marvin Posted October 23, 2011 Share Posted October 23, 2011 It certainly was a wonderful two days in Cleveland - and that doesn't count my current situation, which is being stuck at Hopkins for another four hours due to plane maintenance issues. Cleveland, I luv ya, but enough already!The Cleveland visit began with going to see Jesse's band, The Robin Electric, on Friday night with Tim. We were both really impressed by the strong Pop tunes that tRE put forth, and I would totally recommend you see them if they are playing near you.On Saturday I went to the sound check, along with photographer extraordinaire, Gene Taylor. We were met in the parking lot by Wally, who was very grateful to all those who came from near and far for the show, and by Scott McCarl. It was a thrill for me to meet Scott, someone whose tunes on the "Starting Over" album, have stayed with me for a lifetime. We chatted for a long time, and he even spoke about the phone interview I did with him seven years ago. He seemed almost embarrassed by me praising his efforts, and his humbleness was very affecting.The sound check itself went on for about four hours, and the highlight for me was definitely hearing Scott sing "Play On." The core band for this show was Wally, Billy Sullivan, Rich Spina (keys), Ed Brown (drums), and Bill March (bass), and they nailed the song. Also present for some Choir songs were Dave Burke, Dan Klawon, and Ken Margolis.The show itself was filled with many highlights, including the surprise (for Wally) attendance of Lex Marchessi of Fotomaker, who played on a couple of songs. It was pure joy to see Wally getting the accolades that I believe he so richly deserves. The night was billed as "Wally Bryson and Friends", and for this night, friends all came by to pay tribute to the man and the musician.Big thanks to Kay, Wally, Billy, Scott for their hard work, and to the fans that I did get a chance to spend time with: Tim, Steve, Dave, JohnP, And JohnO.Here is the set list - and I apologize if I got some of the titles wrong to the more obscure (for me) songs:1. "With You In My Life" has become one of my favorite Raspberries songs. I left soon afterwards as I went to see Jim Bonfanti with my friend Denise.I enjoyed what I did hear and was so happy to see some of the people from the board supporting a former Raspberry. Always great to put faces to names---names to faces. The crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves.Too bad more people couldn't make it. It's not often one will get the chance to see one of the guys. Tim From Wisconsin Posted October 23, 2011 Share Posted October 23, 2011 Just got home from a fun / exhausting trip! It was great to see everyone, and it was a fantastic show! I sat for a while, but I mostly stood and walked around. The entire Ballroom was filled with smiling faces! Wally looked and sounded terrific - I was able to talk to him briefly a couple of times before the show, and even though I didn't travel the farthest, he made a point of thanking me for traveling to the show. The entire band was spot on with all of the songs - I couldn't get over how great Scott's vocals were!I know I'll have more thoughts later...I'm not sure what will come of it, but I know that Gene was there taking professional pictures and I think it was being videotaped.Tim Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I hope there will be video that will be available for us all - after all it was for a great cause to benefit kids and music! I would have loved to have heard the Fotomaker songs live! I had seven loans lined up to close on Friday and only three of them went (the others will close in November)When I first heard of this show I figured I could spend the day driving to Cleveland on Friday and then when my work scheduled filled up, I just couldn't justify it. I counted 10 Raspberries tunes...that's almost a concert in and of itself. And Wendy, I agree the remark might have been a little "uncalled for" shall we say...but it was funny and given their history, I'd say it was a good natured "poke". I actually give Wally some credit for throwing it out there and then leaving it at that. I don't remember any Sittin' Duck songs but they did play "I've got the Blues" when I seen the Ducks play out. The Ducks used to practice in my shop years ago. That was was wild when I found out who they were. All I knew is that some band wanted to use use some of the space. When I found out who it was I about sh*t myself. My hometown heroes were going to practice in my shop. Yep, I think I'll rent this building! I hope Wally does something like this again. It was a great night. I wish I would have met some of you. Ah, but see, as a audience member, given (what I have heard of) their history, it didn't seem to me it was a "good natured" poke. I don't think a talented artist needs to be poking another (extremely) talented artist at a public event. I personally can't give anyone credit for throwing uncalled comments out there.
