whom I've seen with Brian), Brian J. and Mike on lead vocals. I noticed on a recent set list that they did 45 songs, about 30 of them holdovers from Brian's live shows over the past decade. While it'll be great hearing "Don't Back Down", "Disney Girls", the new song from the upcoming album and others, I could do without hearing most of the added older tunes, especially the Mike Love gems ("Be True To Your School", "Kokomo", their awful cover of "Rock & Roll Music.").I understand Jeffrey F. is still singing the falsetto parts and various Brian band members are doing the lion's share of the backing vocals....which will sound great, but, having already seen Brian & band do:(1) greatest hits shows; (2) Pet Sounds; (3) Smile; (4) That Lucky Old Sun; and (5) Gershwin shows over the past decade, not sure if I'm ready for more greatest hits shows at this point, even with the old Beach Boys......whom I saw at least 5 times in the 70s/80s, a couple of times with all 3 Wilsons.Hey, it's something to do between seeing Manitoba (ex-Dictators) in Baltimore on 6/8, then Eli Paperboy Reed and The True Loves in DC on 6/22, followed by Johnny Winter, The Derailers and Bill Kirchen at the Colonial Beach Music Fest the weekend of 6/23-24. ira
John...as you know Foskett is a miracle!...Yup it's been great to see Brian functioning...and his singing...especially on "I Guess I Just Wasn't Made For These Times"....was pretty good. When one thinks how far Brian has come...ya gotta feel good...Brian is one of the most beloved men in America..and the crowd showed it at both shows I attended.Hope you enjoy the concert...At the least...It's historic
Tony Cartmill
Ira, what is the capacity of the venues that the BBs are selling out? Or are they selling out all of them?
ira
Tony...They're selling out everywhere...But the biggest places are more like arenas...State Fairs...Universal Amphitheater type places...They're NOT big enough for stadiums...BUT ...this is pretty damn good for a group that was NEVER totally cool ala Led Zeppelin...and that hasn't had a hit since Kokomo.Still Brian's music is as much a part of Amercana as the music of Gershwin..Cole Porter...and Sinatra. ira
Brian's extremely plaintive and personal "I Guess I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" was a truly moving performance both at the Beacon in NYC ,,seen here...and at at Mohegan Sun show last week. His renaissance...though not perfect...is still a miracle IMHO! MJ
The BB were also on QVC promoting their new album - although Mike's voice sounds a little weak at times - Catch a Wave, Surfin Safari, God Only Knows, and my personal fav Wouldn't It Be Nice sounded incredible..... it's a long vid - 58 minutes but you can skip past the chat about selling and give a listen ..... Beach Boys on Qvc
