Strange 'Berries Sightings

I was at a mall over the weekend, and I heard it: "Go All the Way." It was playing over the sound system. I had one of those moments where you instantly recognize a favorite all-time song, but it takes a moment for the artist to register — because you're actually shocked that the song is coming from somewhere other than your own CD player, iPod, or, yes, turntable (8-track player?). Let's face it — we don't hear 'em much on the radio or over public sound systems, so it's a kick when it happens. And you can't help but smile: somebody was playing the 'berries.

Back in 1972, shopping malls weren't what they are now — huge buildings just teeming with teenage girls dressed in slinky outfits and shopping for even slinkier ones.

When you consider that Eric wrote "Go All the Way" to try and slip a fast one past the censorship police, you have to admit that a shopping mall c. 2011 is a perfect audience for that song. (Well, as long as our daughters aren't among the audience. In that case, censor away! )

Any strange places, stations, or situations you've been surprised by a Rasberries song in recent weeks or months?

Not really strange, but today I heard "Come Around And See Me" and "Makin It Easy" on Pandora radio.

Deep Raspberry cuts, still getting out there to the public!

Pretty cool.

Anyway, gotta head over to Cartoon World, looks like there may be a rumble fixin to take place.

PS: I forgot to add the irony of hearing "GATW" at a shopping mall over the weekend: earlier that same day, I had discovered and re-read a story specifically about that song in a 2006 issue of Blender. In it, Eric Carmen talked about how he saw the Stones muzzled on the Ed Sullivan Show when doing "Let's Spend the Night Together" in 1967 ("Let's spend some time together," as they sang it that night, just to keep the networks happy).

Eric's quote in Blender: "I knew then that I wanted to write a song with an explicitly sexual lyric that the kids would instantly get but the powers that be couldn't pin me down for."

Anyway, it all fit together — Eric's quote earlier in the day, a walk around a mall later, and the surprise appearance of a song written specifically with teenage girls in mind.... Like John said in another thread: Ah, youth!

GREAT THREAD!

So...

I was out to dinner last month with my former boss and "Hungry Eyes" came on right as dinner was being served. I said to him..."Keith, do you know who this is?" He said, "Yes, Eric Carmen, pass the calamari." lol

Then in RI on Oct 16th, 2010 in a mall to be precise, I heard "Hungry Eyes."

Then I was in the post office while mailing a letter @May 2009, "Hungry Eyes" came on.

Ok...then in the months leading up to the last reunion show...every time I turned around I heard "Hungry Eyes" on the car radio.

Geesh, what is it with that song? :D

The coolest thing was, I was on my way to pick up Bernie to go have dinner (with my sister) while he was working in LA Nov. 2008...and GATW came on just as I turned on the car radio. So cool!

Huh? Oh my...that song's about sex? No! Tell me it isn't true.

Eric write a explicitly sexual lyric? Come on...I may be blonde, but naïve...never. ;)

Not recent, but this was the best strange "sighting" I ever had.

Back in 2000, I did a milk mustache ad with Britney Spears. This was when "Oops I Did It Again" was at the top of the charts and before she went all crazy and stuff :) Anyway, as a perk of my job, I got to take my youngest daughter and one of her friends to a concert to meet Britney.

So, after the Meet and Greet, we're sitting in our seats waiting for the show to being. As usual, they're playing music through the sound system to get everybody all pumped to see Britney live, when all of a sudden, I hear a familiar countdown: "One, two, three, FOUR!"

Like seeing an old friend in a place that's out of context and not initially sure who they are, I remember letting it sink in for second or two before thinking, "Holy $4!@, they're playing 'Tonight!'" In-CRED-i-ble!

Not sure Britney had any clue that they were playing one of the greatest rock songs by one of the most influential bands ever, but whoever made up that pre-concert set of songs surely did. And this mostly young crowd of 25-30,000 kids were hearing Raspberries!

Now, if that's not the strangest Raspberries "sighting," I don't know what is.

Hey! BBC Radio 2 played "Overnight Sensation" yesterday on the Ken Bruce show. A rare occurence indeed for the BBC.

A couple of months back I was buying a new car and was sitting in the dealership who had the radio playing in the background when what comes on but "Go All the Way"!

Raspberries strike when you're least expecting them!

Great story, Bernie. And I love that moment where it's trying to "sink in."

And if you're like me, you had to tell your daughters. (I did at the mall: "Girls, listen! It's the Raspberries!" Normally, they'd at least pretend to be excited — after all, they met Eric and had some pictures taken with him. But they were with one of their little girlfriends, so they had to do the rolling-eyeballs thing. I could just hear what was going on inside their heads: "Dad, we're looking at clothes at Aeropostale. Try to be cool.")

Also, great photograph of a hot young Britney. You must have been King of the Universe in your daughter's eyes that day — not that you aren't every day, but... a Britney Spears concert! I just know how my daughters would feel if I ever got 'em to a Miley Cyrus concert — euphoric.

Kind of like when my niece, Katharyn mentioned she heard Go All The Way with her friends while they were purchasing their books for college, in the college books store. She knew it because of me (of course) and told her friends who the band was and that I met them (ok, really only 2 of them).

Don't know if it was on a CD or the radio, but I was proud that my niece knew who it was...and commented on it to her friends.

This may be the winner...at 5:20 this afternoon a CLEVELAND radio station, v107.3, actually played the "Live On Sunset Strip" version of "Overnight Sensation". As strange as it was to hear the hometown band being played in their hometown - sad, but true this IS a very strange occurence - the DJ, Rocco (who is also either the music director or the program director), announced it as being by Eric Carmen, not Raspberries. Cleveland strikes again. Feel free to go to v1073's facebook page and give the hometown radio station a lesson in rock history on one of their own.

Belle - Perhaps we could ask Eric to snip a bit of his chest hair. That way he is not walking around bald and there would be nothing creepy about it. Also, I have way too much free time on my hands to be able to think of an option to your suggestion...

missm,

Funny, suddenly the words "reach out and touch someone" just came to mind.
