New 'Dark Shadows' Soundtrack Hits the Web: The Killers 'Go All the Way'

The band fronted by Brandon Flowers reveal on Twitter that they were approached by Tim Burton to do the cover of Raspberries' classic.

As "Dark Shadows" is getting closer to its U.S. release date on May 11, one of its soundtracks is unleashed. The song is titled "Go All the Way" and it's a cover of Raspberries' 1972 song that was recorded by The Killers.

"Our old pal Tim Burton asked us to record a cover song for his new film #DarkShadows," so the band informed their Twitter followers on how they ended up making music for the film. "It opens everywhere Friday. See you at the movies."

In addition to the song cover, a handful of classics like Donovan's "Season of the Witch", The Carpenters' "Top of the World" and Alice Cooper's "Ballad of Dwight Fry" are picked as theme songs. There's also Johnny Depp reciting Steve Miller Band's "The Joker".

To choose songs that fit the vibes of the 70s-set vampire tale, Burton says, "We just went through all the music of that year." He adds, "Doing that research reminded me of listening to all that music on AM radio over and over again."

"The quality of the music felt strange at the time, and it still feels strange, going from kind of cheesy pop to really cool hardcore stuff. It was a weird year for music. We tried to pick music that fit the era and fit the score and the vibe of the story."

For the score, Burton teams up with his longtime collaborator Danny Elfman. Their work in the movie marks for the first time ever they took inspiration from the original material. "We made a conscious decision to make no references - ever - to the originals," Elfman explained. "But here, this was different."

Anybody know why the song isn't on the soundtrack album? There are 11 tracks on it - 2 Danny Elfman instrumental pieces, a Johnny Depp reading of "The Joker", and 8 originals from '72. . . . .Nights In White Satin (Moodies), I'm Sick Of You (Iggy Pop), Season of the Witch (Donovan), Top Of The World (Carpenters), My First, My Last, etc. (Barry White), Get It On (T. Rex), No More Mr. Nice Guy (Alice C.), and Ballad of Dwight Fry (also Alice).

Wonder if Eric was approached about using the original GATW?

I've been trying to post this in the photo section and for some reaso no matter how much I resize it isn't working. So I'll post it here.

This is a screen shot of the rolling credits for Dark Shadows.

I too wish the would have used the original version. I believe they did with all the other music in there.

Wow! That is an outstanding cover.... Love it. As Randy Jackson would say, "Dawg, you did Eric Carmen proud!" Really powerful song, and it was in great hands here.

A note about it:

Also, a lot of you have probably seen this Songfacts.com page about "Go All the Way" (some good quotes, factoids, and comments in here):

Killers Cover the Raspberries’ ‘Go All the Way’
by Marc Hogan

The Killers have opened up the intriguing possibility that their upcoming album could be influenced by halcyon ’70s power pop. The Las Vegas pop-rockers covered archetypal power-poppers the Rapsberries’ 1972 “Go All the Way” for the new Tim Burton-Johnny Depp movie Dark Shadows, and as Radio 104.5 was first to point out, the track has made its way online.

For some reason the sound quality isn’t great, but you can tell it’s a relatively faithful rendition, although Brandon Flowers adds a little extra bombast as he channels Raspberries singer (and “All By Myself”/“Hungry Eyes” solo artist) Eric Carmen’s Roy Orbison-style vibrato. Considering Flowers has previously confirmed the Killers plan to release a follow-up to 2008’s Day & Age later this year, and considering the KIllers have been known to take on unexpected influences before, such as Bruce Springsteen on Sam’s Town, the rendition offers some reason to hope the band might experiment with power-pop’s muscular riffs and sweet melodies this time around.

Then again, the Raspberries cover is of a piece with the Dark Shadows soundtrack, which also includes songs by Iggy Pop and T. Rex, so more likely this is another one-off along the lines of last year’s “Cowboy Christmas Ball” or U2 cover.

But for now, you never know: They could … go … all … the … way (and, while we’re dreaming, could they please bring Canadian power-pop torch-carriers Sloan on tour with ‘em?):

This is great news indeed!! I created the Wikipedia article for GATW 3-4 years ago, and notice that it is getting 10 times as many daily hits as it did before, bumping up on 500! I'm going to edit the article and add this new info right now. And yes, NICE cover. I hope it hits the charts. What a wonderful way to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its release this summer!!

Hey I just checked out your Wiki article on GATW. I never realised that the BBC had banned it! I've always wondered why hardly anyone in the UK has heard the song. It would have been massive on Top of the Pops! So now I know. Thanks Les.

I like that The Killers stayed fairly true to the original...even including Jim's drum ending in their version. I do wish it was on the soundtrack, or at least commercially available on iTunes...maybe the band is saving it for inclusion on their next CD.

From the Dark Shadows News site:

Many news sources have picked up on The Killers' surprise contribution to the Dark Shadows soundtrack. The band produced a cover version of the Raspberries' Go All The Way heard during the film's closing credits. The track isn't included on the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack album, but may be released at a later date.

This article about the song from a few days agon in SPIN magazine by Marc Hogan says (at the end):

"But for now, you never know: They could ... go ... all ... the ... way (and, while we're dreaming, could they please bring Canadian power-pop torch-carriers Sloan on tour with 'em?)"

I think we are all dreaming.

Ok just got back from Dark Shadows - there were 10 people in the theater lol. First of all I'd like to say that Danny Elfman did a great score for it - very Bob Cobert-ish especially since he used the "mood music" in the beginning before the credits and it WAS part of the original Dark Shadows television score. I liked Helena's take on Julia Hoffman although she was more doing a take on Grayson Hall more than anyone else. Johnny did a very courtly Barnabus and in his own way added some humor for those of us who got it. Knowing that it was going to be a different storyline was a plus that way you didn't get disappointed. The thing that they did get right was the whole love-hate Barnabus - Angelique thing - I think they did it just as brilliantly than the original cast members did - but allowing for the censors back in 1966 - they couldn't give it their all lol. If you were a true DS fan you should pay homage to Tim Burton for the waves crashing scenes - I think 2 times I almost thought he found the identical place and footage that the original show had on it - did anyone else notice that? Finally I enjoyed the GATW at the end - but when I got in the car - I cranked up my CD from the Germany show they did in 1973 and blasted GATW driving home - nothing like the original to put a smile on your face.... oh and by the way.... did I tell you I am working on playing GATW on my bass? wink I think most people would enjoy this on dvd with the extras thrown in - and it was worth seeing the 5 seconds of seeing Jonathan Frid, David Selby, Lara Parker and Kathryn Leigh Scott coming in the door!!!!

Exactly!!!!!!!!!!! These too were my thoughts about the movie. It's like you asked me how I felt about it.

The only thing I would change (slightly) was the love/hate relationship with Barnabus and Angelique. I would say, LUST/hate. The sex scene was brilliant!

And I for one look forward to your GATW video!
