PaulMaul
I haven't had much of a chance to listen yet, but I did pop in "Out of the Blue" because I LOVE "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and wanted to listen to it a few times. It made me think of EC's definition of a good song. By that standard, this probably isn't one, as I can't imagine that if I strummed the chords on an acoustic guitar and sang the song, that anyone would be terribly impressed. What's great about this song is the meticulous orchestral arrangement and the flawlessly executed vocal harmonies. So I guess it can be great to listen to a great song, or it can be great to listen to a great arrangement of an OK song. Either way (to quote Tony the Tiger), it's GGGRRREEEAAATTT!!!!!
Laura
I think Out of the Blue was my favorite ELO album. I also have the Box set that has a nice general representation on it. The other 2 songs I like are Calling America, and So Serious.
LC
Excellent point, Paul. And now I have to hear it again.... (this sounds like the recorded version set to video footage):
Craig Benfer
Have you had time to listen to all the CD's and form an early opinion?

Jeff
Anyone remember the "Spaceship" they used on tour in 1979?One of my first concerts ever and it was one of the best stage "props" ever! Interestingly enough, the "spaceship" is actually based on the matching speaker to the Wurlitzer 1015 "bubble" jukebox, from 1945. I have both the jukebox, and the speaker and, the speaker is very rare - worth more than the actual jukebox. I found it in Italy, at an Antique show, and thought " that's the ELO ship!!" anyway, this is a picture of it (need to hang it in its new room). I've only seen one other, and a couple on E-Bay over the years, but always all broken, or reproductions. This one is original.http://db.tt/ol1KJG8

LC
The eagle has landed...all 5 ELO CD's are on my dining room table. Will probably have to wait days for an opportunity to listen, but I did already devour the liner notes from "Third Day".... PaulMaul,So... does the absence of a review from you mean that maybe those five ELO CDs you bought are a little "less than they could be"? (That was a Seinfield reference.) PaulMaul
PaulMaul,So... does the absence of a review from you mean that maybe those five ELO CDs you bought are a little "less than they could be"? (That was a Seinfield reference.)Hah! No, the truth is it takes me a long time to process new music. I put "Third Day" in my car and I've been slowly listening to it. There are a few tracks I liked on the first couple of listens ("Oh No Not Susan") but I usually need to listen to the whole album at least 5 or 6 times before I really like anything. The same thing happened to me with the first EC solo album. It's now one of my all-time favorites, but still the first couple of times through I had to force myself to listen, because it's so much easier to listen to the familiar.I'll get to all of them eventually. Not sure whether ELO will ever be among my all-time faves as a band, but I'll give them a chance!
LC
Paging PaulMaul.... So it's been three years. Are you an ELO convert, or did you dump the discs you bought in a yard sale? :-) --LC
James
This 5 1/2 minutes or so captures the twin pillars of ELO´s (Jeff Lynn´s) genius: Orchestral music ("Eldorado Overture") fused into a perfect poignant melody ("Can´t Get It Ouf of My Head"). Cool concert footage from before they hit it big. So great:

LC
Wow -- great find, James. I'd never seen that. Great clip and great song (and maybe the last time Jeff Lynne didn't wear sunglasses?). Love it.
LC
Now, Kirk, which video did you post? It's already been removed by the user.... :-(
Kirk
LC- the concert at Hyde Park in 2014- I guess it's the first 'Jeff Lynne ELO' concert in 28 years- fabulous!
James
I watched about 10 minutes of your clip Kirk. They were sounding great. A friend of mine had sent me the same thing a month or 2 ago. When I watched it then I remember Jeff Lynn effusively saying how much fun he was having, how great it was to be back with ELO .... and I think they indicated they might go ahead and tour the world.
