ira
I did a similar thread a while back...but as I was listening to Kool And The Gang's "Celebration"...I was reminded of the following...I DON"T LIKE THAT SONG!Now..I consider myself a VERY pensive guy...I realize that taste is subjective.I truly understand why certain songs AND Top 10 hits were hits...BUT sometimes..I just don't like them...Do they bring back bad memories?..Is it that I don't like that genre?..who knows?I'd like to hear from you guys about "Smash Records" and HUGE groups you don't like. One ground rule..if I may...Don't Bash Eachother!!!If these songs were smashes...and/or these groups were huge...then probably there's talent there.I'll start..Fleetwood Mac leaves me cold....I don't understand Led Zeppelin...and Rap...As Howard Stern said brilliantly years ago...Rap is "like a novelty song that somehow lasted for 25 years"...(and is still goin'.)What songs or groups may be professionally excellent...but just don't appeal to you? Guest Fresh
Ira, you are a great guy, and a true music lover, but Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin have made some great records. Maybe you haven't listened to them closely. As far as Rap, well, I think they spelled it incorrectly...they left off the "c"! My all time favorite song to hate:You Light Up My Life - Debbie Boone Never fails to bring me to the brink of wretching!
hollies65
Agree, almost ANY Lindsey Buckingham song is at least good.
Guest Fresh
Led Zep's "In Through the Out Door" is timeless. I play it through at least once a month.

ira
Guys...Like I said...taste is individual...I recognize the craft and skill of many groups that don't move me...(BTW...I like Buckingham's stuff the best by far when listening to Fleetwood Mac...(See "Go Your Own Way" and "Second Hand News")...But aqain...what are some known iconic songs and groups that y'all don't dig so much..."just because"...no explanation needed. darlene
I was a big Led Zep fan. You're talking to a girl who played the organ part to "Stairway to Heaven" with Megaton. I love some of Led Zeppelin. And some of Fleetwood Mac. Herman adores Stevie Nicks, well, I'm sure not totally for her musical talent. LOLI agree about Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life." Yucky.Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey" is way over the top too. I just hate James Brown's "Hot Pants." He just keeps saying "Hot Pants--SMOKIN'" over and over. Yuck! I'll have to think of some more.Oh, one more. Maureen McGovern had a song out called "Darlene." I thought it would be a nice ballad. WRONG! This poor girl does everything wrong, invites guy after guy over for ONE night to her apartment and the chorus goes like, "Whatcha gonna do, Darlene?" YUCKY!--D
ira
Darlene...For me too...James Brown is a GREAT example...His talent is unquestionable...I just don't dig his music.

LobsterLvr
Brandy is the most overplayed song in the world. There's a station here in Jersey (NJ101.5) that plays it so often that I can't listen to the station any more. "there's a port...." AAAAhhhhhhhh!!! darlene
I think Brandy's a fine girl too. And Looking Glass was at Rutgers University when they recorded that, weren't they?I just love the song. Every time I hear it, no matter HOW many times I hear it. Sorry. I also love his voice. It reminds me of one of my students in Roanoke, Illinois the very first year I taught, in my boys chorus. He had a great voice. He was cute too, but I wasn' t supposed to notice, even though he was 18 and I was 20 because I was his teacher. Anyway, just love Brandy. Sorry, guys. It's a great tune.--D
blackhawkpat
That's what makes this place so great. We can all agree to disagree on other music, maybe occassionally turn each other on to some new stuff along the way, but Eric and Raspberries music brings us all together. Now, me, nobody can tell me that "You Light Up My Life" is a bad song. LOVE Debby Boone and always have since day one. Joe Brooks was a great songwriter (before his recent flip out) and orchestrator and how many songs do you hear in 3/4 time on the radio? I feel she is one of the most underrated singers of all time and because of that song's immense popularity, people unfairly never gave her a second chance in the pop world(though she had some big hits in the country field years later and won some Dove awards for Christian music afterwards). I wince every time I see a thread like this because I know that song is always gonna get mentioned."Celebration" is another song that always makes me chuckle at it's mention. Everyone I know says they hate it, but when I was really young, I used to do that song in a band and people would always groan or roll their eyes when we would do it.....AS THEY WOULD BE WALKING TO PACK THE DANCE FLOOR! As a song, I think it's good, but I don't listen to it in my Itunes....though it's in there!"Brandy" is a song that I think was very good for it's time period, but it sounds dated to me. If I hear it on the radio, I'll leave it on, though! I like their follow, too, "Jimmy Love Maryanne", which we used to sing, "Jimmy loves Maryanne, cos Jimmy thinks she's a man!" LOL (Hey, I was a kid, okay?)Can't think of any songs that I really HATE, though, that hit Top ten. I certainly love James Brown, but I always flip "I Feel Good" off when it comes on. Heard that one enough! Maybe "The Night Chicago Died" or "Seasons In The Sun" (though I had the Terry Jacks album when it came out!)? Guest RACHAN
darleneEverytime I hear the song "Brandy" it reminds me of the summer at the pool with my big.... sister ,who has since passed.Going to the snack bar & being afraid to order for myself..so she would take care of me.I don't care if it's a feeble song..It has cherished memories for me ..Music is almost magical in the way it can take you back to a specific moment in your life
hollies65
Brandy is not feeble...it's a great pop song, sung by a guy with a GREAT voice! Listen with pride.
