Paulie Mississippi
LC has set us up a fantasy NASCAR league to go with the myriad of other sports leagues we have available for us EC.COM fans and members... I believe he has emailed most of the "regular" fantasy players, but if anyone has not gotten an email and is interested in joining in the havoc fun, let us know! The league is the simplest of any sports league I've played... at some point during the week you simply select 4 drivers and you get points for their weeks work... there are three categories of drivers, you get 1 from the A group, 2 from the B group and 1 from the C group... each driver may be used a maximum of 9 times through the season... so you will not have a set roster, but can choose based on their successes on certain tracks, who's hot (not "hot" like Juan Pablo Montoya who wrecked into a jet dryer and ignited 200 gallons of jet fuel last night...), or just who you like or have a hunch about...Should be fun with a few members... So (ladies and) gentlemen... START YOUR ENGINES!!!
LC
Well said, Paulie. It does seem pretty simple compared to the day-in-day-out grind of baseball.... I did send invites to around 10 folks from here, but I know I was missing a few e-mail addresses of likely candidates, so pop a PM to Paulie --- our Director of Solicitations, er, Recruitment --- or me and we'll get you into the Raspberries Racing Group. The nice thing is, we don't have to have an even number of teams, because it's not a head-to-head thing. The first to sign up was our good friend Muzza in New Zealand, so we have an international group. Muzza & Kiwi have helped our other sports for years by randomly drawing our draft order halfway around the globe, so it's great to get Muzza into a league as an owner (and admit it --- Kiwi will be calling all the shots, right Muzza?).With Raspberries football, hockey, baseball (2), and NASCAR leagues up and running, can basketball be far behind? Golf? Fantasy Tiddlywinks?
The Kiwi Connection
You got that right Larry!!
LC
[bump]Well... anyone? We've got Muzza, Paulie, and me. It'll be fun, and it's not much of a time-sucker (like... baseball and football and hockey....:-)
december25
I will check it out. I am a NASCAR chick!
LC
Attagirl, Suzanne! I'll send you a PM with the signup info. You can actually sign in to the group, kick the tires and check things out, and stay and play... or you can just as easily remove your team. But it sounds fun -- you'll just choose eight drivers from Yahoo's A, B, and C lists, and then you'll put half in "active" spots and half in "bench" spots. Anyway, PM coming right up....Best,LC
LC
Who else...John? PaulMaul? Giro? Ringo? Mitch? Pat (no pressure)? Ladies? Somebody here likes NASCAR, no? We have three owners in our Raspberries Racing Group, and... I don't know what I'm doing so you don't have to worry about last place.... :-)
LC
Yahoo's Racing page has a great bit of guidance for those of us who aren't that into it (yet).. Leading up to every race, it looks like you can click on "Research" and see who the experts are picking for good showings. You also can see Yahoo user results in terms of which drivers are being picked to win. This will be easy, folks.So... post a note here if you want IN, and I"ll get an invitation to you.The next NASCAR event is this Sunday (3/4), so sign up quickly and pick your drivers. When I signed up, it took me around 49 seconds (I'm serious about that, Pat!) to pick my eight drivers. Now, what else can you do in 49 seconds that's as much fun? (Er, be careful in answering that question, guys. You don't wanna expose yourselves...)
Paulie Mississippi
It really is the quickest and easiest of fantasy sports to participate in. And you really don't have to be a huge fan to figure out a strategy. And if 49 seconds a week is too much for you, most of the drivers will race week in and week out, so if you miss a week, your drivers will still run; so long as they have not passed the 9 week maximum. And unlike most sports, I don't think there is a deadline to join... though the later you join, the bigger headstart you're giving us who are already in!
LC
Excellent points, Paulie. You can miss a week or two — or more — and still join. But why wait? What's 49 seconds?
blackhawkpat
I'm in! Never heard of any of these guys, but I'm in, baby! Where's Ricky Bobbie???????
angelina
Okay Larry...I'm in. I know NOTHING about NASCAR....plus what's 49 seconds between friends. Heck 49 seconds is how long my first marriage lasted! (buhahahahahahaha )Kindly resend the invite LC...thank u!
Paulie Mississippi
plus what's 49 seconds between friends. Heck 49 seconds is how long my first marriage lasted! (buhahahahahahaha ) Oh hell John, if you're like me there's other things you can do in just 49 seconds too... :yikes:
LC
Attaboy, Pat! Attaboy, John! This should be a riot. You'll find this to be 49 well-spent seconds. (Notice how 49 seconds used to seem a lot longer than it is now?) (Hee hee hee)Before you guys know it, you'll be out at Wal-Mart buying flannel shirts and those big orange stomping boots. Your next car will be a pickup truck with a dog in it and a rifle rack on the back. And you'll find yourself saying "Yeeee-haaaa!" a lot more. All because you decided to put in those 49 seconds.... :-)PS: Pat, kudos on grabbing the best team name we could possibly have: the "Drivin' Arounds." PERFECT! I hadn't even thought of that, but it's awesome. It's almost like Eric wrote the song in 1972 knowing he'd one day have a website where a racing fantasy league popped up in the 'berries' name! Now I'm thinking of changing my name to the "Cruisin' Musics" — but I've always been the Go All the Ways, so I guess I'll keep that.
Paulie Mississippi
With the burgeoning national prominence of NASCAR, another song-title that fits is "American As Apple Pie"... and if the Daytona 500 had lasted much longer, it might have gone on "All Through The Night"... I wonder if they have radios? Could we consider what they listen to as "Cruisin' Music?" When they get wrecked, are ther "No Hard Feelings"... (Oh, I could go on... and on... and on...")Really, I can't believe any of you have never heard of any of these guys, what with Dale, Jr being a pitchman for damn near everything... from Wranglers to Nationwide Insurance to Tax Slayer to Diet Mountain Dew... Carl Edwards and his affinity for Subway... Tony Stewart... Jeff Gordon... Danica Patrick (she of those very interesting "Go Daddy Dot Com" commercials... Anyway, glad to have all of you aboard... but we still need a few more just to make it interesting... Remember, if you ain't rubbin', you ain't racin'
angelina
I know some of the names but I couldn't tell you the difference between the Busch's. I DO know NASCAR has marketing down to a science! Some things I know about NASCAR:I know Brad Daugherty ( a GREAT college/pro basketball player) is a team owner and announcer.I know Jr hasn't won in a looooong time yet remains a fan fave. I know Jeff Gordon has hosted SNL, has had several hottie wives and hails from CA. Jimmy Johnson seems like a classy guy. Tony Stewart USED to be considered a hot head (all 5'6" of him ).I know Martin is kind of old and is sponsored by Viagra (or at least used to be). I know Danica Patrick is a spinner (BOOYAH!) But there are so many names I'm aware of yet don't know much about (Kenseth, Montoya,et al). Also...I know NASCAR fans are a rabid bunch of supporters with the weekend races being an EVENT for the whole family....plus I hear the stars are rather accessible.I'm looking forward to it. blackhawkpat
I guess I have heard of Danica Patrick, mostly from Super Bowl commercials. Jeff Gordon once sang the seventh inning stretch at Wrigley Field and got booed for calling it "Wrigley Park". Jimmie Johnson used to coach the Dallas Cowboys, right? This will be like throwing darts for me when picking racers, but most of you guys were good sports and played hockey this year and everyone is still in the playoff hunt there, so I feel I owe ya. Heck, I'm in a basketball league and I don't watch that EVER and I'm a half game out of first right now!So, start your engines.....right? LC
Well, Sports Illustrated readers know her from a photo shoot — a sizzling-hot (but tasteful) session in a bikini, on a car, as in this one: http://images2.fanpop.com/image/photos/1...402-666-497.jpgHow come I couldn't find her on the Yahoo list of racers this week, Paulie? Also, I didn't realize until now that the deadline for picking up a team this week was 5 a.m. today (the day of the Qualifying run). If you put in your 49 seconds and picked up a team, you can still change them from Active to Bench (or vice versa). Otherwise, you'll have to wait until next week.HOWEVER, I was able to use the so-called "Lucky Dog" feature, which means that our worst week won't count (as I understand it). All that said, it seems like it doesn't matter when you sign up. This is from Yahoo's rules:"You can join the game anytime between Tuesday, January 12, 2012, and Saturday, November 20, 2012. The game is comprised of weekly contests that begin on Monday and conclude on Sunday, unless Monday racing is required to decide a real-life race winner. The deadline to create a team for each race is 2:00 a.m. PT on the day of qualifying."So... it's not head-to-head competition, and it's not really cumulative stats. It's how many weeks you win within your group. So... sign up anytime. Send me a PM if you want in. We have an awesome group so far:* Drivin' Arounds: Blackhawk Pat * FastKiwi: Muzza * Great Expectations: Paulie Mississippi * BundleAgainstCurrent: Lew Bundles * RickyBobbyBooyahs: Booyah John * Desperate Fools: Marlene * Long Hot Days: LC (I'm giving my Go All the Ways name a rest)Suzanne, come on in! Ditto to anyone else interested! :-)
Paulie Mississippi
Danica's not listed because she's not running the Sprint Series this week, she is/was in today's Nationwide race (haven't checked her results, just got in from work...) She's only running about 10 races in the big circuit this year as she learns... but is slated to have a full ride for the Nationwide Series, which usually runs on Saturdays... (To put it in baseball terms, think of the Nationwide Series as the AAA of NASCAR) I'm guessing that the weeks she is slated to race she will be available, but I'm not sure... I do expect that if she is, she will be a "c" choice...
december25
OK Dudes. I have signed on to the site and need to get up to speed with the whole thing. I have not done one of these sites before. I see that I am too late for tomorrow's race but I will get on board for the next one. Sunday is always NASCAR day or NFL day at my parent's house. I do love it and thanks for inviting me to join. It will be interesting.

Awesome; thanks, Suzanne, and I know you'll have fun!I'm hoping Paulie and/or Muzza (or anyone else who's more into it than, say, Pat, Booyah, me...) will toss some more tidbits our way — not to tell us who to take and who to avoid among the drivers, but rather to give away a little racing background — like you did with that bit on the Nationwide races being like AAA baseball, Paulie. (I should note that Pat did a great job of that in hockey for the neophytes among us, explaining things like the plus/minus stat.) Anyway, I was listening to a broadcast today and trying to get a handle on short tracks (vs. longer ones). I found an AWESOME page with a great chart on all the tracks. Check it out:http://www.nascar.com/races/tracks/It's got the layout of all the tracks, with icons for Short, Intermediate, Superspeedway, and Road Course. There are some weird shapes that I never realized. Like, what's up with Watkins Glen? And Sonoma looks like a guitar with a bent neck.... blackhawkpat
A hearty welcome to Muzza and Suzanne for being the latest to get the fantasy sports bug at ec.com! I was hoping you'd join, Suzanne, when you were impressing me with your knowledge of auto racing on FB the other night. Paulie and Muzza are in for a challenge for the top spot with you around! In the meantime, John and I are both wondering, what happens once you turn the key in your hotrod?????????
LC
John and I are both wondering, what happens once you turn the key in your hotrod????????? Drive fast and turn left? (Sorry -- old racing joke...)Our first week is in the books. Maybe Paulie is going easy on the neophytes among us, but... look at the standings after today's race: one of our NASCAR experts is last among teams that submitted a lineup in time. (Don't worry, Lew and Suzanne -- Yahoo automatically drops our lowest totals.) Anyway, Muzza zooms off to a lead with 298 points, followed by Mr. Booyah with 286 and then the Queen of Baseball, Marlene, at 276. After that, we've got my renamed "Long Hot Days" team (234), the Drivin' Arounds, run by owner/crew chief Blackhawk Pat (193), and then, alas, Paulie's "Great Expectations" team (191).I predict each of us will watch more racing this season than we ever have. And you know what? We'll get to dig it....What I'd like to know is: Muzza, how the heck did you know Denny Hamlin would win this race? Wow! Pat, you're probably getting that "baseball" feeling, seeing Jimmie Johnson (4th-place finish, 55 laps led) sitting on your bench behind Carl Edwards (17th) — and Greg Biffle (3rd place) sitting on your bench behind Ryan Newman (21st).PS: Anyone else want to play? Pop me a PM and I'll send you an invitation.
blackhawkpat
Yeah, the bench and injuries are always my undoing no matter what sports we play! I have no clue on how these points are scored, but I have to admit, during the intermissions of today's Chicago Blackhawks versus Detroit Red Wings hockey game, I tuned in for a few minutes to watch the race that went on today.LC, I am really digging this basketball league that you and I are in with your Massachusetts buddies and I hope maybe we can try that here for next season. ALTHOUGH, I think our overall record should decide the standings, not who won the weekly series. (Still trying to figure out how I went 8-1 in week one and someone else was 7-2 and he was in first over me?????) I would be up for running that, unless you want to take the lead? You got it, my friend! You do such a great job, and I'm glad you're enjoying hoops so much. I admit that I'm getting more into basketball than I have in a long time; the last time I truly cared was in the 1980s. Seriously. And I was into it big-time --- I lived and died with the Celtics during their Big Three era (Bird, McHale, Parrish, with DJ and Danny Ainge in the backcourt). At the time, I was living in NH, and when they weren't televised, I'd drive 45 minutes to watch games in a bar that had satellite TV.Set up the scoring as you see fit. The guys that run the league we're in tend to do off-the-wall things, just for fun. You should have seen their baseball league a few years ago. They were counting every stat imaginable, including Grand Slams. It was too much. And I definitely agree with you that the way they decide standings is odd. Do it the right way.Could hoops be the sport that finally draws Cartmill into action? Or that Carmen fella? Now we'll have: baseball (2), football, hockey, basketball, and NASCAR. Pretty damned good! Should we go ahead and pursue players for Golf, Ping-Pong, and Tiddlywinks?
