austinberries
did eric write "thats rock & roll"? bernie has a really hot midnight special version of the song in the multimedia section, & the 'berries played it in cleveland, which was completely smokin' too, but its never been clear to me (i only recently discovered it) if this was one of his songs or someone else's
Raspbernie
Eric wrote it.
austinberries
thx bernie, i wasn't even sure if it was an older standard from somewhere b/c of its signature sound, progression, & melody - cool that he banked it w/ shaun cassidy's version, but it was milktoast next to his own (& the 'berries version in cleveland in december). great tune, great melody, rippin' vocals, w/ another cool bridge - eric is the slayer of all bridges... HT from Mo
It's one of my favorite EC songs!
MJ
I heard it by phone from Jay who was kind enough to call me during the show so I could hear some of the concert lol - sounded good to me!
Anna R
Oh I am soooo jealous MJ!!! I would have loved to hear that one played!I am still mad at myself for not going to the Cleveland show......
hollies65
It was the one Eric song I was hoping they'd play...and it was great. The band [Esp Wally] really toughened the song up.
Paulie Mississippi
You gotta believe that if "Eric Carmen" (Arista, not Geffen) had been the 5th Raspberries album, "That's Rock & Roll" would have been the first "Hit Record"... and of course it is sort of a follow up to "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)" in the regard that OS is from the point of view of wanting to be there and TR&R is about being there and looking back... seattlesteve
I have always been fascinated by the notion of "'berrifying" certain EC solo songs. That's Rock and Roll is a no-brainer.. I would have loved to have heard their treatment of this. This 3 chord melody has plenty of room for Wally and Jim's fills, let alone the 'dubs layered harmonies. Should be a staple at frat parties. No Hard Feelings is an intriguing choice as well. Hurts Too Much would be a flat out hit.
Raspbernie
Yeah...Wally really Stones'd up the guitar parts. As Eric told me afterward, "I needed Wally to rock like Keith Richards on that one because I was gonna be singing, "C'mon everybody get down and get with it." MJ
Then Wally would be the man for de job lol
seattlesteve
Kind of weird to think that probably half of EC's debut solo album, would have, could have, been Raspberries 5 in a different time and place.
austinberries
right! this was another perfect example of the musical magical mix that eric & wally have always had - eric writes the perfect pop/rock tunes & wally adds the hooky, muscular riffs, & lo'... thus was power pop begat. that song was really scorchin' in cleveland in december & a real treat
chris hess
i can still hear it in my head from cleveland..i'll take that with me till the day i die...really!! no s--t!! lol, chris
Eric Carmen
Pete Townshend wrote for Daltrey's voice. I wrote for Wally's guitar playing. Just that simple.ec
Eric Carmen
Unfortunately, I also had to keep in mind the limitations of a very green, rookie group of musicians, and an equally green engineer and producer. In a perfect world, we would have all met each other about three years later. Jimmy Ienner became a great producer. Shelley Yakus became a great engineer. The Raspberries became a great studio band. It just took some time. I was very impatient. My bad. I apologize to all concerned.ec
Eric Carmen
We were all just learning. There's no college for great record making. It's all on the job training.ec

chris hess
nice insight eric..no apologies needed from you at all..you did the best you could and it shows...it's all a learning process, and it never ends..and can i use "chances for mistakes" for a title for a new song??!!! that's a great title for a tune!!! lol, chris
