Music our parents gave us...

Here's the reverse. A genius Don McClean song covered by another artist, Perry Como. Perry's version is better than Don's...and Don's is great. Oh, and my Mom loved Perry Como.

I've posted this before here, it's in my top 5 of alltime, so great:

James, great version of a great song. Thank you! I love Perry Como -- another one of my parents' favorites. They used to play an 8-track of his with the song "Seattle" all the time:

And Lori, this isn't yodeling at all, but your comments about yodeling made me think of it.... Who remembers his or her dad belting this one out?

What music are we giving our kids?

I'm giving my kids 4 years of college 100% paid for out of my pocket. They can get their own music!!! haha

My dad was the music man in the family - they listened to Elvis, Herb Alpert amongst the Beatles and others (my dad I think was 34 or 35 when I was born). My dad's 4 favorite songs in the "pop rock" generation were Sally Go Round the Roses, Dancing in the Streets and Words of Love by Cass Eliott and Sway by Bobby Rydell lol. His harder edge was Led Zeppelin - found he had stolen my Physical Grafitti album and was playing Kashmir and Boogie with Stu until they skipped lol. He also loved the theme from The Killing Fields. On the bad side - they loved to sing Barbership songs at the dinner table every holiday dinner - the entire family harmonizing - and my one cousin was tone deaf big time lol. So with my dad bringing in his contributions. Oh and we listened to a lot of Benny Goodman - Sing Sing Sing, and a lot of other 40's tunes like Dardinella, Stompin at the Savoy - and of course, the perrineal standard tune - Red River Valley ahahahahha. My brother was the big influence in terms of 60's music - he had the 4000 plus 45 collection wink

This was a really fun and moving thread, and I found it worth revisiting (or, if you missed it, reading for the first time).

In the thread-starter, I highlighted some of the artists I still love just because my parents played 'em on the stereo at home or on the cassette player in the car. (I'm happy to report my parents are still doing okay and I've been over to visit them, with my daughters, a few times this year (six-hour drive) and will be taking a couple more trips before year-end. Having just lost a friend, at age 67, in a baseball fantasy league I've been in since 1992, I'm very appreciative that my folks are hanging in there.)

Anyway, in reviewing this thread, I see a lot of the videos have been "unplugged," but at least the songs are mentioned in most cases. I'll add one, another that both of my folks liked (and still do):

I'm very much stuck on Mr. Alpert's wife, Lani Hall, and the group she was in, Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 as well.  I cannot remember a time where the radio was not on whenever we were in the car, and a lot of times in the house, too.  My mom listened to a whole lot of different music, changing radio stations frequently to hear all the current stuff being played.

A bump for a nostalgic old thread filled with music we inherited. If you go through the three pages, you'll find some treasured old songs that mean something to past and present posters here.

Here's another from me: Dean Martin's "I Take a Lot of Pride in What I Am." This was the title song of an an 8-track tape my dad frequently played in the car. I love this (muddy) old video of Dino doing a walking lip-sync:

My Dad was not a music guy, but every Christmas Eve, per his lead, as kids we listened to the Vienna Choir Boys. We always kept in some touch with our German heritage, even though we´re 4th generation on both sides.

I since have bought a bunch of the Vienna Choir Boys´ music. Hard to beat their sound and performances. Great music for the soul.

P.S. LOVE that Dean Martin song, LC. Had never heard it. Your Dad has good taste.

My dad couldn't have cared less about music. When I caught the music bug, I remembered seeing some of my mom's records in a cabinet. Strangely they were all albums, except for one 45. That 45, by Carl Mann and two other songs listed below, were favorites. The Everly Brothers remain as one of my most beloved bands of that era.
