LC
I know a lot of you, as kids, spent hours reading about Archie, Jughead, Reggie, and "the girls" (I'd still take Betty over Veronica, as we discussed on an older thread). So you might be interested to know that a top-condition copy of the very first Archie comic book sold for (gulp) $167,300 today. It was in a Heritage Auctions sale. Here's the online press release: 1st Archie
Paulie Mississippi
I'm not really surprised... though I never thought of Archie in the same class as Superman, Batman, or Spiderman...
LC
You don't think Archie could take Batman, Paulie? Hmmm... maybe if he had Big Moose helping him. And Mr. Weatherbee.Seriously, that's a pretty hefty price.... As the Heritage rep says in the link, Archie comics have quite a ways to go before catching up to Super- and Batman, but this price is some $50K over the highest Spiderman and Hulk comics they've sold. I just thought it was pretty interesting, though auction prices aren't often "surprising," especially if an item is in really top condition. Paulie Mississippi
As I recall, Archie had a "cross over" with "The Punisher"... THEY could take Batman...
blackhawkpat
Yeah, but think of the hot fight scenes between Veronica and Batgirl...umm, wait, did that just come out? Where's the delete button?

PaulMaul
I've been an Archie fan since I was about 10 years old. Over the years I amassed hundreds of the Archie "digest" collections. Since the stories from the '40's through the '70's are uncredited, I never knew who the creators were. However, in my opinion, three artistic giants are almost entirely responsible for all the quality Archie output from the '50's through the '70's: Harry Lucey on Archie, Samm Schwartz on Jughead and Dan DeCarlo on Betty and Veronica.Lucey in particular is my favorite. He sure had a way of drawing those girls!
LC
Paul, thank you for that.... I never knew the names of the artists, but it's interesting — there are subtle (and not-so-subtle) depictions of the gang through the years. Now you've got me wanting to find some old comic books for a breezy read....PS: So... were you the winning bidder in that Heritage sale? --Larry
