angelina
I TOTALLY agree with ya' Marvin........"Tonight" is like a loud, testosterone-filled muscle car...while "Ecstacy" is like a sleek, stylish race car. Both "get you there" ...just in different ways.

JohnO
"Ecstasy" over "Tonight", for me, for one major reason. The latter song has always struck me as Eric's love letter to Steve Marriott, just as "I Don't Know What I Want" is to The Who. "Ecstasy" is pure Raspberries to me, distilling all of their influences, while not relying primarily on any single one of them. I've never heard or read of anyone say that "Ecstasy" sounds like anyone else.

Paulie Mississippi
John, isn't "Tonight" more an ode to Mariott than "Ecstasy"? Way back when... while reading the original liner notes for "Raspberries Best" back in the '70's... I seem to recall that conventional wisdom; maybe even the original plan.. was for Ecstacy to be the follow up to Tonight... but when Tonight failed to crack the Top 40, geniuses at Capitol suddenly went with "I'm A Rocker" as the follow up... Hindsight being what it is, we all know now that it was the wrong choice... even though I love the song... (especially from the Live On Sunset Strip CD). Maybe... maybe... if Ecstacy had been first, both songs would have been big hits.
JohnO
Marv - Grammatically speaking, the term "latter" usually refers to the last item mentioned of two. I stated that I preferred Ecstasy over Tonight, because the latter song, meaning Tonight, was Eric's love letter to Marriott. Where's the problem? RaspBen
I'll take Ectasy over Tonight one of my favs. Love those sleek race cars John, great comparison. I bet if you played Ectasy on the radio it would be a great hit even today. The Rapberries were so ahead of their time! Monica
marvin
This series of posts are good examples of how we can appreciate songs in different ways. In that sense, music can be such an incredible force. I know many people who are bewildered by my passion. Even my wife doesn't get 'it.' She enjoys music, but it doesn't flow through her bloodstream, like it does for me. A bit melodramatic, I know, but it's the best way I can describe it for me. Laura
Marvin--Glad to see you back and giving us your musical expertise. I was one of those original board members-first post Aug 20, 1997 (didn't hang out in the AOL days.) Here's to a lot more music discussions, and someday hopefully we'll have something more important music-wise to discuss!!

darlene
Ectacy or Tonight? I never could pick just one when given the choice. I'll take both. For me it's I Wanna Be With You that does it the most. The first, fast version sent me wild and the later, slow ("Hangin' With Raspberries") version drove me straight to paradise. But as for Ectacy and Tonight, love 'em both. There simply ain't no music better than Raspberries. All of it!--D

We just like to debate which is the better song. I'm with you, Dar. Hard to pick a favourite 'berries tune, but if push came to shove, mine also would be "I Wanna Be With You." darlene
Happy to hear that, Marv. And I will NEVER forget that November night in 2004 when the curtain went up and they were singing IWBWY, as I was holding your hand and Marlene's, tears pouring down my face and my heart beating out of my chest! WHOA!!! I get chills just thinking about it.My dream come true, Raspberries on the stage in front of me, and the first song out of the gate my favorite! I walked on air for months. And, when I think of it, I'm still on air.--D
Raspberrybelle
Unfortunately I didn't discover the Raspberries or Eric Carmen until after the reunion shows. I do remember putting on earphones and the cd and hearing "Don't Want To Say Goodby" for the first time. I said to my son, who was on the phone and who sent the earphones and cd to me, "Ronnie, this is so beautiful". I felt a thrill from head to toe and am still in love with that duet. MikeC
Oh, I really think there will be more music. Or a video with character voice-overs that I suggested to Wally on the Partial Raspberries thread. A friend of mine worked on a house where someone had recorded just music for some animated game video. That bought him his house, a big dining table. And I would think one dollar or probably more per video, at least. I remember seeing the last Raspberries show.I thought it might be the last one. And I remember Eric and the overdubs. The overdubs looked at Eric. Eric put down his guitar. Wally looked around and at Eric, ready to play more. Then he put his guitar down and left. And Jim stayed around after to shake hands with the fans near the stage. What class.
MikeC
Woops, I believe they all The Raspberries shook hands with some of the audience. Eric first, then everone else. It was over eight years ago, and happening fast. They all have class.
James
I never understood the whining about this site expanding into a site that accomodated more of the members' interests (photo posting, political debate etc.) This expanansion only made the site BETTER and a bigger draw for most of us.I'd rarely come onto this site if the subject matter was limited to music only. I'm sure others feel the same. But mostly why I don't understand the whining, is that the expansion of this site into other subjects (political etc.) does NOT preclude music discussions here. On the contrary, if you want to talk music, YOU CAN TALK MUSIC. Nobody is stopping you!My 2 cents.Viva Eric Carmen!..:-)James
James
P.S.I now come to this site mainly to read James' (that's me) poems. They're pretty great.:-)James
PaulMaul
But mostly why I don't understand the whining, is that the expansion of this site into other subjects (political etc.) does NOT preclude music discussions here. On the contrary, if you want to talk music, YOU CAN TALK MUSIC. Nobody is stopping you! While what you say is technically true, let me try this analogy:I set up on a street corner to give lectures on the subject of Differential Equations. Not many are interested, but I do attract a few passersby. You set up on the opposite corner and unveil a sequence of exotic dancers, each more alluring than the last. I think it's a fair bet that my audience would dwindle. The political discussion is by definition heated and passionate in ways discussion of music can't really hope to match. So I do think when Cartoon World really gets going that it can have a chilling effect on musical discussion, with potential music-related posters feeling: "What's the point? It will just be lost amidst the noise."
missm
Part of the beauty of this site is that there are so many people with so much knowledge on different subjects. It was here that I learned about the mission of the Tea Party. While I love music (and James' poems), it is not all that matters. I am a member of at least one other "music" site and all conversations seem to go the same way. "Ooh, Leon is still so fine". That, for me, gets really old after a while. I like all of the discussions that take place here and have expanded my personal library because of it!!We are all free to take part in the topics we chose and I for one am very happy that there are such a wide variety of topics and knowledge shared here!
