American Idol

I usually like Simon's biting commentary --- entertaining. But he described "ABM" as "...THE ultimate diva song" (or something to that effect). That just doesn't seem right. It's a song that divas can sing, but... it's really the ultimate rock ballad, I would say.... Maybe Simon should go to the next 'berries concert?

And yeah, Asia'h (sp?) sure butchered the opening verse, didn't she? "When I was young, I never mumble mumble alone..." Anybody catch what she was singing?

Maybe she was trying to work in "type a text message" instead of "dial the telephone"?

Aside from the odd lyric, I think she did a 'decent' job on trying out new phrasings and melody lines. I don't know how much her week long sickness contibuted to her being slightly off with her intonation (ie. "pitchy") but I actually liked what she did with it.

And I agree - it's a classic Eric Carmen song...always and forever. Same goes for 'Without You' from Badfinger - it's not a Mariah song.

Simon claims to be so smart about music. He admitted that he had never heard of 'Magic Man'. Simon - please keep those stupid 'diva' comments to yourself, and give some credit where it's due!!

I like Celine Dion's version... she happened to make it famous in another decade for another generation of fans... but we all know who wrote it... ABM IS the Ultimate Diva song but it is also the Ultimate pop song Sung By EC. It must make Eric proud to see his song performed on a current show. When they start doing 1980's which Eric Song will they do... Almost Paradise, Hungry Eyes?

I got on here just to comment on this. I was able to make out what Asia was saying, but it didn't make much sense, so I don't remember what it was! Also, I thought the same thing you did Robin, about the songs being from the 70's and Dion's version being from the 90's! It made no sense!

Also, I brought up the subject of Eric being on the show last year. I think it would be fantastic!

ABM Eric vs Divas. 2 different songs Eric's original has depth, emotion, pain, etc.. Divas are like posers at the gym, far more interested in showing off their vocal chops then singing the story.. if that was all that mattered why aren't people buying more opera? Eric takes you to that 4th gin and tonic alone on a friday night reminiscing and makes you feel like you're there.. the divas just want to brag about their 4 octave range and could care less about the composers story.. Erics voice is THE story

Either way... ka-ching.. way to go Eric, not many composers can say they wrote a standard

Yes, Celine Dion's name was mentioned after one of the female singers sang ABM. It was a 70's theme so I was sure that they would give Eric credit for writing and singing the song. Randy did mention Celine's name when he commented on the performance. Eric's name never came up. It's not right!

I actually think everyone is making a bigger deal out of this than it is. Eric wrote the song. He gets paid when somebody sings it. That's kind of the singer/songwriter agreement in a nutshell. Fact is, female singers sing "All By Myself" because Celine Dion had a big hit with it and David Foster's soaring arrangement make it a song to show off with if you have the goods. I don't have any problem with them referring to Celine's version when a female contestant sings it. That's the version they're singing. It is exactly the same thing as when somebody sings something like "Jailhouse Rock," for instance. I don't think a single person wouldn't think Elvis Presley. Those in the know, of course, would remember Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were the composers. But on a show like "American Idol," they would never mention the song-writing team.

I agree with you Bernie. I think it's great that Asia'h had the good taste to choose "All By Myself" to sing. AI obviously recognized it as an '70's hit, or it would not have even been on the list of songs for her to choose from.

Eric has written a song that will prove to be timeless for every generation. I wouldn't be surprised if it shows up at the top of the charts every 20 years or so, and each new generation is going to associate it with the new artist. Eric's name will still be on the label as the person who wrote it.

The difference is that Eric not only composed it but made a #2 hit of it. The whole reason it was available for 70's night was because Eric had a big hit with it in the 70's. I have nothing against Celine's version of the song, and am happy that it introduced the song to a new generation, but how about giving the original artist some credit. I wonder how many people watching were scratching their heads, confused as to why a Celine Dion song was being sung on 70's night.

I see your point, Bernie...the only thing that truly *puzzles* me, is it was actually "70's" night on AI...Celine didn't record the song in the 70's...lol! Oh well. It was still awesome to hear it getting airplay on the show, that much I'll say! :)

Does anyone have the scoop on when Simon & co will have the songs of EC and the Raspberries featured? Maybe have EC as a guest judge like other songwriters... would be great to have a mix of the group's hits and EC solo numbers on a program of Idol. If they are featured, usually the week after the show, the CDs and downloads will increase dramatically - would be good for the guys...
