Eric Carmen
I probably just "popped the mic" on the word "why."ec
Tony Cartmill
Nobody's mentioned the verses in "Runaway"Can't get much better than that.Eric must have been on some writing performance enhancment supplements in the 70's....besides large Cokes from McDonalds?... James
Yeah Tony, that one had great lyrics. And how about "I Think I Found Myself"? Nobody ever talks about this song, but it might have the best lyrics of the whole catalog, IMHO. It's a very moving song..
Ecstasy
That's one of my favorites, too, James. A powerful motivational piece to get you focused. Very much my type of thinking.

Anna R
You know, just about every song on Boats should be listed here. That album is a masterpiece. The songwriting is, in my opinion, Eric's best- EVER!
raspberrywine
Thats easy: "I've been up too high, I've been down too low. I've been searching for something with nowhere to go. Thought I'd make it alone, but Im so far from home. In a town full of Desperate Fools." and then of course there's... "I wanna woo you all night on the beach, 'cause we got all Summer to learn how to love. On the beach. "

susana
Oh, my - am I about to agree with Cartmill? Yes, the lyrics were quite stellar at that time. See exactly what you mean about "popping the mic", E. Makes perfect sense. However (notice I didn't say "but" ), for those of us who tend to overthink every little thing, something like that can send us off to the races. More often than not, we find ourselves harkening back to what "was" or "could have been" when on the verge of something new with someone new...well, I'm sure everyone gets the picture. Margaret
Sorry I'm a little late, but I've always really loved the following: Long ago an innocence Lived deep within my soul In a yesterday where love And dreams remain But disillusion clouds my eyes And the winter takes it's toll For the spring has gone And will not come again What an unbelievably powerful lyric! Tony Cartmill
And then the prior verse, almost as perfect: Trades were made for promises Of a timeless memory And I knew, but still Refused to comprehend The fantasy, more glamorous Than she could ever be Was the course of least resistance In the end. Lew Bundles
Keep Cartmill away from the Charmin...Straighten up son...Your getting soft...I always considered you a backbone of this community and an ally in the never ending battle of "chickdom" on this board...Looks like its down to me, Tunes and James...Bob Allen has been ousted due to his stupid stance on Bea...Any guy who goes out with a girl taller than him is just an inner drive to be "cut down to size" by them...P.S..."It seems that when I need you most, I find myself alone, and I know thats not the way love's supposed to be"...*We would like to thank Eric for letting usofficially change the title of this song to" I'm Through With Cartmill"... Lew Bundles
Private message To Cartmill... Tony, I'm sorry for coming down so hard on you...But, I thought you got the whole idea of this message board thing...Who cares about Eric Carmrn music...We're here to get chicks...James understands it and I thought you got it too...Believe me, its starting to work...I was at the Highline Show and I was standing at the bar when one HOT lady comes over to me and says, "hey, a-hole...Could you move so I can get a drink"...She must have recognized me from the board...Only 1500 posts and its starting to work...So come back to us...Studs are a dying breed...Love Lew
James
Lew, Tony's cool. He's just working within himself, within his abilities. If you or I want a chick, we snap our fingers, and it's a done deal {though there is a difference in degree here between James (Major Leagues) and Lew (Minor League, Single A). But anyway, for Tony, to get chicks he needs to pretend to be deep and sensitive (chicks fall for this every time). It's his only chance. We shouldn't fault him for this. Trindy
Chick-hunters or not...I'm gonna break into the Eric love-fest for a second (in part because so many of you have already mentioned lyrics that are my favorites) and give kudos to a classic Wally line: "I know that you shouldn't be sharing All of those nights with your mother Staring at you, staring at her Thinking of places you wish you were" There's not a teenage girl in the world who hasn't lived those lyrics. Pure genius.
Trindy
And you know, come to think of it...it's genius in part because there's a little bit of Lorenz Hart in it...because part of the rhyme comes in at an odd place, but it works. Like he'd write "We'll take Manhattan/The Bronx and Staten/Island too..." The lyrics above, from the rhyme standpoint, really break at: "I know that you shouldn't be sharing All of those nights with your mother staring At you, staring at her Thinking of places you wish you were" It's not a natural phrase break, but Wally makes it work, the same way Lorenz Hart did. That's songwriting. And it's songwriting because Wally gets in the head of the girl to whom he is addressing the song and speaks to what she is experiencing, in order to win her heart. She's not sold on him, but he thinks she will be if he can just get her out of the house and away from Mama's watchful eye. Smart guy, that Wally. As for Eric's lyrics, I'll probably be fondest from now on of the one about "floating 'round like an old newspaper/Blowin' down some windy street," not only because it describes so perfectly the feeling that one has been discarded and no longer belongs to anything and is just blowing away, but because I now know that it was inspired by the sight of just such a newspaper blowing down the street in front of THE PLACE WHERE I LIVE RIGHT NOW.

darlene
Hey, how about that! Those guys really can write songs! That's why we love them so much and want them to write again. Some people see themselves as better than others see them. Others don't see their talents as clearly as others can. I think both Eric and Wally are way too modest when it comes to perceiving the genius of their musical gifts. They hold themselves way up to much higher standards than they set for anyone else. Both are truly gifted songwriters as well as musicians whose talent attracted each other like magnets, and still does. Consummate composers AND lyricists! I'd love to see what they'd write about together NOW! --Darlene

Crg2
"Used to be so F&*kin' Optimistic"-sort of an iconic Raspberries lyric, gets quoted a lot by those in the know."I can remember/midsummer skies/love in your eyes"-Totally evokes a thousand memories of being a kid in the 1970's, my cousin's "Tiger Beat" posters in her room, and the older girls in my neighborhood playing their Raspberries records out of their open bedroom windows.
