ira
Craig...I just think she's a great physical comedienne as well as very very funny like Lucy...but I welcome the debate...I don't have strong feelings either way...I was just watchin' Seinfeld and thinkin' how good she is.BTW Tracy...the point about Carol Burnett is a GREAT one..she REALLY is teriffic. missm
There is only ONE Lucille Ball , Ira The closest to even touchin' her is Carol Burnett Agreed!!! JLD is funny, but Lucy was hysterical!! And then we have Carol Burnett!!
RaspBen
I totally agree Rach there is only one Lucille Ball! But along with Carol Burnett I always thought Vicki Lawrence her side kick on the Carol Burnett Show was just as hilarious they made a good pair! Paulie Mississippi
Ira... while I agree that Julia is talented, she depends much more on her supporting cast members than did Lucy; IMHO... Though who knows, had Julia been born first and been an icon in the '50's and '60's, we might be comparing Lucy to her instead...
James
While I liked Lucille Ball viscerally, I never found her funny.Carol Burnett was/is a hoot. I love her.I don't watch JL Dreyfuss much, but when I have she does seem to have it all. Very funny in a stunning (from a male's point of view) kind of way.James
Brian Mc Carthy
No denying how good Julia is, with her comedic timing abilities,However Lucille Ball is untouchable, and any comparison pales in comparison. My opinion!, my opinion! take it easy!
Guest Rachan
There's alot tied in to Lucille Ball for me...She was one of the first, if not THE first woman to do physical comedy. She took chances....she opened the door for other women to do the same. She was beautiful if you have ever seen early pictures of her. She didn't pursue being a vixen...she decided to make people laugh,& I LOVE that. She was a good business woman, when that was unheard of. She was SO good at what she did... Carol Burnett...Every saturday night at 10:00 while I was growing up. I looked forward to it. I still youtube her show. She is The best . Love her. JL Dreyfuss is great.....VERY talented. But as far as I'm concerned Lucille Ball & Carol Burnett are in a class all their own
Paulie Mississippi
James, if you've ever seen any of Lucille's early stuff... even the couple of drama's she worked on before turning to comedy... poor Julia just can't stand up to that (from that "male" point of view...) I suspect had she not turned to comedy, and depended so much on silly/slapstick; Lucy might be known for her beauty as much or more than her hijinks. ira
Tracy...You REALLY reminded me of how great Carol Burnett was!She was a damn good serious actress too...and a pretty damn good singer too.I'm finding this friendly debate to be fun.Hey what the heck...If Gilda Radner had had a longer career...Would she belong in the esteemed pantheon of great comic-actresses in your opinions? Guest Rachan
Gilda Radner was FANTASTIC!!!
Brian Mc Carthy
I have Here's Lucy on my amazon instant video collection. Her real life son& daughter were on the show! Remember that, first season was 1969
Craig Benfer
Though JLD does seem to have all the tools, I just can't place her near Lucy or Carol for that matter BUT as shows go...nothing tops Seinfeld in my book. There has never been a show that I can watch over and over again and laugh just as hard as the first time I saw it. That cast had chemistry. James
Pauli, those are great pics. You're good at finding and posting pics!..Lucille Ball was gorgeous, but even in her younger (gorgeous) days, she did nothing for me attraction wise. Looking at her early (beautiful) pics is like seeing my Mom in her younger days. I acknowledge the beauty, but have zero attraction to her.JLD, for my taste, is one of the top heaters in Hollywood. She does it for me.James
Kirk
Lucy was an original- the one and only! JLD was excellent across from Jerry...on her own, she kind of forced what came naturally on Seinfeld. There will never be another Lucy! darlene
I so agree with Ira. Lucy was unique, a rare animal. A one-of-a-kind. Her years of experience from a very young age, combined with her innate gifts, honed a comedienne like no other. She not only had the gift of comedy, she had sharply honed instincts, and they were right on. That is difficult to beat, even for Carol Burnett, who in my opinion, comes closest, but doesn't even equal Lucy. Lucy's instincts were uncanny, hence, her unparalleled success in the business at a time when women comediennes had a much more difficult row to hoe. She was not only a great comedienne, she was a pioneer. Even Carol Burnett loved her and deferred to her.Julie L-D is a fine comedienne and actress. But even she can't in my estimation compare with a timeless classic like Lucy. She doesn't have the experience, the innate instincts nor the battle scars. What she has been able to achieve, though, she and other comediennes owe to Lucy. And Lucy and Desi together were an unbeatable team. Whatever their problems, their love for each other and their partnership as soulmates in the business never waned. I miss them both.--D
angelina
I was never a big fan of the Lucy show in any incarnation, yet she was a true pioneer. Tracy and paulie said it best in terms of she being her own boss and residing in a "men's only" arena both in front of the camera and in the board room. It also took balls to for her to thumb her nose at the business and marry a Latino back then. Love conquers all. Lucille Ball was in fact a beauty/glamour model when first starting out....fascinating woman.I loved Carol Burnett's show. Like Tracy, I would look forward to her show each week....for me, she is a favorite.Gilda had too small a body of work for me to compare with the others......too young. ira
This has turned into a fun thread.Don't Shoot Me.....I'm NOT comparing her to Lucy......Carol...Gilda...or anyone...but Wendy Malick of "Just Shoot Me" and "Hot In Cleveland" ALWAYS makes me laugh. But you're all correct...Lucy pioneered the creation of the attractive female comic-actress brave enough to look foolish...and smart enough to pull it off. Paulie Mississippi
Sometimes it is about the chemistry... JLD was better with Seinfeld; though it can be said that Lucy was at her best with Desi... Even Carol Burnett; we loved the show... but her interaction with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman was a large part of that to me; as well as the interplay with guest stars. I suspect the success of Lucy's subsequent shows were due to the love fans had for her from her time on I Love Lucy... JLD has not enjoyed that type of success, though to be fair... we have many more choices to watch today whereas when Lucy was doing "Here's Luch" or "The Lucille Ball Show", you basically only had CBS, NBC, or ABC to choose from; especially for new/original programming...Wendy Malick is part of a great team on "Hot in Cleveland"... perhaps the team is greater than the sum of its parts.
