Well today is Shaun Cassidy's 50th birthday! :)

I guess that makes Shaun and Parker Stevenson the "HARDLY" Boys". :D

Anyhoo...To celebrate this occassion I found this REALLY cool video of Shaun doin' his hit version of "Hey Deanie" on an episode of "The Hardy Boys".

ALSO in this episode Joe Hardy gets credit fror writin' this cool song.

Eric...I'm a Jewish guy....4!! of my closest friends are lawyers if you wanna sue Joe Hardy for claiming authorship of this great tune....We can talk.

I know Eric recorded "That's Rock 'n' Roll" 2 years before Shaun did, but who recorded "Hey Deanie" first?  Shaun's version was released almost a year before Eric's.  And if Shaun's was first, which one would technically be considered the 'cover'??  If someone else beats a singer-songwriter to the recording studio, is the writer then considered to be covering himself?  Or is he (or she) actually considered to be covering the artist who first recorded and/or released the song, regardless of his (or her) own self-authorship of it?  These questions have perplexed me for quite some time.

Just going by the musicians playing on "Hey Deannie", I'd say that the song was recorded during the "Boats" sessions a couple of years earlier.

Here's the story:

Shaun recorded "That's Rock 'n Roll" and released it before I had a chance to. It cracked the top ten and went gold ( That was when "gold" still meant 1,000,000 units ). I had written and recorded "Hey Deanie" and I knew it didn't fit on the "Boats" album, so I called Shaun up one evening and told him I had another hit for him. He came to my house that evening and I handed him a cassette of "Hey Deanie". He went into the studio and recorded it, scored another top ten record, and  went on to sell over a million singles, and went gold . I think his album went on to sell about 3 million copies, so along with his two, million selling singles, there were about 5,000,000 good reasons to give the song to Shaun. I included it on "Change Of Heart", but I doubt that it would have been a single for me, at that time. Shaun was cute, had a hot TV show, and the little girls loved him. It was a no-brainer.

Thanks, Shaun!

I always thought "Hey Deanie" was a brilliant pop song.  The vocal hooks & stuff are pop genius.

Even though Shawn Cassidy sold a bunch records, the song should have been even bigger.  Maybe it could have been (or still can be) a movie track, or something.  Though I love Eric Carmen's version, I'm not sure the optimal version has been recorded yet.  I could see a group like the Beach Boys really nailing it.

Anyway...

:)

Eric:

If that is the case, how do you explain you charting with it in Denmark in May, 1976 reaching #7.  That date puts it in between NGFILA and Sunrise.  Was the US omission intentional, or a glitch by Arista?
