Overlooked again...

Wait — Laura Nyro is in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame? And the Raspberries aren't? Sheesh.... I know I'm incredibly biased, like most of y'all, but come on! Laura Nyro? With all due respect to her (I love "Wedding Bell Blues"), the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame isn't the place to honor her. Songwriter Hall of Fame, yes. But she was hardly influential and groundbreaking in the world of Rock'n'Roll.

Our 'berries bias aside, it's not that difficult to make a case for them to be inducted ahead of Laura Nyro (or the Beastie Boys, for that matter!). After all, being "the architects of power pop" should matter. And the endorsements of Lennon, Springsteen, Kiss, and other luminaries should matter, too.... But the sad truth is, the 'berries will never make it to the HOF, and I doubt they were ever seriously considered, right?

This institutuion was never really the "Rock" Hall. For proof, just look at some of the artists that have been inducted. There is hardly ever unanimous consensus anymore on any of the inductees, and what I think is right becomes a very subjective opinion. With all due respect, in 30 years will anyone really care about the Beasties or RHCP? Whereas 40+ years since their respective careers started, bands like the Guess Who and ELO are still played constantly on the radio. Oh well.

Regarding Laura Nyro, some of her best-known tunes were, "And When I Die" (Blood, Sweat & Tears), "Stoned Soul Picnic" (The 5th Dimension), "Stoney End" (Barbra Streisand) and as LC mentioned, "Wedding Bell Blues" (The 5th Dimension). I know that Wally is a big fan.

You're just joking around when you say "our 'berries bias" since you guys are not like relatives such as proud grandparents who might have such a bias. Raspberries' fans just know good music when they hear it!
Well, sure, we do know good great music when we hear it. But "'berries bias" wasn't really a joke, because... we are biased, aren't we? It's not a bad thing. It's just the way it is — we "adopted" them (some of us in the early 1970s, some later), and we wish more folks had caught on. Even though they'll never be inducted into the HOF (which is right in their home town!), at least we know their impact.

Re: Laura Nyro... I do like Laura Nyro, and it's sad that she died so young (at 49). But... IMHO, she doesn't belong in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. She had some good songs, but even some of her bigger hits leave me a little cold — like, "And When I Die" and "Eli's Comin'." I also don't find her voice exceptionally remarkable or anything — distinctive, but it doesn't move me all that much. I mean, she was pretty good, and she had some nice pop hits, but... I don't see her as someone who made such a profound impact on rock'n'roll music that she's in the Hall.... Especially when Raspberries, ELO, and certain others are shut out.

All of that is just my opinion, for what it's worth. I'm happy for Laura Nyro's family and fans; I know there's been a movement underfoot for a while to get her inducted....

PS: I do think the Hall should change its name to: The Popular Music Hall of Fame. Then it would make more sense to see the blues and jazz and easy-listening and hip-hop types in there.

Some live Laura Nyro:

I like the Beastie Boys, and I hate the Red Hot Chilis. But regardless of that, both bands have already been around for close to 30 years, so I think it's fair to assume these bands have stood the test of time popularity-wise.

How is it that Guns N Roses gets in and Bon Jovi and the Raspberries also once again has been overlooked. Why not White Snake, KISS ,or RUSH, over Guns N Roses? The Beastie Boys seriously? How the hell did they get in above the others I mentioned? I thought they were a one hit wonder band anyway a bunch of college boys trying to rap. How is it determined who gets in and who doesn't?

Never say never, no one knows what the future holds. IMO, they were skipped over in the past because some of the inductors worried they would be accused of bias. By the way, you had said "adopting" causes bias but I think only when you become related; lifelong fans can still make impartial choices. In your definition, even avid Beatles' fans would be considered biased.

I agree that the Rock Hall should publicize a set of criteria for induction to make it more fair, maybe include things like number of times songs are mentioned in movies or on television wink

(EC pre-Raspberries + Raspberries + EC solo) > Raspberries

The Hall outlines its criteria for induction on its site. If anyone cares, here it is:

I had seen that criteria before and still think that much of it is subjective so supporters have to start a "movement" to get their artist in. And only five to seven performers a year are inducted so many of the greats are being missed and then will be forgotten.

You've got money, you've got fame

You've got coast-to-coast acclaim (and beyond)

You've got everything

That a man could ever want

Everything

EXCEPT the Hall of Fame recognition which is well-deserved!

Clearly, what this all comes down to is whose ox is being gored. When you like a given artist, and dislike another, it will obviously influence how deserving you feel they are.

I think Rush belong, but of course I'm a big fan. On the other hand, I can't stand Kiss. While they clearly were very influential in many ways, I think they're among the worst songwriters ever to grace a record, and marginal players and singers as well.

The Beastie Boys are not remotely what you have stated, but as someone who only ever heard "Fight For Your Right," I can see how you might develop that opinion. I think "Paul's Boutique" is one of the most creative, amazing albums ever produced, but you still might hate it if you're not open to that type of music.

I think the best solution for remaining sane is to realize the whole thing is a joke and not attach any importance to it.

I agree and I am in no way saying that the bands inducted this year are not deserving but it is just not their time. We have to look at all of the bands/people that have been overlooked. Heart and others that have been around for a long time and are classics are getting counted out over Red Hot Chili Peppers...come on!! That is what gets me questioning. Not to even mention the Raspberries which are Cleveland's own phenom rock band and that has influenced countless others.
