marathon mama I enjoyed his posts on the "Brett Favre" thread. They were impressive and informative!!

For Craig...by Cat Stevens.."Oh Very Young"

Oh very young

What will you leave us this time

You're only dancing on this earth

For a short while

And though your dreams may toss

And turn you now.

They will vanish away -

Like your Daddy's best jeans

Denim blue fading up to the sky

And though you want him to last.

Forever you know he never will

(You know he never will)

And the patches

Make the goodbye harder still.

PS: I didn't get to know Craig too well, unfortunately, but he was on the "good" side of the Brett Favre discussions with me, and was very intelligent about music and a lot of other things. I always enjoyed his posts.

And something he wrote in that wild Religion thread about keeping the faith stuck in my mind, so I looked it up:

"One of the last things said by Jesus that is recorded was: "Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed" (referring to His resurrection). I believe that is so important knowing that from that moment on, man would have to believe in things that defy logic or unexplained by science sight unseen. By faith."

I like that he had faith. I think it's important to keep the faith, whatever your faith may be, but... it's so hard to do sometimes.

People please don't continue this. I spoke with Polly Novak-Balzer on Facebook and she said her beloved was NOT Craig Benfer.

HERE IS THE CONFIRMATION...

Hi Polly - I am very sorry to hear of Craig's passing but have to ask you if he was a member of the EC.com message board? Right now it is spreading like wildfire that our board member, Craig Benfer, passed away. Please let me know so that I can clear up any misunderstanding...God Bless and comfort you, Miriam

No he was not

MESSAGE FOR CRAIG BENFER...

When you log in and read threads that speak of your passing, don't get upset. Just sit back and enjoy the nice things people are saying about you. In this case, reports of your death are wildly exaggerated...

Soooo, to kind of straighten out the confusion, Craig Balzer of American Noise passed away. Steve mistakenly posts that it's Craig Benfer, who is alive and well. Or, was it, American Noise is Craig Benfer's favorite band. At any rate, OUR Craig is fine. Condolences to Mr. Balzer's family.

Well, Kirk, it's one more lesson in how easily misinformation can take us in, how easily gossip can become "fact." Like the Beatles said, I should have known better.

Well... whew! Welcome back, Craig. Keep the faith!

I've merely confirmed that Craig Balzar passed away. I'm still waiting for email confirmation from our Craig Benfer that he is indeed still with us...

Larry, funny that you should mention The Beatles...in light of there once having been reports of Macca's demise...

Really, this thread is unfortunate, isn't it? The eerie thing for me is, a guy I got to know pretty well from my job the past few years died in October. He had cancer. He was a high-profile antique jewelry seller, and I had a great lunch with him in August, when he agreed to write a cover story for the publication I edit. He delivered the story a month later, and after it came out of production, I sent him an author proof in early October. He sent back a nice note saying it looked great. Exactly one week later, he passed away. He had been battling an aggressive cancer for at least a year and knew he didn't have long to live, but he told only family members about it. Not having even an inkling that he was ill, I was totally blindsided (and still am) by the news. And I'll always be extremely honored that he took the time — in his last few weeks — to keep a promise he made to me. R.I.P., Barry.

So it's not out of the question that something tragic like this can happen. That's why it's always so important to fact-check. Like my J-school prof used to DRILL into our heads: get it right before you write it.

And like Kirk said, deepest sympathies to Craig Balzer's family. And let's not forget: to all those who are have battled or are battling cancer, I'd like to extend positive thoughts and prayers and encouragement.

Best,

Larry
