elle4ec
Here is arguably the best song ever recorded by Eric. Enjoy!!Phil You'll get no argument from me, Phil! Boats Against the Current is as close to perfection as I've ever seen!Didn't andiemay do a fantastic job on compiling this video for me?! Speaking of the song, see Duane's post titled, "The Great Gatsby may be 3D" in the "That's Rock and Roll forum...
hollies65
I'd place "Ectasy", "Go All The Way", "Overnight Sensation", "Tonight", "I Wanna Be With You", "My Girl" "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again", in front of it.
Early Wynn
It's my favorite song from his solo career.
The Stig
I agree with Hollies on...Ectasy", "Go All The Way", "Overnight Sensation", "Tonight", and would add If You Change Your Mind...Runaway is my favorite Solo song by Eric
Duane
I agree with Hollies on...Ectasy", "Go All The Way", "Overnight Sensation", "Tonight", and would add If You Change Your Mind...I won't argue with you Berrie-pickers, to each his own and you're entitled to your opinion...even if it's wrong!! I really like those songs, BUT...I'd probably list 10 to 15 of EC's solo songs before I got to my first Raspberrie song (and that would be "Let's Pretend" followed by "Overnight Sensation"). To me (again, this is just my opinion), Eric didn't really hit his stride as a songwriter until his solo career...like anything, you get better at something the longer you do it. Duane
Runaway is my favorite Solo song by Eric That's an interesting statement, Stig. Runaway doesn't get mentioned a lot.Boats has always been my favorite song but I LOVE Runaway...there's times I think it's EC's best song...I find the song so peaceful to listen to...I've said before that it's the shortest 8 minute song ever...I'm always amazed how fast 8 minutes passes when I listen to it. It could never be a single and I wouldn't want a second of it cut to make it one.
The Stig
Hey DuaneIts probably my favorite of all time if I had to pick one favorite that would be it.. Im not totally wrong ha!I like the guitar stuff on the tunes I/Hollies picked, thats why Im a berrie picker as you called me hahah. Beatles, Badfinger, Raspberries is why I played in bands when I was younger.Just like that guitar sound...
Duane
Im not totally wrong ha! Hey buddy, I'm just messing with you. You're here so you obviously have great taste in music and you can't be wrong with EC music...from any stage of his career! In my opinion, a lot of the Raspberrie songs were uneven after great starts. But I gotta give the man credit, he wrote some GREAT intros during that time...some of the best ever written...I fully understand you Berrie pickers!! PaulMaul
I know I'm in a very small minority here, but the "Boats" LP overall is far down on my EC list, and the title track is not even close to my favorite from that album. I much prefer the first solo LP and the bulk of the Raspberries EC songs. If I compiled my favorite EC song list I don't think "Boats" would crack the top 20. James
"Boats..." the song is some days my favorite song of alltime. Maybe most days. I think those of us that love piano based music ala Elton John's "Tonight", "We All Fall In Love Sometimes/Curtains", "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", or Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" (long version)...& other stuff like that - those of us that like that type of music appreciate "Boats..." (the song) as the masterpiece of pop music that it is.The album is also probably my favorite album of all the albums I own.P.S. Paul - you've committed blasphemy - you're banned for life. Though I will propose a quick parole for good behavior (you love RUSH).:-)
missm
James your Elton John analogy rings true!! It is exactly why I love Boats!
LC
Phil, nice thread — any Boats thread is a nice one! My 2 cents: With certain songwriters, you almost have to organize their work into ballads and rock'n'roll numbers (and maybe mid-tempo, too), and then choose a "best" in each category. To me, "Boats Against the Current" is certainly Eric's finest moment as a songwriter; the lyric and melody are as good as it gets, and it's got a passion and an honesty and an "aura" that make it perfect. (PaulMaul, you have catch yourself in the right mood, turn off the lights, put the headphones on, and let it soak it in. You'll get it.) Yet I can also make a case for "Go All the Way" as his best. Or "Overnight Sensation," or "Tonight." But it's like comparing apples and oranges. With a versatile writer or writing team — a Lennon & McCartney, Brian Wilson, Jagger/Richard, Springsteen — you kind of have to split the archive into a couple different categories. All that said, in a pinch I'd go with "Boats" at the top of Eric's songs....
marathon mama
. . . Runaway is my favorite Solo song by Eric One of my favorites too. I was re-reading Bernie's August 2007 post on the "Boats" blog where Eric says that Runaway was his original choice for the "Boat's" album's starter: "...It tracked my life from 1967 (the year I graduated from high school).."I love the music, but I am entranced by the lyrics of this song: She was just an average blue-eyed golden high school dreamAn illusion nothing real could ever touchFunny love seemed so much more intense at seventeenWhen I knew she'd never love me half as muchI recall the desperate vow I made, I must find a way somehow to win her heart.I've got to make her mine.Gonna run awaaay, till I prove that I'm a man.Gonna run awaaay, be the best I know I can.Got to run awaaay, got to find my space and ti-imeAnd I cannot rest a day until I make her mine.Trades were made for promises of a timeless memoryAnd I knew but still refused to comprehend. The fantasy more glamorous then she could ever beWas the course of least resistance in the end.I recall the desperate vow I made, I must find a way somehow to win her heart.I've got to make her mine.Gonna run awaaay, till I prove that I'm a man.Gonna run awaaay, be the best I know I can.Got to run awaaay, got to find my space and ti-imeAnd I cannot rest a day until I make her mine.Long ago an innocence lived deep within my soul In a yesterday where love and dreams remainBut disillusion clouds my eyes and the winter takes it's tollFor the spring has gone and will not come again.I recall the desperate vow I made, I must find a way somehow to win her heart.I've got to make her mineGonna run awaaay, till I prove that I'm a man.Gonna run awaaay, be the best I know I can.Got to run awaaay, got to find my space and ti-imeAnd I cannot rest a day until I make her mineOhhh, got to run awaaay, got to find my space and ti-imeAnd I cannot rest a day until I make her mine. elle4ec
Runaway is a absolute spectacular song, MM! You and I must be thinking alike. Ever since I read this thread...I can't get the song off of my mind.I feel as if the perfect combination of music and lyrics seem to possess almost hypnotic qualities.Runaway was the last thing I listened to last night before I went to bed.And the sound of the enchanting song still echoed in my head this morning when I awoke. Thanks for posting the lyrics, MM! darlene
Did Andiemay do this? I love it! Brian Mc Carthy
I echoe Darlene's words, AND may i also say that it is without a single doubt, the most underrated song of all-time. A GEM from start to finish. The song has a surge of emotions that reach deep into one's heart and soul AND i thank you eternally Mr Carmen..... Love it!--D Yes, Darlene, andiemay made this wonderful video in June of 2009!After I saw what a fantastic job she did on her Foolin' Myself video, I asked Andie if she might consider making a video for my all-time favorite song of Eric's, Boats Against The Current. I explained to her the only videos available on YouTube at that time, were videos of BATC with the background vocals. Personally, I think the original version with just Eric's voice, is far superior to the version with background vocals. I went on to ask if she could include photos of Natalie Wood in the video, as she is my most-loved actress from the past. I also asked if she might include my favorite quote at the end of the video from Natalie, in Splendor In The Grass.I'm forever grateful to Andie for her generosity in producing such a wonderful video, for all of us Boats lovers! Here's andiemay's Foolin' Myself video for those who aren't familiar with andie's talents:
Wendy-Ann
"I think those of us that love piano based music ala Elton John's "Tonight", "We All Fall In Love Sometimes/Curtains", "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", or Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" (long version)...& other stuff like that - those of us that like that type of music appreciate "Boats..." And that goes double for the long version of "All By Myself."But, oh no...I'm with PaulMaul. Not that I don't love, love, love "Boats..." I do! It's just that some of the other songs for me top "Boats..." in my book. Not that it isn't a masterpiece as you've stated, James. It is. Hands down.I think I can go with Larry and the apples and oranges comparison. If I take all the songs I like more than "Boats...", I suppose they wouldn't be in the same "masterpiece" category like "Boats...". Not saying others aren't masterpieces in other types of "masterpiece" categories. It's just that I'd play them before "Boats..."---however, there are many songs I'd play AFTER I'd play "Boats..."Ummmm....Don't know where I'm going with this except I feel like I'm trying to dig myself out of a hole I dug ---- all by myself. PS: See...I'm REALLY TRYING to participate more in the music threads instead of throwing out sexual innuedos and lusting after photos in the "The Way We Used To Be" section, but I fear I suck at it! lol
Raspbernie
My favorite song of ALL TIME. It's what made Eric "special" to me. Without it, I wouldn't have:So fervently followed his career...Discovered that he was in a band before going solo...Started this website...Helped create an ardent fan base...Met so many friends who share my passion...Wrote his biography...Inspired his former band to reunite...Be sitting here typing this Message.Eric couldn't have known that night he woke up with this song in his head would stir my soul, change my life and have an impact on me that would be everlasting...But it did. Thank you, Eric!Bernie

Brian Mc Carthy
THE entire album itself, is a masterpiece. IT is so prolific in every aspect of musicianship, and could easily be turned into a broadway production, AND just with that one albun! as opposed to an entire catalog that is usally the standard to bring any particular artist material to the broadway stage.
