LobsterLvr
My wife and I are headed to Key West for a few days next week and are looking for suggestions on places to go, chill, eat, swim, and par-tay. Any thoughts??
Brian
Lucky You!!! I love it there!!! Usually it's hot & very humid when we go there....mid June,so you may have it easy! Do visit Dry Tortugas National Park ....68 miles out in the Gulf....used as a prison for Union soldiers during the Civil War....very isolated but great chance to get a tan! Also see 6-toed cats at Ernest Hemingways house on Whitehead St......nightlife is wild and crazy along Duval St.....Sloppy Joes is fun....there are tours during the day on open wagons. The shops are very different!!! Have a GREAT time!!!!
angelina
I agree with Brian.........stroll down Duval St @ night..(not unlike what you'd do strolling through Greenwich Village).......it has a unique/fun attitude..plenty of places for a fun "crawl".For some romance try Louie's Backyard (they have a nice wine/appetizer bar upstairs with a great view! Bessieboo
Here are my suggestionsRent a bike early on your trip so you can learn your way around quickly.Must see1.Mallory Square, everyday at sundown people gather to watch the sunset there will be locals, visitors, monkeys, music and street performers. 2.Sloppy Joe's to have a drink and buy a shirt3.Southernmost Point take the obligatory photo.4.Hemingway's house -yes there are plenty of six toed cats and in Key West there are chicken running wild all over the place !?5.Fort Zachary Taylor is cool and has the best beach in Key West.6. Take time to snorkel and if you can rent a boat or take charter or find a friendly local with a boat- but get out on the water. It is wonderfulThere is the Lighthouse, Custom house and Audubon house, Harry Truman's Little White House, Mel Fisher's shipwreak museum .... and many other little museums. Skip - Ripley's Believe It Or Not Look for Key West sandal factory or Kino Sandals on Fitzpatrick street for cool custom sandals. There is no or very sketchy cell phone service on the islandRestaurantsKelly's Caribbean Bar, Grill and Brewery is no longer owned by Kelly Mcgillis(Top Gun) but the food is good and the beer is as well.Hogs Breath is more touristy than it was, but is still funBlue Heaven a few blocks off of Duval try the Florida lobster and Eggs Benedict.Turtle Kraals for breakfast and lunchSarabeth's is a local favoriteFogarty's .... there is no shortage of restaurantsDon't forget to have Cuban food as well as key lime pie.El Meson De Pepe is my favorite.Bagatelle has a great wine list and nicer dinners as well as The Grand Cafe Key West is very, very causal, flip flops and shorts are fine for most places - except the fanciest restaurants. Those are island-casual attire.Don't forget sunscreen and sunglassesSlow down and Relax you are on Island timeHave fun
LobsterLvr
Wow! great! Blue Heaven sound like heaven!!Heck, I'm gonna try 'em all!!!I'll send y'all a postcard!Dave
Brian
Wow! Those were great suggestions even though I've been there a few times!! I'll keep those suggestions also!!! Also, it's more congested than you may think!
Bessieboo
A few more thoughtsThere is a great place on White or maybe Eaton for breakfast and lunch named Cole's Peace - Artisan Breads it's worth finding. For coffee skip Starbucks and have cuban coffee at the Coffee Plantation, Island Joe's Coffee or Baby's .My brother told me that cell phone service has improved but turn your phone off and relax. There are a few clothing optional bars, they have a reputation for not being tourist friendly. You will only know they don't like you when you return from the dance floor and your belongings are missing. Sometimes, they will leave your flip flops and a small towel. So, either keep your clothes on or have your wallet and keys with you.
